Handling non-compositionality in multilingual CNLs

In this paper, we describe methods for handling multilingual non-compositional constructions in the framework of GF. We specifically look at methods to detect and extract non-compositional phrases from parallel texts and propose methods to handle such constructions in GF grammars. We expect that the methods to handle non-compositional constructions will enrich CNLs by providing more flexibility in the design of controlled languages. We look at two specific use cases of non-compositional constructions: a general-purpose method to detect and extract multilingual multiword expressions and a procedure to identify nominal compounds in German. We evaluate our procedure for multiword expressions by performing a qualitative analysis of the results. For the experiments on nominal compounds, we incorporate the detected compounds in a full SMT pipeline and evaluate the impact of our method in machine translation process.Comment: CNL workshop in COLING 201

Masiinan sisältä on kulutuskulttuuria tutkiva teos. Se valaisee sekä kulutuskäyttäytymiseemme johtaneita seikkoja, että siitä aiheutuneita ongelmia. Käsittelen teorioita, kuten miten 1920-luvun lama on johtanut suunnitellun hajoamisen syntyyn, miksi nykyelektroniikka on hajoaa helpommin kuin vanha ja yksinkertainen, ja miksi uuden laitteen osto tuntuu kannattavammalta kuin vanhan korjaaminen. Pohdin myös miten länsimainen kuluttaminen vaikuttaa Ghanalaisten elämään ja tuhoaa Afrikan luontoa, ja kuinka lahjoitetut vaatteet johtavat järjettömiin jätemääriin ja Afrikan vaateteollisuuden kuihtumiseen. Olen löytänyt myös mahdollisen vastauksen kulutuskulttuuriin kyllästyneille: degrowth eli kulutuksen hidastamisen kautta voidaan mahdollisesti hidastaa pallomme tuhoutumista. Sarjan visuaalinen ilme on seistsemän graafista kuvaa koneista, jotka on purettu ja aseteltu tarkkaan järjestykseen. Koneet – kamera, puhelin, lamppu, kirjoituskone, faksi, kelamankka ja kello– edustavat nykypäivän koneiden tai asioiden edeltäjiä niin symbolisesti kuin käytännön tasolla. Inspiraation lähteitä ovat niin sosiaalinen media, erityisesti Things Organised Neatly –blogi, kuin isäni suuri rakkaus: vanhat autot ja niiden kokoaminen.Inuti apparaten är en serie som undersöker konsumtionskulturen. Jag tar fram både saker som har lett till konsumtionskulturen och vad den orsakar. Jag belyser teorier, som till exempel hur 1930-talets lågkonjunktur har lett till planerad föråldring, varför dagens elektronik går lättare sönder än gammal och simpel sådan, och varför det är mera lönsamt att köpa nytt än att reparera det gamla. Jag undersöker också hur västerländsk konsumtion påverkar livet i Ghana, och hur donerade kläder leder till absurda mängder av avfall och förstör Afrikas egen klädindustri. Jag har också hittat, i alla fall en lösning till problemet: degrowth, alltså hur man genom att minska konsumtionen kanske kan sakta ner förstörningen av vår planet. Den visuella serien består av sju grafiska bilder av apparater, som jag har plockat isär och ställt ut i en noggrann ordning. Apparaterna – lampan, bandspelaren, kameran, klockan, faxen, telefonen och skrivmaskinen – representerar föregångare till moderna apparater och saker, både symboliskt och i praktiken. Jag har dragit inspiration både från sociala medier, speciellt Things Organised Neatly–bloggen, och från min pappas stora kärlek: gamla bilar och renovering av dem.Inside the machine is a series that investigates the consumption culture. I disclose both reasons that led to consumption culture and what it causes. I enlighten theories like for example how 1930’s big depression has caused planned obsolescence, why modern technology breaks easier than older and simpler technology, and why is it more valuable to buy a new than repair the old. I investigate also how western consuming affects life in Ghana and how clothes donations lead to absurd amounts of waste and destroy Africa’s own clothes industry. I have also found at least one answer to the problem: degrowth –how reducing consumption might slow down the destruction of our planet. The visual side is a series of seven graphical pictures of machines that I have disassemble and arranged in a precise order. The machines – a lamp, a tape recorder, a camera, a clock, a fax, a telephone and a typewriter – represent predecessor of modern machines and things, both symbolically and in practice. Koekuvaukset, harjoitukset ja niihin liittyvät valinnat : erään ohjaajan ja elokuvan eteneminen castingista kuvauksien alkuun

Tämä on toiminnallinen opinnäytetyö, joka koostuu kirjallisesta tutkielmasta ja teososasta, kirjoittajan ohjaamasta 25-minuuttisesta lyhytelokuvasta Kurjet. Kirjallisessa osassa keskitytään analysoimaan näyttelijöiden ohjaamiseen liittyviä valintoja, joita ohjaaja tekee, ja metodeja, joita tämä käyttää. Työssä käydään läpi elokuvan koekuvaus- ja harjoitusvaiheet ja pohditaan näitä erityisesti amatööri- ja lapsinäyttelijöiden kanssa työskentelyn kannalta. Työn tavoite on analysoida ohjaajan kannalta sitä osaa näyttelijöiden kanssa työskentelystä, joka tapahtuu ennen kuvausten alkua. Työssä kerrataan, minkälaisen prosessin kautta ohjaaja päätyi valitsemiinsa näyttelijöihin. Siinä selvitetään myös yleisimpiä tapoja harjoituttaa näyttelijöitä ja kerrotaan erilaisista harjoittelumetodeista ja harjoitusjaksojen rakenteesta. Työssä käydään läpi myös niin tekijän kuin joidenkin ohjausoppikirjojen näkemyksiä harjoitusten tarpeellisuudesta ja riskeistä. Ohjaajan kuvauksia edeltävien työvaiheiden kautta pohditaan myös mm. eroja aikuisen ja lapsen ohjaamisessa, käsikirjoituksen vaikeiden teemojen analysoimista lapsinäyttelijän kanssa ja tutun näyttelijän kanssa työskentelemisen etuja ja haittoja. Kirjallisen osion lähtökohtana on ollut analysoida kirjoittajan omia työskentelytapoja ammattilaisten näkemysten pohjalta ja tutkia eri tyylejä harjoitella näyttelijöiden kanssa. Tavoitteena on ollut myös löytää joitain ohjeita ja yleisiä käytäntöjä koskien sellaisia ohjauksellisia päätöksiä ja alueita, jotka tuntuvat usein kovin intuitiivisilta. Työn lopputulos on pohdiskeleva ja käytännönläheinen tutkielma ohjaajan työstä näyttelijän kanssa, ennen kuin kamera käy. Se tarjoaa erilaisia vaihtoehtoja ja ideoita näyttelijöiden koekuvaukseen ja heidän kanssaan harjoittelemiseen. Nämä ideat voivat olla käyttökelpoisia kaikille näihin vaiheisiin osallistuville, mutta erityisesti kuitenkin ohjaajille.The thesis consists of a short film, “Kurjet”, which was directed by the author, and a written part, which analyzes the process of making the movie. In the written part the main focus is on the casting process and the rehearsals. It examines the choices that are made by the director when choosing the actors and the methods that can be used in rehearsals, especially when working with child actors and amateurs. The goal of this thesis is to analyze the work, that a director carries out with the actors, before the shootings. What can he or she do and what is perhaps recommended by professional directors. The thesis tells how this particular director came to her conclusions when casting and how she rehearsed with the actresses that she chose. The thesis also explains the most common ways of rehearsing with actors and goes through the methods and the structure of rehearsals. The author evaluates some film making text books’, as well as her own, outlooks on the risks and importance of rehearsing, the differences in directing an adult and a child and the pros and cons of directing an actor that you know. The starting point for the written part was to analyze the author's own ways of working and then compare the investigated ways to the views of the film industry’s professionals. The emphasis is on the period before the shootings. A further goal was to find some common “rules” to the decisions that a director makes that often seem so intuitive. The outcome is a thoughtful and practical treatise on the work of a director before he shouts “action”. It offers different guide lines on how to choose a cast for a film and options on how to rehearse with it when it is chosen. Kolkkaa myyrä – Ikääntyvien toimintakykyä tukeva liikuntakonsepti

Fysioterapian keskeisinä tavoitteina on ylläpitää ihmisen toiminta- ja liikkumiskykyä ja ennaltaehkäistä toimintarajoitteiden syntyä. Fyysinen inaktiivisuus altistaa useille sairauksille, joten ohjaus omaehtoisen liikunnan lisäämiseen voidaan nähdä osana ennaltaehkäisevää fysioterapiaa. Ikääntyviä tulee kannustaa fyysisen aktiivisuuden ylläpitoon ja tämän päämäärään saavuttamisessa voidaan hyödyntää esimerkiksi hyvinvointiteknologian tarjoamia mahdollisuuksia. Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli tuottaa uutta tietoa ikääntyvien toimintakyvyn, terveyskunnon osa-alueiden ja muistitoimintojen ylläpitämiseksi liikunnan keinoin. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli luoda ikääntyvien toimintakykyä ylläpitävä liikuntakonsepti Ludus Helsinki Oy:n laitteistoa käyttäen. Ludus Helsinki Oy on suomalainen teknologiayritys, joka on keskittynyt edistämään kaikenikäisten omaehtoista liikkumista pelien ja leikkien keinoin. Liikuntakonsepti laadittiin Ludus Helsinki Oy:n luomia liikuntapelejä hyödyntäen ikääntyvien terveyskuntoa koskevan uusimman tutkimustiedon pohjalta. Liikuntakonseptiin valittiin viisi peliä, joista koostettiin lihaskuntoa, hengitys- ja verenkiertoelimistöä, luustoa, liikkuvuutta, reaktiokykyä, tasapainoa ja muistia aktivoiva kokonaisuus. Laadittua liikuntakonseptia testattiin neljästä perusterveestä ikääntyneestä koostuvan testiryhmän avulla. Testin tarkoituksena oli kokeilla käytännössä liikuntakonseptin soveltuvuutta tälle kohderyhmälle. Arviointi tehtiin havainnoimalla testiryhmän suorituksia ja käymällä avoin palautekeskustelu, jonka aikana testiryhmä pääsi jakamaan kokemuksiaan pelistä. Konsepti muokattiin lopulliseen muotoonsa havainnoinnin ja palautteiden perusteella. Kaikki testiin osallistuneet henkilöt olivat innostuneita liikuntakonseptista ja osallistuivat testitilanteeseen aktiivisesti. Liikuntakonsepti vaikutti toteutuskelpoiselta valitulle kohderyhmälle ja sitä voidaan käyttää liikkumista aktivoivassa ja ennaltaehkäisevässä fysioterapiatyössä. Jatkotutkimuksena olisi mielenkiintoista selvittää liikuntakonseptin avulla säännöllisesti toteutetun harjoittelun vaikutuksia ja sen soveltuvuutta myös muille kohderyhmille. Because physical inactivity subjects to numerous diseases, the guidance to increase the level of voluntary physical activity can be seen as a part of preentive physiotherapy. The elderly should be encouraged to maintain their physical activity and for this purpose the possibilities offered by welfare technology can be utilized. The purpose of this thesis was to produce new information about maintaining the functional ability, health-related physical fitness and memory functions of the elderly through the means of exercise. The goal of this thesis was to create an exercise concept to preserve the functional ability of the elderly using the equipment of Ludus Helsinki. This Finnish technology company focuses on the promotion of voluntary physical activity in all age groups by the means of games and plays. The exercise concept was created using the exercise games of Ludus Helsinki and the latest research on the health-related physical fitness of the elderly. The exercise concept consists of five games that activate the muscles, the cardiovascular system, the bones, the mobility, the reactional ability, the postural balance and the memory. The concept was tested by a group of four healthy elderly people. The purpose of the test was to examine the concept´s suitability for this target group. The evaluation was carried out by observing the performance of the test group as well as through an open feedback conversation during which the test group was able to share their experiences of the game. The concept was modified to its final form according to the observations and the feedback. Everyone who participated in the test was enthusiastic about the concept and engaged actively in the test situation. The exercise concept seemed to be appropriate for this target group and it can be used in preventative physiotherapy. In the future it would be interesting to study the effects of regularly conducted training based on the concept. Also the concept’s suitability to other target groups could be studied. Preparing for the unprecedented - Towards quantitative oil risk assessment in the Arctic marine areas

The probability of major oil accidents in Arctic seas is increasing alongside with increasing maritime traffic. Hence, there is a growing need to understand the risks posed by oil spills to these unique and sensitive areas. So far these risks have mainly been acknowledged in terms of qualitative descriptions. We introduce a probabilistic framework, based on a general food web approach, to analyze ecological impacts of oil spills. We argue that the food web approach based on key functional groups is more appropriate for providing holistic view of the involved risks than assessments based on single species. We discuss the issues characteristic to the Arctic that need a special attention in risk assessment, and provide examples how to proceed towards quantitative risk estimates. The conceptual model presented in the paper helps to identify the most important risk factors and can be used as a template for more detailed risk assessments.Peer reviewe

A Case for Investigating the Ethics of Artificial Life?

A major stream of Artificial Life (ALife) research aims to build synthetic life forms, operating in virtual worlds, implemented as computer programs. A clear long-term target for this research is the evolution of digital life-forms with a complexity of structure and behaviour analogous to biological life-forms, potentially exhibiting intelligence and self-awareness. The creation of intelligent, self-aware digital life-forms has clear ethical implications, but there is no current research into how these ethical issues might be addressed. This paper argues that such ethical research is needed. Furthermore, it describes our future research plans to build a solid philosophical foundation for the consideration of these ethical issues

Sosiaalisten representaatioiden tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan tyypillisesti arkiymmärryksen muodostumista ja sisältöä ihmisille ajankohtaisista ja merkittävistä ilmiöistä kuten ilmastonmuutoksesta, luomuruoasta, Euroopan unionista tai erilaisista terveyteen ja sairauteen liittyvistä teemoista kuten mielenterveydestä, masennuksesta tai AIDSista. Lähestymistapa ohjaa kiinnittämään huomioita erilaisiin tiedonvälitys- ja kommunikaatiomuotoihin ja siihen, miten sosiaalinen konteksti, ryhmäjäsenyydet ja yhteisön historia vaikuttavat arkiymmärryksen syntyyn. Kyseessä on paradigma, jolla on omat vahvat tutkimusperinteensä ja runsas menetelmällinen arsenaali. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelemme, minkälaisia metodologisia edellytyksiä ja mahdollisuuksia sosiaalisten representaatioiden lähestymistapa asettaa tutkijalle. Esittelemme erilaisia aineistonkeruu- ja analyysimenetelmiä, jotka alan tutkimuksessa ovat vakiintuneita mutta anglosaksisessa tiedemaailmassa toistaiseksi melko vähän hyödynnettyjä, kuten sana-assosiaatiot ja visuaaliset aineistonkeruu- ja analyysitavat.Peer reviewe

A proactive approach for maritime safety policy making for the Gulf of Finland : seeking best practices

A rapid increase in maritime traffic together with challenging navigation conditions and a vulnerable ecosystem has evoked calls for improving maritime safety in the Gulf of Finland, (the Baltic Sea). It is suggested that these improvements will be the result of adopting a regionally effective proactive approach to safety policy formulation and management. A proactive approach is grounded on a formal process of identifying, assessing and evaluating accident risks, and adjusting policies or management practices before accidents happen. Currently, maritime safety is globally regulated by internationally agreed prescriptive rules, which are usually revised in reaction to accidents. The proactive Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) is applied to risks common to a ship type or to a particular hazard, when deemed necessary, whereas regional FSA applications are rare. An extensive literature review was conducted in order to examine the opportunities for developing a framework for the GoF for handling regional risks at regional level. Best practices were sought from nuclear safety management and fisheries management, and from a particular case related to maritime risk management. A regional approach that sees maritime safety as a holistic system, and manages it by combining a scientific risk assessment with stakeholder input to identify risks and risk control options, and to evaluate risks is proposed. A regional risk governance framework can improve safety by focusing on actual regional risks, designing tailor-made safety measures to control them, enhancing a positive safety culture in the shipping industry, and by increasing trust among all involved.Peer reviewe
