    Impactos ENSO en cuencas atlánticas de Sudamérica

    Interannual changes in precipitation cause significant effects on the Pacific watersheds of South America. Large rivers flowing to the Atlantic Ocean as the Paraná and Uruguay are also influenced by ENSO-triggered floods causing significant impacts on the economies of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. At the same time, the floodplains of small rivers are also sensitive to strong ENSOs. Floods occur approximately simultaneously in subtropical watersheds of Brazil and high-latitude watersheds of North Patagonia. ENSO-triggered floods were recorded during the years 1941-42, 1982-83 and 1997- 98. Several floods impacted along the Itajaí River affecting the higher (Blumenau city) and lower estuary (Itajaí city). The Guaiba River, at the headlands of Lagoa dos Patos, has repeatedly flooded Porto Alegre. At the Río de la Plata basin, significant increases in the discharges were assigned to the Paraná and the Uruguay rivers. The small basin of the Quequén Grande River without extended floodplains is subject to periodic failure of its margins. The Colorado River, the northern limit of Patagonia, is allochthonous and its watershed was artificial and progressively modified; the ENSO event of 1983 caused an increase in its salinity due to the sudden reactivation of the DesaguaderoCuracó system.Los cambios interanuales en las precipitaciones causan significativos efectos en las cuencas pacíficas de Sudamérica. Los grandes ríos que fluyen hacia el Océano Atlántico como el Paraná y el Uruguay también son influenciados por estas inundaciones originadas por estos eventos ENSO causando significativos impactos en las economías de Argentina, Brasil y Uruguay. Asimismo, las planicies aluviales de los pequeños ríos también son sensibles a los ENSOs fuertes. Las crecidas ocurren casi simultáneamente en las cuencas subtropicales de Brasil como en las cuencas de altas latitudes de Patagonia. Inundaciones gavilladas por eventos ENSO fueron registradas en los años 1941-42, 1982-83 y 1997-98. Varias inundaciones afectaron al río Itajaí afectando las porciones más altas (Blumenau) y bajas del estuario (Itajaí). El río Guaíba, en las cabeceras de la Lagoa dos Patos, ha repetidamente inundado Porto Alegre. En la cuenca del Río de la Plata, incrementos significativos de su descarga fueron originados por los ríos Paraná y Uruguay.     Uniform female-biased sex ratios in alpine willows

    Premise of the study: The development of biased sex ratios in dioecious plant species has been ascribed to either (1) factors influencing differential adult mortality of male and female plants or (2) factors acting at an early life stage that determine seed sex ratio or seedling survival.Methods: To discriminate between these two competing hypotheses, we surveyed sex and age of 379 individuals from five species of the genus Salix across 11 alpine valleys in the southwest Yukon.Key results: We observed uniformly female-biased sex ratios of approximately 2:1 across all adult age cohorts and patch sizes of the five willow species. No spatial variation in sex ratio occurred that could be associated with site-specific characteristics such as elevation or aspect.Conclusions: Our results indicate that the female-biased sex ratios in the alpine willow species investigated in this study are not a consequence of ecological processes acting on established adult plants. The sex ratio is instead determined at an early life stage by a mechanism that remains unknown.</p

    Stable isotope analysis of human hair and nail samples: the effects of storage on samples

    When submitting samples for analysis, maintaining sample integrity is essential. Appropriate packaging must be used to prevent damage, contamination or loss of sample. This is particularly important for stable isotope analysis by isotope ratio mass spectrometry as this technique is capable of detecting subtle differences in isotopic composition with great precision. In a novel study, scalp hair and fingernail samples were placed in five different types of packaging, routinely used in forensic laboratories and stored for 6 weeks and 6 months. Samples were subsequently cleaned and submitted for 13C/12C, 15N/14N, 2H/1H and 18O/16O analysis. Results from 13C analysis indicate that type of packaging can cause slight changes in 13C abundance over time. Differences were noted in the 15N isotope signatures of both hair and nail samples after 6-week storage, but not after 6 months. This apparent discrepancy could be a result of the packaging not being properly sealed in the 6 weeks study. Fewer differences were noted when analyzing samples for 2H and 18O abundance

    A First Stochastic General Framework to Model the Project Finance Cash Flows under Monopolistic Situations

    The main aim of this work is to model the cash flows and cost dynamics for a Project Finance. Large scale capital-intensive projects usually require substantial investments up front and only generate revenues to cover their costs in the long term. The abandonment flexibility affects each project independently. This is the only one that we consider in this study and it is quite different from the idea to abandon due to a common (specific) catastrophic event. This option is exercised under those situations of expected costs to completion higher than the expected cash flow, that is, during the investment period in the development phase.     Phase separation dynamics in colloid-polymer mixtures: the effect of interaction range

    Colloid-polymer mixtures may undergo either fluid-fluid phase separation or gelation. This depends on the depth of the quench (polymer concentration) and polymer-colloid size ratio. We present a real-space study of dynamics in phase separating colloid-polymer mixtures with medium- to long-range attractions (polymer-colloid size ratio q_R=0.45-0.89, with the aim of understanding the mechanism of gelation as the range of the attraction is changed. In contrast to previous studies of short-range attractive systems, where gelation occurs shortly after crossing the equilibrium phase boundary, we find a substantial region of fluid-fluid phase separation. On deeper quenches the system undergoes a continuous crossover to gel formation. We identify two regimes, `classical' phase separation, where single particle relaxation is faster than the dynamics of phase separation, and `viscoelastic' phase separation, where demixing is slowed down appreciably due to slow dynamics in the colloid-rich phase. Particles at the surface of the strands of the network exhibit significantly greater mobility than those buried inside the gel strand which presents a method for coarsening.Comment: 8 page
