Pre-participation Cardiac Screening in Young Athletes: Models and Criteria

This is the second of two review articles focusing on the value of preparticipation cardiac screening in young athletes. The article focuses on the efficacy of the resting 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), physical examination, and medical history questionnaire, which commonly make up the first stage of a cardiac screening protocol. The review then focuses on specific structural and electrical abnormalities which are responsible for sudden cardiac death (SCD) in young athletes – the most common of which is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The identification of appropriate ‘red flag’ signs and symptoms is essential for teasing out potential pathological conditions and allowing differentiation from often benign physiological adaptations. The final section provides guidance on how the resting 12-lead ECG can be used to separate pathological from physiological adaptations in young athletes

International Livestock Research in the CGIAR: Report of the Steering Committee

Report of the CGIAR Steering Committee on International Livestock Research considered at TAC 62 and CGIAR International Centers Week, October 1993. The report discussed the Group's proposed new integrated livestock strategy, which stressed the role of livestock - and ruminants in particular - as components of combined crop-tree-livestock production systems. It proposed creation of a new livestock center (later to be designated ILRI) using ILCA and ILRAD as a base. A timetable and consultative approach for planning the center, and internal planning at the two existing centers were proposed.The new center would conduct strategic research, and serve as a convener for collaborative efforts in livestock. The committee noted that TAC, recognizing the location specificity of most livestock production systems, had recommended concentration on seven ecoregional collaborative programs

The impact of IFRS 7 on the significance of Financial Instruments disclosure:evidence from Jordan

Purpose – The main aim of this paper is to investigate Financial Instrument (FI) disclosures provided by Jordanian listed companies under IFRS 7 as compared to those supplied under IAS 30/32. Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 82 Jordanian listed companies is used in this monograph. A disclosure index checklist was constructed to measure FI information provided by the sample companies. Findings – The study finds that a larger number of Jordanian listed companies provided a greater level of FI-related information after IFRS 7 was implemented. Specifically, the sample firms provided 47% of the disclosure index items after implementing IFRS 7 as compared to 30% under IAS 30/32. In addition, an analysis of FI disclosure by industry revealed that the highest level of disclosure was provided by firms in the banking sector. Moreover, the analysis of FI disclosure pre- and post- the implementation of IFRS 7 revealed specific aspects of usefulness. In particular, some components of FI disclosure (Balance Sheet and Fair Value) showed no significant differences within and across sectors post the implementation of IFRS 7 suggesting that the new standard may have enhanced the comparability of such information. Research Limitations/implications - The results of the current study have a number of implications for policy-makers. First, they provide a great deal of insight for the IASB about the relevance of its standards to countries outside the Western context. In addition, the findings provide valuable insights for policy-makers in Jordan who are concerned about the implications of mandatory disclosures. Originality/value – The analysis of FI disclosure in developing countries in general, and in Jordan in particular, has been overlooked by the extant literature and therefore this study is the first of its kind to examine this research issue for a sample of Jordanian firms. <br/

Human anatomy nomenclature rules for the computer age

Information systems are increasing in importance in biomedical sciences and medical practice. The nomenclature rules of human anatomy were reviewed for adequacy with respect to modern needs. New rules are proposed here to ensure that each Latin term is uniquely associated with an anatomical entity, as short and simple as possible, and machine-interpretable. Observance of these recommendations will also benefit students and translators of the Latin terms into other languages

The influence of standards and clinical guidelines on prosthetic and orthotic service quality : a scoping review

OBJECTIVES: Standards and guidelines are an integral part of prosthetic and orthotic service delivery in the developed world underpinned by an assumption that they lead to improved services. Implementing them has a cost, however, and that cost needs to be justified, particularly in resource-limited environments. This scoping review thus asks the question, "What is the evidence of the impact of standards and guidelines on service delivery outcomes in prosthetics and orthotics?" MATERIALS AND METHODS: A structured search of three electronic databases (Medline, Scopus and Web of Science) followed by manual searching of title, abstract and full text, yielded 29 articles. RESULTS: Four categories of papers were identified: Descriptions and Commentaries (17 papers), Guideline Development (7), Guideline Testing (2) and Standards implementation (3). No articles were explicitly designed to assess the impact of standards and guidelines on service delivery outcomes in prosthetics and orthotics. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Studies tended to be commentaries on or descriptions of guideline development, testing or implementation of standards. The literature is not sufficiently well developed to warrant the cost and effort of a systematic review. Future primary research should seek to demonstrate whether and how guidelines and standards improve the outcomes for people that require prostheses, orthoses and other assistive devices. Implications for Rehabilitation International Standards and Clinical Guidelines are now an integral part of clinical service provision in prosthetics and orthotics in the developed world. Complying with standards and guidelines has a cost and, particularly in resource-limited environments, it should be possible to justify this in terms of the resulting benefits. This scoping review concludes that there have been no previous studies designed to directly quantify the effects of implementing standards and guidelines on service delivery

The employers’ priorities : vocational skills and capabilities for management accountants

There has been increasing pressure on the providers of higher education to align courses with the needs of employers. Surveys have documented the importance of developing a broad range of vocational skills. However, priorities must be established, based on the demands of the workplace, within this identified skills gap. The first section of this paper identifies the need for the development of vocational skills in general, and then specifically in the area of management accounting. The second section presents the views of employers of management accountants on the relative importance of a specified set of vocational skills, and the level of these skills exhibited by graduates and recently qualified management accountants. These measures are then combined in a ‘weighted importance indicator’ to indicate the skills that are most in need of development

Transient thermoelectricity in a vibrating quantum dot in Kondo regime

We investigate the time evolution of the thermopower in a vibrating quantum dot suddenly shifted into the Kondo regime via a gate voltage by adopting the time-dependent non-crossing approximation and linear response Onsager relations. Behaviour of the instantaneous thermopower is studied for a range of temperatures both in zero and strong electron-phonon coupling. We argue that inverse of the saturation value of decay time of thermopower to its steady state value might be an alternative tool in determination of the Kondo temperature and the value of the electron-phonon coupling strength.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Physics Letters
