Achieving Biocompatible SABRE : An in vitro Cytotoxicity Study
Production of a biocompatible hyperpolarized bolus for signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE) could open the door to simple clinical diagnosis via magnetic resonance imaging. Essential to successful progression to preclinical/clinical applications is the determination of the toxicology profile of the SABRE reaction mixture. Herein, we exemplify the cytotoxicity of the SABRE approach using invitro cell assays. We conclude that the main cause of the observed toxicity is due to the SABRE catalyst. We therefore illustrate two catalyst removal methods: one involving deactivation and ion-exchange chromatography, and the second using biphasic catalysis. These routes produce a bolus suitable for future invivo study
New magnetic anomaly map for the Red Sea reveals transtensional structures associated with rotational rifting
The Red Sea is a modern analogue for studying continental break-up. Particularly, the Red Sea shows along-strike variability in the architecture, magmatism and associated style of rifting. In order to study these variabilities, continuous geophysical data that cover the entire length of the basin is desired. Our study aims to produce a continuous, reliable and robust magnetic anomaly map for the Red Sea. We present a new magnetic anomaly map for the Red Sea, derived from re-processing of shipborne data, merged and conformed to a recent satellite model, LCS-1. The new magnetic map reveals prominent patterns of magnetic anomalies in sub-perpendicular directions to the Red Sea, with a northward increase in obliquity. We provide further analysis for the magnetic data and associate sets of magnetic trends with transtensional basement structures. Directional analysis suggests a gradual increase in shear component along the Red Sea. The magnetic trends are coaxial with independent indicators of finite and instantaneous strains, and thus implies that these structures and their variability are related to the kinematic framework of the rift. We discuss the consequences of rifting close to the Euler pole, i.e. rotational rifting, and argue that both passive and active forces can explain an increased along-strike transtension, and accordingly the associated variability along the Red Sea
University Procurement Officers’ Use of Technology When Seeking Information
The transition from printed to electronic sources of information has resulted in a profound change to the way procurement officers seek information. Furthermore, in the past decade there have been additional technological revolutions that are expected to further affect the procurement process. In this paper, we conduct a survey among forty nine university procurement officers in Israel to examine to what extent procurement officers have adapted to smartphones and tablets by testing how frequently officers use notebooks, smartphones, and tablets for work-related and leisure purposes. We find that while officers prefer electronic sources of information over printed sources of information, officers have not yet adapted to the later technological advances (i.e., smartphones and tablets). Notebooks are more frequently used than either smartphones or tablets for work-related and leisure purposes. One explanation behind this result is that officers are not skilled in using smartphone and tablets applications. This implies that training officers in the use of these devices may improve their performance.</jats:p
SITUATIONAL FACTORS: BASES FOR IMPROVING THE ATTITUDE AND MOTIVATION OF ESL LEARNERS’ SPEAKING SKILLS IN THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND LETTERS
This paper highlights the importance of enhancing the speaking skills among ESL freshmen in the College of Arts and Letters of Bulacan State University. The respondents in this study were Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication Major in Broadcasting Sections A to D. Although this course requires oral communication proficiency for global competitiveness, only a few students participate actively in classroom discussions. Many of them lag behind in terms of speaking skills. The ability to speak English has become the norm in the country and around the world. Graduates who possess such a skill can have better opportunities locally or internationally compared with those who cannot speak fluently. Hence, the researchers looked into the role of attitude and motivation in enhancing speaking skills among the respondents in terms of the following: demographics, the attitude of students toward English, situational factors affecting the attitude of students toward English, the motivation of students in learning English, and students’ beliefs about learning English. The research instrument was administered to the respondents via Google Forms. The 32-item questionnaire was designed to determine the attitudes and motivation of ESL students toward learning English. Each of the respondents was scored from 1-5 on a Likert Scale. Through the use of the Pearson Correlation Coefficient, Fisher Z-test, and P-Value in testing the hypotheses, data were analyzed and interpreted. The Likert Scales show the participants had an incredibly positive attitude and behavior toward English in general. Among all motivation items, the top factors affecting students to learn more in English are the Student’s Practical Purpose, Correction of the Teacher during Class, Communication Focused Class Activities, and Positive Atmosphere during class. Based on the findings of the study, language teachers should take advantage of motivation to foster a positive attitude among the students when it comes to speaking skills through the use of authentic materials such as audio, video, printed, and softcopies. Factors such as activities, environment, and teachers’ attitudes should be the point of reference in determining which learning materials work best in enhancing the speaking skills of the students.
