Role of Layering Oscillations at Liquid Metal Surfaces in Bulk Recrystallization and Surface Melting
The contrasting melting behavior of different surface orientations in metals
can be explained in terms of a repulsive or attractive effective interaction
between the solid-liquid and the liquid-vapor interface. We show how a crucial
part of this interaction originates from the layering effects near the liquid
metal surface. Its sign depends on the relative tuning of layering oscillations
to the crystal interplanar spacing, thus explaining the orientational
dependence. Molecular dynamics recrystallization simulations of Au surfaces
provide direct and quantitative evidence of this phenomenon.Comment: 10 pages (RevTeX) plus 3 figures (PostScript
Synthesis of block copolymers of PS-b-PMMA employing control radical polymerization
The ARCADE Raman Lidar System for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation of ground-based
very high energy gamma-ray instruments; the facility will be organized in two
arrays, one for each hemisphere. The atmospheric calibration of the CTA
telescopes is a critical task. The atmosphere affects the measured Cherenkov
yield in several ways: the air-shower development itself, the variation of the
Cherenkov angle with altitude, the loss of photons due to scattering and
absorption of Cherenkov light out of the camera field-of-view and the
scattering of photons into the camera. In this scenario, aerosols are the most
variable atmospheric component in time and space and therefore need a
continuous monitoring. Lidars are among the most used instruments in
atmospheric physics to measure the aerosol attenuation profiles of light. The
ARCADE Lidar system is a very compact and portable Raman Lidar system that has
been built within the FIRB 2010 grant and is currently taking data in Lamar,
Colorado. The ARCADE Lidar is proposed to operate at the CTA sites with the
goal of making a first survey of the aerosol conditions of the selected site
and to use it as a calibrated benchmark for the other Lidars that will be
installed on site. It is proposed for CTA that the ARCADE Lidar will be first
upgraded in Italy and then tested in parallel to a Lidar of the EARLINET
network in L'Aquila. Upgrades include the addition of the water vapour Raman
channel to the receiver and the use of new and better performing electronics.
It is proposed that the upgraded system will travel to and characterize both
CTA sites, starting from the first selected site in 2016
Surface structure in simple liquid metals. An orbital free first principles study
Molecular dynamics simulations of the liquid-vapour interfaces in simple
sp-bonded liquid metals have been performed using first principles methods.
Results are presented for liquid Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ba, Al, Tl, and Si at
thermodynamic conditions near their respective triple points, for samples of
2000 particles in a slab geometry. The longitudinal ionic density profiles
exhibit a pronounced stratification extending several atomic diameters into the
bulk, which is a feature already experimentally observed in liquid K, Ga, In,
Sn and Hg. The wavelength of the ionic oscillations shows a good scaling with
the radii of the associated Wigner-Seitz spheres. The structural rearrangements
at the interface are analyzed in terms of the transverse pair correlation
function, the coordination number and the bond-angle distribution between
nearest neighbors. The valence electronic density profile also shows (weaker)
oscillations whose phase, with respect to those of the ionic profile, changes
from opposite phase in the alkalis to almost in-phase for Si.Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures, 5 tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Large scale quantum simulations: C_60 impacts on a semiconducting surface
We present tight binding molecular dynamics simulations of C_60 collisions on
the reconstructed diamond(111) surface, carried out with an O(N) method and
with cells containing 1140 atoms. The results of our simulations are in very
good agreement with experiments performed under the same impact conditions.
Furthermore our calculations provide a detailed characterization of the
microscopic processes occuring during the collision, and allow the
identification of three impact regimes, as a function of the fullerene incident
energy. Finally, the study of the reactivity between the cluster and the
surface gives insight into the deposition mechanisms of C_60 on semiconducting
substrates
Surface layering of liquids: The role of surface tension
Recent measurements show that the free surfaces of liquid metals and alloys
are always layered, regardless of composition and surface tension; a result
supported by three decades of simulations and theory. Recent theoretical work
claims, however, that at low enough temperatures the free surfaces of all
liquids should become layered, unless preempted by bulk freezing. Using x-ray
reflectivity and diffuse scattering measurements we show that there is no
observable surface-induced layering in water at T=298 K, thus highlighting a
fundamental difference between dielectric and metallic liquids. The
implications of this result for the question in the title are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. B. 69 (2004
Microscopic mechanism for mechanical polishing of diamond (110) surfaces
Mechanically induced degradation of diamond, as occurs during polishing, is
studied using total--energy pseudopotential calculations. The strong asymmetry
in the rate of polishing between different directions on the diamond (110)
surface is explained in terms of an atomistic mechanism for nano--groove
formation. The post--polishing surface morphology and the nature of the
polishing residue predicted by this mechanism are consistent with experimental
evidence.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
The Air Microwave Yield (AMY) experiment - A laboratory measurement of the microwave emission from extensive air showers
The AMY experiment aims to measure the microwave bremsstrahlung radiation
(MBR) emitted by air-showers secondary electrons accelerating in collisions
with neutral molecules of the atmosphere. The measurements are performed using
a beam of 510 MeV electrons at the Beam Test Facility (BTF) of Frascati INFN
National Laboratories. The goal of the AMY experiment is to measure in
laboratory conditions the yield and the spectrum of the GHz emission in the
frequency range between 1 and 20 GHz. The final purpose is to characterise the
process to be used in a next generation detectors of ultra-high energy cosmic
rays. A description of the experimental setup and the first results are
presented.Comment: 3 pages -- EPS-HEP'13 European Physical Society Conference on High

Why Airbnb is impacting housing affordability and how urban planners could respond to it
The thesis starts with an overview of what sharing economy means and which consequences can have on a urban level. The main focus is the home-sharing platform Airbnb, which is on the contemporary debate across the main cities where it operates for the impact that is having on the citizen's daily routin, touristification of cities and the rise of rental prices. My attempt was to go deeper in the Airbnb's situation in Milan, however the lack of data made me base mostly on previous experiences in other cities and raised the question about the need of addressing those issues by the local administration
