Cataloged from PDF version of article.Germ line BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 mutations were screened in 50 Turkish breast and/or ovarian cancer patients composed of hereditary, familial, early onset and male cancer groups. Genomic DNA samples were tested by heteroduplex analysis and DNA sequencing. Two truncating BRCA2 mutations, one novel (6880 insG) and one previously reported (3034 delAAAC), were found in two out of six (33%) hereditary breast and/or ovarian cancer patients. A novel truncating (1200 insA) and a missense (2080A→G) BRCA1 mutation was found in two of 27 (7%) individuals in the early onset group. A total of four (8%) disease-causing mutations in 50 breast cancer patients were identified in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. In addition, five BRCA1 sequence variants have been identified in 23 patients. These results indicate that BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are involved in some, but not all, forms of hereditary predisposition to breast cancer in the Turkish population. Copyright (C) 2000

A novel symmetric 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid derivative (PDI1) dye based on thiophene donor group was synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR. Cyclic Voltammetry analysis is performed to determine the energy levels of the perylene derivative. Optical characteristics were determined by visible absorption and fluorescence emission spectra. Spectral behavior and fluorescence quantum yield of PDI1 have been measured in different solvents. The dye exhibits high fluorescence quantum yield ( Φf: 0.94-0.99). But the quantum yield PDI1 is very low in the n-butanol solution ( Φf: 0.12). The photophysical properties have important implications for use in a variety of electroactive and photovoltaic applications. A photovoltaic device was fabricated with PDI1 as transporting material. The conversion efficiency for DSSC sensitized by PDI1 is 0.0065%. PDI1 exhibits electrochromic behavior by switching between neutral (red) and oxidized (blue) states. Electron transfer capacity of PDI to the TiO2 was investigated by incorporation of dye as sensitizer in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Soluble dye molecules are very important to prepare dye sensitized solar cell. Solubility was increased with thiophene group

The purpose of this paper is to explore the construct of student satisfaction and analyze its relationship with student loyalty in the context of state and private universities. A 45-item Turkish questionnaire adapted from literature, to which the authors added several items, was administered to MBA students of state- and private, foundation-owned universities located in Istanbul, as the largest city of Turkey. In this study, a two-step confirmative modeling strategy was chosen to test the hypotheses of the theoretical model by using LISREL 8. As the first step of the mentioned approach, a congruent and congeneric measurement model was established for each type of universities; then, in the second stage, hypotheses were tested by analyzing structural models. Research findings show a positive correlation between satisfaction and loyalty. The most important factors of satisfaction for the students attending state-owned universities are academic quality, teaching quality, and appropriateness of career opportunities; however, at private universities teaching quality and supportive services and appropriateness of career opportunities are the most significant factors. Administrative and the quality of library services turned out to be unimportant factors for MBA students both at state and private universities in this study. The distinguishing point of this study, which enhances its originality, was examining the difference between state and private universities separately.

New method and portable measurement device for the calibration of industrial robots

Throughout time, with robotic systems having a more significant impact each day in industrial processes, demand for rapid, repeatable and highly accurate robotic arms has increased, outgrowing the availability of robot calibration options. Even though research on robot calibration has been going on for a long time, implementing a fast, fully automated and affordable calibration system can be hard to find, considering the challenging requirements that a system could bring along with it. This thesis presents an automated calibration method for industrial robots. It is based on the use of a novel, low-cost, wireless, 3D measuring device mounted on the robot end-effector and a portable 3D ball artifact fixed with respect to the robot base. The new device, called TriCal, is essentially a fixture holding three digital indicators (plunger style) with an accuracy of 1.8 μm, the axes of which are orthogonal and intersect at one point, considered to be the robot tool center point (TCP). The artifact contains four 1-inch datum balls, each mounted on heavy-duty riser blocks through stems, and have precisely known relative positions measured on a CMM. The design of the artifact is decided through practical considerations and simulation tests applied through an offline simulation and robot programming software. The measurement procedure contains a physical constraining technique, where the TriCal is probing the datum balls. The method and procedure presented is fully automated and consists of the robot moving its end-effector in such as a way as to perfectly align its TCP with the center of each of the four datum balls, with multiple endeffector orientations. The calibration method and hardware are tested on a six-axis industrial robot (KUKA KR6 R700 sixx). The Modified Denavit-Hartenberg method is used for modeling purposes and the calibration model includes all kinematic and joint stiffness parameters along with an additional parameter defining the relation between two parallel axes. These parameters are later identified using the least-squares method. The joint configurations for calibration are decided through an observability index calculation from an initially generated configuration pool. The efficiency of the new calibration system is validated by measuring the accuracy of the robot after calibration in 500 nearly random end-effector poses using a laser tracker. The same validation is performed after the robot was calibrated using measurements from the laser tracker only. Results show that both measurement methods lead to similar accuracy improvements, with the TriCal yielding maximum position errors of 0.624 mm, and mean position errors of 0.326 mm

This course will expose participants to fundamental understanding of religion, law and war focusing on the nexus of the three. It will do so in a highly participatory manner. The course will focus on the three terms separately and in relation to each other. As both CORE and Diplomacy course, students from different background will be encouraged to learn from one another and be aware of their own learning. The course will encourage a critical subjective response from participants. It will invite an analysis of three original documents: the Vatican II document ‘Nostra Aetate’; the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights; and the UNESCO document on peace as well as actual cases of interest
