Behaviours of natural organic matter in membrane filtration for surface water treatment : a review
Membrane application in surface water treatment provides many advantages over conventional treatment. However, this effort is hampered by the fouling issue, which restricts its widespread application due to increases in hydraulic resistances, operational and maintenance costs, deterioration of productivity and frequency of membrane regeneration problems. This paper discusses natural organic matter (NOM) and its components as the major membrane foulants that occur during the water filtration process, possible fouling mechanisms relating to reversible and irreversible of NOM fouling, current techniques used to characterize fouling mechanisms and methods to control fouling. Feed properties, membrane characteristics, operational conditions and solution chemistry were also found to strongly influence the nature and extent of NOM fouling. Findings of such studies are highlighted. The understanding of the combined roles of controlling factors and the methods used is very important in order to choose and optimize the best technique and conditions during surface water treatment. The future potential of membrane application for NOM removal is also discussed
The detection and classification of blast cell in Leukaemia Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia (AML M3) blood using simulated annealing and neural networks
This paper was delivered at AIME 2011: 13th Conference on Artifical Intelligence in Medicine.This paper presents a method for the detection and classification of blast cells in M3 with others sub-types using simulated annealing and neural networks. In this paper, we increased our test result from 10 images to 20 images. We performed Hill Climbing, Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithms for detecting the blast cells. As a result, simulated annealing is the “best” heuristic search for detecting the leukaemia cells. From the detection, we performed features extraction on the blast cells and we classifying based on M3 and other sub-types using neural networks. We received convincing result which has targeting around 97% in classifying of M3 with other sub-types. Aplikasi Berbasis Web Pendeteksi Plagiarisme Menggunakan Algoritma Himpunan Kata
Plagiarisme adalah penggunaan tulisan orang lain dalam tulisan sendiri tanpa memberikan kredit terhadap penulis asli. Tindakan ini membuat pembaca menganggap tulisan tersebut asli dan bukan kutipan. Plagiarisme melanggar kode etik dalam karya ilmiah. Untuk itu, adanya aplikasi yang membantu mendeteksi potensi plagiarisme sebuah tulisan sangatlah penting. Paper ini menguraikan hasil implementasi aplikasi berbasis web pendeteksi plagiarisme menggunakan algoritma berbasis himpunan kata dari Küppers. Oleh karena tidak adanya corpus Bahasa Indonesia untuk evaluasi algoritma pendeteksi plagiarisme, pengujian tidak dievaluasi menggunakan penilaian standar, seperti recall, precision, dan granularity. Hasil pengujian ditunjukkan dengan nilai yang menjadi ukuran kemiripan dokumen yang diuji dengan dokumen lain yang ada di basisdata. Multiresolution analysis in statistical mechanics. II. The wavelet transform as a basis for Monte Carlo simulations on lattices
In this paper, we extend our analysis of lattice systems using the wavelet
transform to systems for which exact enumeration is impractical. For such
systems, we illustrate a wavelet-accelerated Monte Carlo (WAMC) algorithm,
which hierarchically coarse-grains a lattice model by computing the probability
distribution for successively larger block spins. We demonstrate that although
the method perturbs the system by changing its Hamiltonian and by allowing
block spins to take on values not permitted for individual spins, the results
obtained agree with the analytical results in the preceding paper, and
``converge'' to exact results obtained in the absence of coarse-graining.
Additionally, we show that the decorrelation time for the WAMC is no worse than
that of Metropolis Monte Carlo (MMC), and that scaling laws can be constructed
from data performed in several short simulations to estimate the results that
would be obtained from the original simulation. Although the algorithm is not
asymptotically faster than traditional MMC, because of its hierarchical design,
the new algorithm executes several orders of magnitude faster than a full
simulation of the original problem. Consequently, the new method allows for
rapid analysis of a phase diagram, allowing computational time to be focused on

A Little Solution to the Little Hierarchy Problem: A Vector-like Generation
We present a simple solution to the little hierarchy problem in the MSSM: a
vector-like fourth generation. With O(1) Yukawa couplings for the new quarks,
the Higgs mass can naturally be above 114 GeV. Unlike a chiral fourth
generation, a vector-like generation can solve the little hierarchy problem
while remaining consistent with precision electroweak and direct production
constraints, and maintaining the success of the grand unified framework. The
new quarks are predicted to lie between ~ 300 - 600 GeV and will thus be
discovered or ruled out at the LHC. This scenario suggests exploration of

pMSSM Benchmark Models for Snowmass 2013
We present several benchmark points in the phenomenological Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model (pMSSM). We select these models as experimentally
well-motivated examples of the MSSM which predict the observed Higgs mass and
dark matter relic density while evading the current LHC searches. We also use
benchmarks to generate spokes in parameter space by scaling the mass parameters
in a manner which keeps the Higgs mass and relic density approximately

The CP-violating pMSSM at the Intensity Frontier
In this Snowmass whitepaper, we describe the impact of ongoing and proposed
intensity frontier experiments on the parameter space of the Minimally
Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We extend a set of phenomenological MSSM
(pMSSM) models to include non-zero CP-violating phases and study the
sensitivity of various flavor observables in these scenarios Future electric
dipole moment and rare meson decay experiments can have a strong impact on the
viability of these models that is relatively independent of the detailed
superpartner spectrum. In particular, we find that these experiments have the
potential to probe models that are expected to escape searches at the

Lycopene content and lipophilic antioxidant capacity of by-products from Psidium guajava fruits produced during puree production industry.
The comparison of lycopene content and lipophilic antioxidant capacity was explored among pink guava fruit and by-products of its puree production industry namely refiner, siever and decanter. Lycopene content was measured using both UV–vis spectrophotometer and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods. Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (APCI-LC–MS) was applied in confirming the studied compound. Two assays were employed to determine the lipophilic antioxidant capacities namely lycopene equivalent antioxidant capacity (LEAC) and β-carotene bleaching assays. Lycopene content and antioxidant capacity were in the order of fruits > decanter > siever > refiner. Decanter exhibited the highest lycopene content and antioxidant among the studied by-products. It also gave a significant higher (p < 0.05) lycopene content than pink guava fruit based on the wet basis. There was a significant correlation between lycopene content and LEAC. All samples had a good antioxidant activity in β-carotene bleaching assay but negatively correlated to lycopene content. Decanter was found to be the highest in lycopene content (17 mg/100 g dry basis) and antioxidant capacity (22 μmol LE/100 g dry basis) among the by-products. This by-product of pink guava puree industry can be a potential source of lycopene and antioxidant compounds
