The Study of English Literature
Learning English language and English literature seems to bring about considerable questions of the benefits and the importance of so doing. Why should students who learn English language require learning English literature at the same time? The ultimate matter remains the samewhat is the very core of learning the subject? What do their relationships embrace? What, why, and how are we supposed to know that
Understanding Students' Learning Experiences Through Journalwriting
This paper will make attempts to understand students learning experiences through journal writing. How students feel about the subject including materials, lecturers, learning activities, how they experience the learning processes, and identify their difficulties are several issues that will be discussed. Various significant issues found in students' journals will also be used to analyze and evaluate classroom activities. This study is conducted in a particular context of class room first semester undergraduate students of Accounting Department at the Faculty of Economics Universitas Islam Indonesia. The students are obliged to take Output Character Building Program (CCD) which is aimed to prepare new students to readily involve in academic environment and tasks. Data were collected from eight students' journals from two different classes and teacher's journal. They were required to write daily-basis reflective journal at the end of every meeting which is then analyzed to reveal significant issues addressed by students. The result of the class observation shows that regular journal writing function as a tool of effective communication between students-teachers, a media for students to express their feeling towards learning, promote better teacher-student rapport, and good feedback from students for the betterment of teaching and learning process. At further stages, the findings could be used to evaluate and develop better program
Investigating the Indonesian Translation of the U.S. Embassy Press Release
Translating formal text that may contain social, political, and crucial issues that involve many parties and possibly pose reactions across countries does not seem to be a simple task to complete. Due to diverse reactions of readers from different languages, a translator needs to be very careful to transfer meanings and the emotion within a text. Translation strategies, language use, types of text, genre, discourse and values are urgent issues to reconsider during the translation process. This paper investigates the translation strategies implemented in the Indonesian translation of the U.S. Embassy Press Release in response to Newsweek's Report on Alleged Desecration of the Holy Qur'an from the point of views of text, genre, and discourse as proposed by Hatim and Munday. In addition, several alternative translations are also offered to show different impacts of a translated text. Despite many translation methods that are used in doing the translation process, a text still bear its own genre, discourse and therefore stands in its own identity while at the same time the target text should keep voicing at least similar values and bring about similar impacts on readers
Subjective Well-being Individu Dalam Rumah Tangga Di Indonesia
Well-being is multi-dimensional development goals because well-being can not be seen only from individual income, but also the entire condition such as health and education. Complexities in measuring well-being made economists try to measure the individual well-being with subjective well-being approach. One of subjective well-being\u27s variable is the happiness. This study aims to examine the factors determining the individual happiness in Indonesia. Those factors consist of per capita expenditure, personal assets, and individual characteristics, including yearly working hours, years of schooling, health status, marital status, age, and gender. This study uses logistic and probit regression. Object of this study is the individuals in household based on SUSENAS\u27s representation that was obtained from Indonesia Family Life Survey in 2007. This research found that income is stil being main determinant of individual happiness. Significant results also were found in the variables of schooling, health status, marital status, and u-shaped in age. From these results, increasing income through various sectors of the economy is needed to reach a higher level of well-being. Health and education should also receive support through infrastructure improvements. Thus, there will be more people that are able to improve their well-being
The Importance of Teaching Literature to Students
Literature, in its own self, possesses rich heritage, social, political, philosophical, and economical reflection of an era. It has long been used to depict various circumstances, sound social critiques on a particular condition, reflect characteristics of an age, portray culture of a society, and reveal conspiracy in a country. Literature is widely learned and discussed in schools, yet its benefits and values are often questioned. This paper is aimed to elaborate the idea of the necessity of teaching literature to students and how it can be bought into classrooms
Construction of the Sophia Observation withdrawal Symptoms-scale (SOS) for critically ill children
Objective: To construct a reliable and clinically practical instrument for monitoring opioids and benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms in pediatric ICU patients. Design: Instrument development. Setting: Intensive care unit in an academic children's hospital. Patients and participants: 79 patients up to age 16 years on intravenous midazolam and/or opioids for ≥5 days. An expert panel of 85 physicians and nurses rated clinical relevance of withdrawal symptoms. Intervention: During drug weaning repeated observations were performed with a checklist of 24 withdrawal symptoms described in the literature. Measurements and results: For 76 children, 932 observations were obtained within 24 h after decrease and/or discontinuation of midazolam or opioids. Most frequent symptoms were tachypnea, agitation, motor disturbance, diarrhea, fever, anxiety, sleep disturbance and hypertension (14.6-29.6%). Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was performed to detect the underlying empirical structure of co-occurrences of symptoms. An expert panel judged clinical relevance of each withdrawal symptom on a four-point scale ranging from 'definitively so' to 'definitively not'. Agitation, an

Wheat seed weight and quality differ temporally in sensitivity to warm or cool conditions during seed development and maturation
Background and Aims Short periods of extreme temperature may affect wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seed weight, but also quality. Temporal sensitivity to extreme temperature during seed development and maturation was investigated.
Methods Plants of cv. Tybalt grown at ambient temperature were moved to growth cabinets at 29/20°C or 34/20°C (2010), or 15/10°C or 34/20°C (2011), for successive 7-d periods from 7 DAA (days after anthesis) onwards, and also 7-65 DAA in 2011. Seed samples were harvested serially and moisture content, weight, ability to germinate, subsequent longevity in air-dry storage, and bread-making quality determined.
Key Results High temperature (34/20°C) reduced final seed weight, with greatest temporal sensitivity at 7-14 or 14-21 DAA. Several aspects of bread-making quality were also most sensitive to high temperature then, but whereas protein quality decreased protein and sulphur concentrations improved. Early exposure to high temperature provided earlier development of ability to germinate and tolerate desiccation, but had little effect on maximum germination capacity. All treatments at 15/10°C resulted in ability to germinate declining between 58 and 65 DAA. Early exposure to high temperature hastened improvement in seed storage longevity, but the subsequent decline in late maturation preceded that in the control. Long (7-65 DAA) exposure to 15/10°C disrupted the development of seed longevity, with no improvement after seed filling ended. Longevity improved during maturation drying in other treatments. Early (7-14 DAA) exposure to high reduced and low temperature increased subsequent longevity at harvest maturity, whereas late (35- or 42-49 DAA) exposure to high increased and low temperature reduced it.
Conclusions Temporal sensitivity to extreme temperature was detected. It varied considerably amongst the contrasting seed variables investigated. Subsequent seed longevity at harvest maturity responded negatively to temperature early in development, but positively later in development and throughout maturation
