Spectral Classification; Old and Contemporary
Beginning with a historical account of the spectral classification, its
refinement through additional criteria is presented. The line strengths and
ratios used in two dimensional classifications of each spectral class are
described. A parallel classification scheme for metal-poor stars and the
standards used for classification are presented. The extension of spectral
classification beyond M to L and T and spectroscopic classification criteria
relevant to these classes are described. Contemporary methods of

Transition Property For Cube-Free Words
We study cube-free words over arbitrary non-unary finite alphabets and prove
the following structural property: for every pair of -ary cube-free
words, if can be infinitely extended to the right and can be infinitely
extended to the left respecting the cube-freeness property, then there exists a
"transition" word over the same alphabet such that is cube free. The
crucial case is the case of the binary alphabet, analyzed in the central part
of the paper.
The obtained "transition property", together with the developed technique,
allowed us to solve cube-free versions of three old open problems by Restivo
and Salemi. Besides, it has some further implications for combinatorics on
words; e.g., it implies the existence of infinite cube-free words of very big

Displacements analysis of self-excited vibrations in turning
The actual research deals with determining by a new protocol the necessary
parameters considering a three-dimensional model to simulate in a realistic way
the turning process on machine tool. This paper is dedicated to the
experimental displacements analysis of the block tool / block workpiece with
self-excited vibrations. In connexion with turning process, the self-excited
vibrations domain is obtained starting from spectra of two accelerometers. The
existence of a displacements plane attached to the tool edge point is revealed.
This plane proves to be inclined compared to the machines tool axes. We
establish that the tool tip point describes an ellipse. This ellipse is very
small and can be considered as a small straight line segment for the stable
cutting process (without vibrations). In unstable mode (with vibrations) the
ellipse of displacements is really more visible. A difference in phase occurs
between the tool tip displacements on the radial direction and on the cutting
one. The feed motion direction and the cutting one are almost in phase. The
values of the long and small ellipse axes (and their ratio) shows that these
sizes are increasing with the feed rate value. The axis that goes through the
stiffness center and the tool tip represents the maximum stiffness direction.
The maximum (resp. minimum) stiffness axis of the tool is perpendicular to the
large (resp. small) ellipse displacements axis. FFT analysis of the
accelerometers signals allows to reach several important parameters and
establish coherent correlations between tool tip displacements and the static -
elastic characteristics of the machine tool components tested
SPECULOOS exoplanet search and its prototype on TRAPPIST
One of the most significant goals of modern science is establishing whether
life exists around other suns. The most direct path towards its achievement is
the detection and atmospheric characterization of terrestrial exoplanets with
potentially habitable surface conditions. The nearest ultracool dwarfs (UCDs),
i.e. very-low-mass stars and brown dwarfs with effective temperatures lower
than 2700 K, represent a unique opportunity to reach this goal within the next
decade. The potential of the transit method for detecting potentially habitable
Earth-sized planets around these objects is drastically increased compared to
Earth-Sun analogs. Furthermore, only a terrestrial planet transiting a nearby
UCD would be amenable for a thorough atmospheric characterization, including
the search for possible biosignatures, with near-future facilities such as the
James Webb Space Telescope. In this chapter, we first describe the physical
properties of UCDs as well as the unique potential they offer for the detection
of potentially habitable Earth-sized planets suitable for atmospheric
characterization. Then, we present the SPECULOOS ground-based transit survey,
that will search for Earth-sized planets transiting the nearest UCDs, as well
as its prototype survey on the TRAPPIST telescopes. We conclude by discussing
the prospects offered by the recent detection by this prototype survey of a
system of seven temperate Earth-sized planets transiting a nearby UCD,

Interplay between pleiotropy and secondary selection determines rise and fall of mutators in stress response
Dramatic rise of mutators has been found to accompany adaptation of bacteria
in response to many kinds of stress. Two views on the evolutionary origin of
this phenomenon emerged: the pleiotropic hypothesis positing that it is a
byproduct of environmental stress or other specific stress response mechanisms
and the second order selection which states that mutators hitchhike to fixation
with unrelated beneficial alleles. Conventional population genetics models
could not fully resolve this controversy because they are based on certain
assumptions about fitness landscape. Here we address this problem using a
microscopic multiscale model, which couples physically realistic molecular
descriptions of proteins and their interactions with population genetics of
carrier organisms without assuming any a priori fitness landscape. We found
that both pleiotropy and second order selection play a crucial role at
different stages of adaptation: the supply of mutators is provided through
destabilization of error correction complexes or fluctuations of production
levels of prototypic mismatch repair proteins (pleiotropic effects), while rise
and fixation of mutators occur when there is a sufficient supply of beneficial
mutations in replication-controlling genes. This general mechanism assures a
robust and reliable adaptation of organisms to unforeseen challenges. This

Associations between HIV-RNA-based indicators and virological and clinical outcomes
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the performance of six HIV-RNA-based quality of care indicators for predicting short-term and long-term outcomes. DESIGN: Multinational cohort study. METHODS: We included EuroSIDA patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART) with ≥3viral load (VL) measurements after baseline (the latest of 01/01/2001 or entry into EuroSIDA). Using multivariate Poisson regression we modelled the association between short-term (resistance, triple-class failure) and long-term (all-cause mortality, any AIDS/non-AIDS clinical event) outcomes and the indicators: (i)viraemia copy years (VCY), (ii) Consecutive months with VL ≥50 copies/mL, (iii) percentage of time on ART spent fully suppressed (%FS), (iv) stable on ART, (v)48 weeks snapshot, and (vi) current VL. Indicators were compared using area under the ROC curve (AUC) and different measures of model fit. RESULTS: Adjusted incidence rate ratios for all outcomes tended to increase with increasing VCY, number of consecutive months with VL ≥50 copies/mL, current VL and with lower %FS, but the gradient of increased risk was weak across strata. None of the indicators reliably identified those at risk of long-term outcomes (AUC 0.54-0.58), but performed consistently better with short-term outcomes (triple class failure [AUC 0.67-0.76]) and resistance [AUC 0.64-0.79]). Goodness of fitvariedwith the outcome evaluated, but differences between indicators were small. CONCLUSIONS: Differences between quality of care indicators were small and no indicator performed consistently better than current VL. Given the simplicity in assessing and interpreting this indicator, wepropose to use current VL when HIV-RNA-based indicators are used to evaluate the efficacy of ART programs
Investigating hyper-vigilance for social threat of lonely children
The hypothesis that lonely children show hypervigilance for social threat was examined in a series of three studies that employed different methods including advanced eye-tracking technology. Hypervigilance for social threat was operationalized as hostility to ambiguously motivated social exclusion in a variation of the hostile attribution paradigm (Study 1), scores on the Children’s Rejection-Sensitivity Questionnaire (Study 2), and visual attention to socially rejecting stimuli (Study 3). The participants were 185 children (11 years-7 months to 12 years-6 months), 248 children (9 years-4 months to 11 years-8 months) and 140 children (8 years-10 months to 12 years-10 months) in the three studies, respectively. Regression analyses showed that, with depressive symptoms covaried, there were quadratic relations between loneliness and these different measures of hypervigilance to social threat. As hypothesized, only children in the upper range of loneliness demonstrated elevated hostility to ambiguously motivated social exclusion, higher scores on the rejection sensitivity questionnaire, and disengagement difficulties when viewing socially rejecting stimuli. Tuberculosis-related mortality in people living with HIV in Europe and Latin America: an international cohort study
BACKGROUND: Management of tuberculosis in patients with HIV in eastern Europe is complicated by the high prevalence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, low rates of drug susceptibility testing, and poor access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). We report 1 year mortality estimates from a multiregional (eastern Europe, western Europe, and Latin America) prospective cohort study: the TB:HIV study. METHODS: Consecutive HIV-positive patients aged 16 years or older with a diagnosis of tuberculosis between Jan 1, 2011, and Dec 31, 2013, were enrolled from 62 HIV and tuberculosis clinics in 19 countries in eastern Europe, western Europe, and Latin America. The primary endpoint was death within 12 months after starting tuberculosis treatment; all deaths were classified according to whether or not they were tuberculosis related. Follow-up was either until death, the final visit, or 12 months after baseline, whichever occurred first. Risk factors for all-cause and tuberculosis-related deaths were assessed using Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox models. FINDINGS: Of 1406 patients (834 in eastern Europe, 317 in western Europe, and 255 in Latin America), 264 (19%) died within 12 months. 188 (71%) of these deaths were tuberculosis related. The probability of all-cause death was 29% (95% CI 26-32) in eastern Europe, 4% (3-7) in western Europe, and 11% (8-16) in Latin America (p<0·0001) and the corresponding probabilities of tuberculosis-related death were 23% (20-26), 1% (0-3), and 4% (2-8), respectively (p<0·0001). Patients receiving care outside eastern Europe had a 77% decreased risk of death: adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 0·23 (95% CI 0·16-0·31). In eastern Europe, compared with patients who started a regimen with at least three active antituberculosis drugs, those who started fewer than three active antituberculosis drugs were at a higher risk of tuberculosis-related death (aHR 3·17; 95% CI 1·83-5·49) as were those who did not have baseline drug-susceptibility tests (2·24; 1·31-3·83). Other prognostic factors for increased tuberculosis-related mortality were disseminated tuberculosis and a low CD4 cell count. 18% of patients were receiving ART at tuberculosis diagnosis in eastern Europe compared with 44% in western Europe and 39% in Latin America (p<0·0001); 12 months later the proportions were 67% in eastern Europe, 92% in western Europe, and 85% in Latin America (p<0·0001). INTERPRETATION: Patients with HIV and tuberculosis in eastern Europe have a risk of death nearly four-times higher than that in patients from western Europe and Latin America. This increased mortality rate is associated with modifiable risk factors such as lack of drug susceptibility testing and suboptimal initial antituberculosis treatment in settings with a high prevalence of drug resistance. The stellar and sub-stellar IMF of simple and composite populations
The current knowledge on the stellar IMF is documented. It appears to become
top-heavy when the star-formation rate density surpasses about 0.1Msun/(yr
pc^3) on a pc scale and it may become increasingly bottom-heavy with increasing
metallicity and in increasingly massive early-type galaxies. It declines quite
steeply below about 0.07Msun with brown dwarfs (BDs) and very low mass stars
having their own IMF. The most massive star of mass mmax formed in an embedded
cluster with stellar mass Mecl correlates strongly with Mecl being a result of
gravitation-driven but resource-limited growth and fragmentation induced
starvation. There is no convincing evidence whatsoever that massive stars do
form in isolation. Various methods of discretising a stellar population are
introduced: optimal sampling leads to a mass distribution that perfectly
represents the exact form of the desired IMF and the mmax-to-Mecl relation,
while random sampling results in statistical variations of the shape of the
IMF. The observed mmax-to-Mecl correlation and the small spread of IMF
power-law indices together suggest that optimally sampling the IMF may be the
more realistic description of star formation than random sampling from a
universal IMF with a constant upper mass limit. Composite populations on galaxy
scales, which are formed from many pc scale star formation events, need to be
described by the integrated galactic IMF. This IGIMF varies systematically from
top-light to top-heavy in dependence of galaxy type and star formation rate,

Solar-type dynamo behaviour in fully convective stars without a tachocline
In solar-type stars (with radiative cores and convective envelopes), the
magnetic field powers star spots, flares and other solar phenomena, as well as
chromospheric and coronal emission at ultraviolet to X-ray wavelengths. The
dynamo responsible for generating the field depends on the shearing of internal
magnetic fields by differential rotation. The shearing has long been thought to
take place in a boundary layer known as the tachocline between the radiative
core and the convective envelope. Fully convective stars do not have a
tachocline and their dynamo mechanism is expected to be very different,
although its exact form and physical dependencies are not known. Here we report
observations of four fully convective stars whose X-ray emission correlates
with their rotation periods in the same way as in Sun-like stars. As the X-ray
activity - rotation relationship is a well-established proxy for the behaviour
of the magnetic dynamo, these results imply that fully convective stars also
operate a solar-type dynamo. The lack of a tachocline in fully convective stars
therefore suggests that this is not a critical ingredient in the solar dynamo
and supports models in which the dynamo originates throughout the convection
