Orientation Dependence of a Dislocation Etch for Zinc
The dislocation etch for (101-[bar]0] surfaces of zinc reported by Brandt, Adams, and Vreeland have been further explored. Additional surface orientations have been found where dislocation etching takes place. These orientations cover an area located between 3 degrees and 12.2 degrees to the [0001], and the area is symmetric about that axis. Attempts to produce dislocation etching on within 2 degrees of (0001) were generally unsuccessful. This is in contrast to etching of many crystals which takes place only within a few degrees of a low index plane

Benchmarking and performance analysis of the CM-2
A suite of benchmarking routines testing communication, basic arithmetic operations, and selected kernel algorithms written in LISP and PARIS was developed for the CM-2. Experiment runs are automated via a software framework that sequences individual tests, allowing for unattended overnight operation. Multiple measurements are made and treated statistically to generate well-characterized results from the noisy values given by cm:time. The results obtained provide a comparison with similar, but less extensive, testing done on a CM-1. Tests were chosen to aid the algorithmist in constructing fast, efficient, and correct code on the CM-2, as well as gain insight into what performance criteria are needed when evaluating parallel processing machines
Religiosity and its Impact on Individual Support for Welfare Spending Over Time
In this paper, I will argue that individual preferences toward religion have a significant relationship with an individual’s level of support for welfare spending. Specifically, this research finds that as religiosity increases support for welfare spending decreases. This assessment is reached through Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions using the World Values Survey (WVS). Furthermore it looks to address the potential for a temporal pattern that results from these preferences. The objective of this work is to not only establish the relationship between these two individual preferences but to also illustrate the implication they may have on federal policy toward welfare spending across Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) nations. Lastly, by engaging in a case between Norway and Sweden, I hope to uncover some national level characteristics that may significantly influence individual preferences
A Stochastic Analysis of Proposals for the New US Farm Bill
Most of the large scale modeling systems used in the analysis of agricultural policies produce deterministic projections. In reality, however, the agricultural sector is subject to a high degree of uncertainty as a result of fluctuations in exogenous factors such as the weather or macroeconomic variation. A stochastic approach can provide additional information to policy makers regarding the implications of this uncertainty, through the use of stochastically generated projections. This paper also shows how deterministic analysis may result in systematic errors in the projection of some variables. Phytometric intelligence sensors
Methods and apparatus for determining when plants require watering, and methods of attending to the watering of plants including signaling the grower that the plants are in need of hydration are provided. The novel methods include real-time measurement of plant metabolics and phytometric physiology changes of intrinsic physical or behavioral traits within the plant such as determining physiological flux measurement of enzyme flux due to environmental changes such as the wind and drought stress, soil and plant mineral deficiencies, or the interaction with a bio-control for organic disease control including, cell movement, signal transduction, internal chemical processes and external environmental processes including when plants require watering, and methods of attending to the watering of plants including signaling the grower that the plants are in need of hydration

Thermo-Mechanical Exergy of a Substance in Cold Applications Approaching Absolute Zero
In this work, we consider the thermo-mechanical exergy of a substance for cold applications, even as it approaches absolute zero. This is relevant for cold-service applications such as refrigeration, liquefied natural gas, air separation, and liquid hydrogen. We demonstrate how the optimization formulation for the determination of exergy is the most suitable way for process systems engineers to think about exergy. We provide an illustrative example by computing thermo-mechanical exergy of neon approaching absolute zero. We also discuss how this result relates with the Third Law of Thermodynamics, both how it is used to compute thermo-mechanical exergy, but also what it implies about the validity of the results and the equations used to compute them.publishedVersio
