A new era of wide-field submillimetre imaging: on-sky performance of SCUBA-2
SCUBA-2 is the largest submillimetre wide-field bolometric camera ever built.
This 43 square arc-minute field-of-view instrument operates at two wavelengths
(850 and 450 microns) and has been installed on the James Clerk Maxwell
Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. SCUBA-2 has been successfully commissioned and
operational for general science since October 2011. This paper presents an
overview of the on-sky performance of the instrument during and since
commissioning in mid-2011. The on-sky noise characteristics and NEPs of the 450
and 850 micron arrays, with average yields of approximately 3400 bolometers at
each wavelength, will be shown. The observing modes of the instrument and the
on-sky calibration techniques are described. The culmination of these efforts
has resulted in a scientifically powerful mapping camera with sensitivities
that allow a square degree of sky to be mapped to 10 mJy/beam rms at 850 micron
in 2 hours and 60 mJy/beam rms at 450 micron in 5 hours in the best weather.Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures.SPIE Conference series 8452, Millimetre,

Content Validation of Statements Describing the Essential Work of Australian Special Education Teachers
This article describes the procedures used in developing and validating a set of statements for Australian special education teachers. Using the existing AITSL Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the proficient level as a basis, a set of statements describing the specific skills and knowledge required by Australian educators working in special education and inclusive settings was prepared. Two groups of subject matter experts reviewed, revised and rated the relevance of the complete set of 49 statements. According to the experts’ ratings the content validity of each statement and the corresponding standard met Polit et al.’s (2007) criteria for excellence
Development of an electronic health message system to support recovery after stroke: Inspiring Virtual Enabled Resources following Vascular Events (iVERVE)
Purpose: Worldwide, stroke is a leading cause of disease burden. Many survivors have unmet needs after discharge from hospital. Electronic communication technology to support post-discharge care has not been used for patients with stroke. In this paper, we describe the development of a novel electronic messaging system designed for survivors of stroke to support their goals of recovery and secondary prevention after hospital discharge.
Participants and methods: This was a formative evaluation study. The design was informed by a literature search, existing data from survivors of stroke, and behavior change theories. We established two working groups; one for developing the electronic infrastructure and the other (comprising researchers, clinical experts and consumer representatives) for establishing the patient-centered program. Following agreement on the categories for the goal-setting menu, we drafted relevant messages to support and educate patients. These messages were then independently reviewed by multiple topic experts. Concurrently, we established an online database to capture participant characteristics and then integrated this database with a purpose-built messaging system. We conducted alpha testing of the approach using the first 60 messages.
Results: The initial goal-setting menu comprised 26 subcategories. Following expert review, another 8 goal subcategories were added to the secondary prevention category: managing cholesterol; smoking; physical activity; alcohol consumption; weight management; medication management; access to health professionals, and self-care. Initially, 455 health messages were created by members of working group 2. Following refinement and mapping to different goals by the project team, 980 health messages across the health goals and 69 general motivational messages were formulated. Seventeen independent reviewers assessed the messages and suggested adding 73 messages and removing 16 (2%). Overall, 1,233 messages (18 administrative, 69 general motivation and 1,146 health-related) were created.
Conclusion: This novel electronic self-management support system is ready to be pilot tested in a randomized controlled trial in patients with stroke
Objectively Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Time Are Associated With Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Adults With Prediabetes: The PREVIEW Study
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to examine the association among physical activity (PA), sedentary time (ST), and cardiometabolic risk in adults with prediabetes.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Participants (n = 2,326; 25–70 years old, 67% female) from eight countries, with a BMI >25 kg ⋅ m−2 and impaired fasting glucose (5.6–6.9 mmol ⋅ L−1) or impaired glucose tolerance (7.8–11.0 mmol ⋅ L−1 at 2 h), participated. Seven-day accelerometry objectively assessed PA levels and ST.RESULTS Multiple linear regression revealed that moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) was negatively associated with HOMA of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (standardized β = −0.078 [95% CI −0.128, −0.027]), waist circumference (WC) (β = −0.177 [−0.122, −0.134]), fasting insulin (β = −0.115 [−0.158, −0.072]), 2-h glucose (β = −0.069 [−0.112, −0.025]), triglycerides (β = −0.091 [−0.138, −0.044]), and CRP (β = −0.086 [−0.127, −0.045]). ST was positively associated with HOMA-IR (β = 0.175 [0.114, 0.236]), WC (β = 0.215 [0.026, 0.131]), fasting insulin (β = 0.155 [0.092, 0.219]), triglycerides (β = 0.106 [0.052, 0.16]), CRP (β = 0.106 [0.39, 0.172]), systolic blood pressure (BP) (β = 0.078 [0.026, 0.131]), and diastolic BP (β = 0.106 [0.39, −0.172]). Associations reported between total PA (counts ⋅ min−1) and all risk factors were comparable or stronger than for MVPA: HOMA-IR (β = −0.151 [−0.194, −0.107]), WC (β = −0.179 [−0.224, −0.134]), fasting insulin (β = −0.139 [−0.183, −0.096]), 2-h glucose (β = −0.088 [−0.131, −0.045]), triglycerides (β = −0.117 [−0.162, −0.071]), and CRP (β = −0.104 [−0.146, −0.062]).CONCLUSIONS In adults with prediabetes, objectively measured PA and ST were associated with cardiometabolic risk markers. Total PA was at least as strongly associated with cardiometabolic risk markers as MVPA, which may imply that the accumulation of total PA over the day is as important as achieving the intensity of MVPA

Suppression of the in vitro growth and development of Microdochium nivale by phosphite
© 2018 British Society for Plant Pathology The ascomycete fungus Microdochium nivale is a major pathogen of many species of the gramineae. Control measures rely heavily on chemical fungicides, making alternative means of disease reduction desirable. Phosphite (PO33−), has proven efficacy in reducing susceptibility of different species of gramineae to oomycetes, and has adverse effects on the invitro growth of numerous other pathogens. The effect of phosphorous acid (H3PO3), phosphoric acid (H3PO4), dihydrogen potassium phosphite (KH2PO3), dihydrogen potassium phosphate (KH2PO4) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) on the invitro mycelial growth and development of M. nivale was determined. Radial growth on amended potato dextrose agar (PDA) was used to calculate mean daily growth and percentage inhibition. PO33− had a significant inhibitory effect on mycelial growth, with EC50 values ranging between 35.9 and 40.99μgmL−1, whilst PO43− and KOH had no significant inhibitory effect. Microscopic examination of mycelia showed morphological deformities in hyphae growing on PO33− amended PDA, whilst hyphal growth was normal on PO43− and KOH amended PDA. Conidial germination of M. nivale was significantly reduced following immersion in solutions of 50, 100 and 250μgmL−1 of PO33−, while PO43− and KOH at the same concentrations induced no inhibitory affect. These results show that PO33− is a significant inhibitor of the growth of M. nivale and may have the potential to be used as a chemical control agent in the field
Effect of cadence on locomotor–respiratory coupling during upper-body exercise
Introduction: Asynchronous arm-cranking performed at high cadences elicits greater cardiorespiratory responses compared to low cadences. This has been attributed to increased postural demand and locomotor–respiratory coupling (LRC), and yet, this has not been empirically tested. This study aimed to assess the effects of cadence on cardiorespiratory responses and LRC during upper-body exercise. Methods: Eight recreationally-active men performed arm-cranking exercise at moderate and severe intensities that were separated by 10 min of rest. At each intensity, participants exercised for 4 min at each of three cadences (50, 70, and 90 rev min−1) in a random order, with 4 min rest-periods applied in-between cadences. Exercise measures included LRC via whole- and half-integer ratios, cardiorespiratory function, perceptions of effort (RPE and dyspnoea), and diaphragm EMG using an oesophageal catheter. Results: The prevalence of LRC during moderate exercise was highest at 70 vs. 50 rev min−1 (27 ± 10 vs. 13 ± 9%, p = 0.000) and during severe exercise at 90 vs. 50 rev min−1 (24 ± 7 vs. 18 ± 5%, p = 0.034), with a shorter inspiratory time and higher mean inspiratory flow (p < 0.05) at higher cadences. During moderate exercise, (Formula presented.) and fC were higher at 90 rev min−1 (p < 0.05) relative to 70 and 50 rev min−1 ((Formula presented.) 1.19 ± 0.25 vs. 1.05 ± 0.21 vs. 0.97 ± 0.24 L min−1; fC 116 ± 11 vs. 101 ± 13 vs. 101 ± 12 b min−1), with concomitantly elevated dyspnoea. There were no discernible cadence-mediated effects on diaphragm EMG. Conclusion: Participants engage in LRC to a greater extent at moderate-high cadences which, in turn, increase respiratory airflow. Cadence rate should be carefully considered when designing aerobic training programmes involving the upper-limbs

Parental experiences of supporting children with clinically significant post-traumatic distress: a qualitative study of families accessing psychological services
The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of parents in providing support to their child following trauma exposure in cases where children are experiencing clinically significant levels of post-traumatic distress. Qualitative interviews were conducted with parents whose child was exposed to a trauma and referred for psychological treatment. Parents reported considerable anxiety in coping with their child’s post-traumatic distress. Avoidance of trauma-related discussions was encouraged due to concerns that non-avoidant approaches may worsen children’s post-trauma difficulties. Nonetheless, parents were often sensitive to their child’s distress and offered reassurance and other forms of support. Many barriers existed to accessing psychological treatment, and perceptions of inadequate guidance from therapists on supporting child adjustment contributed to parental distress. The results illustrate the strategies used by parents in supporting their child post-trauma and may assist mental health professionals in providing acceptable guidance to parents following child trauma
Pacific-wide pH snapshots reveal that high coral cover correlates with low, but variable pH

Bulletin of Marine Science, 97(1), (2021): 239-256, https://doi.org/10.5343/bms.2019.0100.Ocean acidification (OA) is impairing the construction of coral reefs while simultaneously accelerating their breakdown. The metabolism of different reef organism assemblages alters seawater pH in different ways, possibly buffering or exacerbating OA impacts. In spite of this, field data relating benthic community structure and seawater pH are sparse. We collected pH time-series data snapshots at 10 m depth from 28 different reefs (n = 13 lagoon, n = 15 fore reef) across 22 Pacific islands, spanning 31° latitude and 90° longitude. Coincident with all deployments, we measured percent cover of the benthic community. On fore reefs, high coral cover (CC) negatively correlated with mean and minimum pH, but positively correlated with pH variability. Conversely, pH minima were positively correlated to coverage of coralline and turf algae. Benthic cover did not correlate with pH in lagoonal reefs. From 0% to 100% CC, mean pH and aragonite saturation state (Ωarag) declined −0.081 and −0.51, respectively, while declines in minimum values were greater (Δmin pH = −0.164, Δmin Ωarag = −0.96). Based upon previously published relationships, the mean pH decline from 0% to 100% CC would depress coral calcification 7.7%–18.0% and increase biologically-mediated dissolution 13.5%–27.9%, with pH minima depressing dark coral calcification 14.4%–35.2% and increasing biologically-mediated dissolution 31.0%–62.2%. This spatially expansive dataset provides evidence that coral reefs with the highest coral cover may experience the lowest and most extreme pH values with OA.We thank the Khaled bin Sultan Living Ocean’s Foundation and the crew of the M/Y Golden Shadow.
