A near-infrared and optical photometric study of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy: implications for the metallicity spread
We present here a detailed study of the Sculptor dSph galaxy red giant branch
(RGB) and horizontal branch (HB) morphology, combining new near-infrared
photometry from CIRSI, with optical data from the ESO WFI. For a Sculptor-like
old and generally metal-poor system, the position of RGB stars on the
colour-magnitude diagram is mainly metallicity dependent. The advantage of
using optical-NIR colours is that the position of the RGB locus is much more
sensitive to metallicity than with optical colours alone. In contrast the
horizontal branch (HB) morphology is strongly dependent on both metallicity and
age. Therefore a detailed study of both the RGB in optical-NIR colours and the
HB can help break the age-metallicity degeneracy. Our measured photometric
width of the Sculptor giant branch corresponds to a range in metallicity of
0.75 dex. We detect the RGB and AGB bumps in both the NIR and optical
luminosity functions, and derive from them a mean metallicity of [M/H] = -1.3
+/- 0.1. From isochrone fitting we derive a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.42
with a dispersion of 0.2 dex. These photometric estimators are for the first
time consistent with individual metallicity measurements derived from
spectroscopic observations. No spatial gradient is detected in the RGB
morphology within a radius of 13 arcmin, twice the core radius. On the other
hand, a significant gradient is observed in the HB morphology index, confirming
the `second parameter problem' present in this galaxy. These observations are
consistent with an early extended period of star formation continuing in time

The Pseudogap in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4): A Raman Viewpoint
We report the results of Raman scattering experiments on single crystals of
La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) [La214] as a function of temperature and doping. In
underdoped compounds low-energy B1g spectral weight is depleted in association
with the opening of a pseudogap on regions of the Fermi surface located near
(pi, 0) and (0, pi). The magnitude of the depletion increases with decreasing
doping, and in the most underdoped samples, with decreasing temperature. The
spectral weight that is lost at low-energies (omega < 800 cm-1) is transferred
to the higher energy region normally occupied by multi-magnon scattering. From
the normal state B2g spectra we have determined the scattering rate
Gamma(omega, T) of qausiparticles located near the diagonal directions in
k-space, (pi/2, pi/2) regions. In underdoped compounds, Gamma(omega, T) is
suppressed at low temperatures for energies less than Eg(x) ~ 800 cm-1. The
observed doping dependence of the two-magnon scattering and the scattering rate
suppression thus suggest that the pseudogap is characterized by an energy scale
Eg ~ J, where J is the antiferromagnetic super-exchange energy. Comparison with
the results from other techniques provides a consistent picture of the

Brief psychosexual therapy: reflections on the provision of a time-limited therapy service in a sexual health clinic
Time-limited psychological therapy is increasingly the norm in publically funded healthcare systems. Although brevity of treatment is a characteristic of modern sex therapy, many practitioners would nevertheless consider the provision of effective psychosexual therapy in six or fewer sessions to be a daunting prospect. In this paper we reflect on the challenges, opportunities, and changes to practice associated with the development and delivery of a brief psychosexual therapy service within a specialist sexual health clinic in England. We endeavour to integrate our experiential learning with relevant research findings and principles from the fields of psychosexual therapy and brief psychological therapy. We also explore some of the broader issues associated with the development and provision of brief psychosexual therapy, including the possible implications for the education and training of
