LE THÉÂTRE ET L’ÉGLISE

Au Moyen Âge, le théâtre a connu un déclin important sous l’influence de l’Église chrétienne qui contestait au début l’art théâtral. Les grands Pères de l’Église, comme Tertullien et Saint Augustin, ont eu une position ferme contre les spectacles considérés comme hérétiques. Cependant, au fil du temps, l’Église a changé d’attitude : elle a cessé d’être l’adversaire du théâtre et en est devenue son défenseur. Au XIIe siècle, des clercs importants, comme Honorius d’Autun, reconnaissaient la valeur du théâtre dans le contexte religieux. A leurs yeux, les prêtres sont des acteurs qui représentaient des scènes bibliques comme moyen de prêcher la foi. Le théâtre médiéval, mis en scène autour de l’Église, jouait un rôle différent par rapport au théâtre antique, du fait qu’il mettant l’accent sur la solennité et la rigueur doctrinale. La naissance du drame liturgique, dérivé de la liturgie, était un processus évolutif qui comprenait des dialogues bibliques dramatisés, comme le célèbre « Quem Queritis ? ». Ces dialogues étaient à l’origine en latin, mais le long du temps ils passent en langue vernaculaire pour mieux éveiller les émotions et l’intérêt des fidèles. Ce théâtre religieux évolue, ajoutant des éléments de scénographie et de costumes et contribuant ainsi à rapprocher la population de la foi chrétienne. Les grandes processions et cérémonies organisées par les monastères, comme ceux de Saint-Riquier, avaient pour but de sanctifier l’espace terrestre et de glorifier le pouvoir spirituel. Ainsi, le théâtre médiéval est devenu un moyen essentiel dans l’évangélisation et dans la consolidation de l’ordre religieux et étatique

THE DRAMATIC ADAPTATIO NS OF PICU PĂTRUȚ AND THE EUROPEAN MODEL

An adequate approach to the works of Picu Pătruț – poems, adaptations, copies, popular theatre plays, miniatures – demands a discussion of the concepts of model and original creation, and an analysis of that which various scholars have deemed to be an adaptation of certain themes to fit local specifics. Popular theatre, and more so religious popular theatre, developed in Romanian territories and across all of Europe based on certain models that, as much as one may try, cannot be made secular, since they are in fact dramatizations of biblical situations.
