A DOCUMENTATION OF MIXED MEDIA: SIX EAST BAY ARTISTS AN EXHIBITION FOR THE BERKELEY ART CENTER
This thesis documents the organization of Mixed Media: Six East Bay Artists, an exhibition of collage, assemblage, mixed media drawings, and graphic art by East Bay artists presented at the upper level gallery of the Joseph Chowning Gallery in San Francisco, from April 1 to April 14, 1982.
The exhibition was originally scheduled to open at the Berkeley Art Center as part of the continuing exhibition program; however, an act of arson was committed on the BAC in December, 1981, that destroyed a significant portion of the building and prevented the show from opening as scheduled. The exhibition was developed with adherence to the philosophy of exhibitions as set forth by the BAC Guidelines,1 and was designed to round out the two year exhibition schedule from August, 1980 to September, 1982 (see Appendix).
The major purpose of the exhibit was to review the accomplishments of East Bay artists working in mixed media who were making new contributions to this form of visual expression. Additionally, the goal of the exhibition was to convey the richness and complexity inherent in mixed media and its special ability to express, quite powerfully, diverse intellectual, social, philosophical and emotional ideas. I attempted to achieve this goal through curatorial decision making, educational texts, and exhibition design
