    Young school dropouts: Levels of influence of different systems

    Different countries have encountered the problem of increasing young people dropping out of schools. Causes relating to family, school and peers have been suggested in many studies. However, the levels of influence from these different social systems on the phenomenon, which bear intervention implications, are seldom explored. This qualitative study has found that family, school and peers have respectively exerted distal, predisposing and immediate effects on the phenomenon of young school dropouts. Based on the findings, works in different systems are recommended so that the problem of young school dropouts can be greatly reduced. © 2003 Taylor & Francis Ltd.postprin

    Developing low‐cost photovoltaic absorbers that can harvest the short‐wave infrared (SWIR) part of the solar spectrum, which remains unharnessed by current Si‐based and perovskite photovoltaic technologies, is a prerequisite for making high‐efficiency, low‐cost tandem solar cells. Here, infrared PbS colloidal quantum dot (CQD) solar cells employing a hybrid inorganic–organic ligand exchange process that results in an external quantum efficiency of 80% at 1.35 µm are reported, leading to a short‐circuit current density of 34 mA cm−2 and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 7.9%, which is a current record for SWIR CQD solar cells. When this cell is placed at the back of an MAPbI3 perovskite film, it delivers an extra 3.3% PCE by harnessing light beyond 750 nm.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    The two-Higgs-doublet model can be constrained by imposing Higgs-family symmetries and/or generalized CP symmetries. It is known that there are only six independent classes of such symmetry-constrained models. We study the CP properties of all cases in the bilinear formalism. An exact symmetry implies CP conservation.     VI-Band Follow-Up Observations of Ultra-Long-Period Cepheid Candidates in M31

    The ultra-long period Cepheids (ULPCs) are classical Cepheids with pulsation periods exceeding 80\approx 80 days. The intrinsic brightness of ULPCs are ~1 to ~3 mag brighter than their shorter period counterparts. This makes them attractive in future distance scale work to derive distances beyond the limit set by the shorter period Cepheids. We have initiated a program to search for ULPCs in M31, using the single-band data taken from the Palomar Transient Factory, and identified eight possible candidates. In this work, we presented the VI-band follow-up observations of these eight candidates. Based on our VI-band light curves of these candidates and their locations in the color-magnitude diagram and the Period-Wesenheit diagram, we verify two candidates as being truly ULPCs. The six other candidates are most likely other kinds of long-period variables. With the two confirmed M31 ULPCs, we tested the applicability of ULPCs in distance scale work by deriving the distance modulus of M31. It was found to be μM31,ULPC=24.30±0.76\mu_{M31,ULPC}=24.30\pm0.76 mag. The large error in the derived distance modulus, together with the large intrinsic dispersion of the Period-Wesenheit (PW) relation and the small number of ULPCs in a given host galaxy, means that the question of the suitability of ULPCs as standard candles is still open. Further work is needed to enlarge the sample of calibrating ULPCs and reduce the intrinsic dispersion of the PW relation before re-considering ULPCs as suitable distance indicators.Comment: 13 pages, with 14 Figures and 4 Tables (one online table).     Admission guidelines for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Hong Kong

    Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common condition in Hong Kong and many affected patients require frequent admissions to hospital. The indications for hospitalisation for Chinese COPD patients have not been described for the Hong Kong setting. We have therefore compiled these criteria which artificially divide the admission process into acute, sub- acute, and elective. Patients should be immediately hospitalised if there is an exacerbation complicated by severe dyspnoea or respiratory failure. Sub- acute admission is indicated for stabilisation of severe COPD complications and elective admission is indicated for long term treatment rationalisation.published_or_final_versio
