Tectono-metamorphic evolution and significance of shear-zone lithologies in Akebono Rock, Lützow-Holm Complex, East Antarctica

    Get PDF
We describe a major shear zone exposed at Akebono Rock and discuss its deformation and metamorphic history, with a view to providing a better understanding of the geological history of the Lützow-Holm Complex. Three deformation episodes are recognized: D1 produced open folds (F1), boudinage and a regional ductile foliation, whilst the related metamorphic facies is characterized by stable garnet. F1 folding is dominantly preserved in the eastern part of the study area. During D2, an isoclinal to tight asymmetric F2 folds developed mainly in the west part of the region, accompanied by an S2 shear, under biotite facies retrograde metamorphism. The D3 episode involved the formation of the major shear zone, characterized by mylonite and L-tectonite fabrics, which took place at ~610–660°C and 4–5 kbar. Large, sigmoidal garnet core domains have S-shaped inclusion trails, suggesting that syntectonic garnet growth occurred before the formation of the shear zone. Estimated P-T conditions suggest that the sigmoidal garnet-bearing amphibolite was recrystallized at a deeper crustal level and was brought to a higher level during the formation of the shear zone. Crustal-scale deformation involving syntectonic recrystallization and shearing of Akebono Rock is a key issue for reconsidering the evolution of the Lützow-Holm Complex.http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_650

Quantitative gait analysis of patients with bilateral hip osteoarthritis excluding the influence of walking speed

    Get PDF
Background The purpose of this study was to investigate gait characteristics of patients with bilateral hip osteoarthritis (BHO) independent of walking speed. Methods We measured gait parameters in 12 BHO patients during free walking activities and in 12 normal adults during both free walking and slow walking activities using a three-dimensional computerized gait analysis system. Results Patients with BHO had a lower walking speed, step length, and cadence than normal subjects during free walking. When compared with normal subjects walking at a slow speed, the walking speed difference among BHO patients disappeared, although BHO patients retained a relatively high cadence. Kinematic and kinetic factor analysis of BHO patients at free speed compared to normal subjects walking at a slow speed showed a forward-tilted pelvic angle in the BHO patients that dropped to that of the ipsilateral side during the stance phase. The peak extension and abduction angle of the hip and the peak abduction moment of the hip were all low, whereas the peak generation power of the ankle was high in BHO patients. Conclusions Gait characteristics of patients with BHO, independent of walking speed, were as follows: (1) increased cadence and ankle generation power; (2) reduced step width, hip extension, and abduction angle as well as a lower hip abduction moment; (3) maintained forward tilting of the pelvis during gait cycle; and (4) appearance of a dropped pelvis during the stance phase.othe

The 58th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE-58) conducted geological field surveys in the regions of Lützow-Holm Bay, Prince Olav Coast, and Enderby Land during the 2016−2017 austral summer season. The field party consisted of four Japanese geologists and three Asian geologists (Thai, Indonesian, Mongolian), and was joined periodically by JARE-58 expedition leader, Prof. Motoyoshi. Field parties were supported throughout the summer season by a smaller secondary helicopter (AS350) in addition to two main helicopters (CH101) stationed on the icebreaker Shirase. This report summarizes field preparations and the geological work undertaken, and highlights several key points for future planning and research.departmental bulletin pape

Effects of Early Muscle Strengthening of Hip Abductor and Adductor Muscles after Surgery for Pelvic Fracture

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of muscle strengthening of hip abductor and adductor muscles just after surgery on gait at discharge. [Subjects and Methods] Subjects were twelve patients who had open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for unstable unilateral fractures of the pelvis. Six patients started muscle strengthening exercises at two weeks after surgery (regular rehabilitation group, RR), and another six patients started muscle strengthening of hip abductor and adductor muscles at two or three days after surgery (early rehabilitation group, ER). All patients were assessed for free gait without a cane when they were discharged from hospital. Gait analysis was performed using the VICON 370 system with six cameras and four force plates. [Results] Walking speed, step length and cadence showed no significant differences between the two groups. The hip abductor moment of the ER group was significantly higher than that of the RR group. [Conclusion] Our results suggest that early muscle strengthening of hip abductor and adductor muscles might improve hip abductor moment at discharge. othe
