    Hydatid disease is a severe parasitic disease with a widely ranging distribution. In the human being the liver is the most frequent organ affected. 1 The treatment should be individualized to the morphology, size, number and location of the cysts, that is why a variety of surgical operations have been advocated from complete resection like total pericystectomy or partial hepatectomy to laparoscopy to a minimally invasive procedures like percutaneous aspiration of cysts to conservative drug therapy. 3-4 This study compares laparoscopic versus open management of the hydatid cyst of liver the surgical approach to liver echinococcosis is still a controversial issue and shows our results of surgical treatment of liver hydatid cysts during a 3-years period

    Data analysis with ordinal and interval dependent variables: examples from a study of real estate salespeople

    This paper re-examines the problems of estimating the parameters of an underlying linear model using survey response data in which the dependent variables are in discrete categories of ascending order (ordinal, as distinct from numerical) or, where they are observed to fall into certain groups on a continuous scale (interval), where the actual values remain unobserved. An ordered probit model is discussed as an appropriate framework for statistical analysis for ordinal dependent variables. Next, a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) derived from grouped data regression for interval dependent variable is discussed. Using LIMDEP, a packaged statistical program, survey data from an earlier manuscript are analyzed and the findings presented.

    Scattering from Solutions of Star Polymers

    We calculate the scattering intensity of dilute and semi-dilute solutions of star polymers. The star conformation is described by a model introduced by Daoud and Cotton. In this model, a single star is regarded as a spherical region of a semi-dilute polymer solution with a local, position dependent screening length. For high enough concentrations, the outer sections of the arms overlap and build a semi-dilute solution (a sea of blobs) where the inner parts of the actual stars are embedded. The scattering function is evaluated following a method introduced by Auvray and de Gennes. In the dilute regime there are three regions in the scattering function: the Guinier region (low wave vectors, q R << 1) from where the radius of the star can be extracted; the intermediate region (1 << q R << f^(2/5)) that carries the signature of the form factor of a star with f arms: I(q) ~ q^(-10/3); and a high wavevector zone (q R >> f^(2/5)) where the local swollen structure of the polymers gives rise to the usual q^(-5/3) decay. In the semi-dilute regime the different stars interact strongly, and the scattered intensity acquires two new features: a liquid peak that develops at a reciprocal position corresponding to the star-star distances; and a new large wavevector contribution of the form q^(-5/3) originating from the sea of blobs.Comment: REVTeX, 12 pages, 4 eps figure

    JCV-specific T-cells producing IFN-gamma are differently associated with PmL occurrence in HIV patients and liver transplant recipients

    Aim of this work was to investigate a possible correlation between the frequency of JCV-specific T-cells and PML occurrence in HIV-infected subjects and in liver transplant recipients. A significant decrease of JCV-specific T-cells was observed in HIV-PML subjects, highlighting a close relation between JCV-specific T-cell immune impairment and PML occurrence in HIV-subjects. Interestingly, liver-transplant recipients (LTR) showed a low frequency of JCV-specific T-cells, similar to HIV-PML subjects. Nevertheless, none of the enrolled LTR developed PML, suggesting the existence of different immunological mechanisms involved in the maintenance of a protective immune response in LT

    A white dwarf merger as progenitor of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61?

    It has been recently proposed that massive fast-rotating highly-magnetized white dwarfs could describe the observational properties of some of Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-Ray Pulsars (AXPs). Moreover, it has also been shown that high-field magnetic (HFMWDs) can be the outcome of white dwarf binary mergers. The products of these mergers consist of a hot central white dwarf surrounded by a rapidly rotating disk. Here we show that the merger of a double degenerate system can explain the characteristics of the peculiar AXP 4U 0142+61. This scenario accounts for the observed infrared excess. We also show that the observed properties of 4U 0142+6 are consistent with an approximately 1.2 M_{\sun} white dwarf, remnant of the coalescence of an original system made of two white dwarfs of masses 0.6\, M_{\sun} and 1.0\, M_{\sun}. Finally, we infer a post-merging age τWD64\tau_{\rm WD}\approx 64 kyr, and a magnetic field B2×108B\approx 2\times 10^8 G. Evidence for such a magnetic field may come from the possible detection of the electron cyclotron absorption feature observed between the BB and VV bands at 1015\approx 10^{15} Hz in the spectrum of 4U 0142+61.Comment: to appear in ApJ Letter

    Computing the set of Epsilon-efficient solutions in multiobjective space mission design

    In this work, we consider multiobjective space mission design problems. We will start from the need, from a practical point of view, to consider in addition to the (Pareto) optimal solutions also nearly optimal ones. In fact, extending the set of solutions for a given mission to those nearly optimal significantly increases the number of options for the decision maker and gives a measure of the size of the launch windows corresponding to each optimal solution, i.e., a measure of its robustness. Whereas the possible loss of such approximate solutions compared to optimal—and possibly even ‘better’—ones is dispensable. For this, we will examine several typical problems in space trajectory design—a biimpulsive transfer from the Earth to the asteroid Apophis and two low-thrust multigravity assist transfers—and demonstrate the possible benefit of the novel approach. Further, we will present a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm which is designed for this purpose

    Multi-rendezvous Spacecraft Trajectory Optimization with Beam P-ACO

    The design of spacecraft trajectories for missions visiting multiple celestial bodies is here framed as a multi-objective bilevel optimization problem. A comparative study is performed to assess the performance of different Beam Search algorithms at tackling the combinatorial problem of finding the ideal sequence of bodies. Special focus is placed on the development of a new hybridization between Beam Search and the Population-based Ant Colony Optimization algorithm. An experimental evaluation shows all algorithms achieving exceptional performance on a hard benchmark problem. It is found that a properly tuned deterministic Beam Search always outperforms the remaining variants. Beam P-ACO, however, demonstrates lower parameter sensitivity, while offering superior worst-case performance. Being an anytime algorithm, it is then found to be the preferable choice for certain practical applications.Comment: Code available at https://github.com/lfsimoes/beam_paco__gtoc

    Antispasmodic saponins from bulbs of red onion, Allium cepa L. var. Tropea

    A phytochemical analysis of the polar extract from the red bulbs of Allium cepa L. var. Tropea, typical of Calabria, a southern region of Italy, was performed extensively for the first time, leading to the isolation of four new furostanol saponins, named tropeoside A1/A2 (1a/1b) and tropeoside B1/B2 (3a/3b), along with the respective 22-O-methyl derivatives (2a/2b and 4a/4b), almost certainly extraction artifacts. High concentrations of ascalonicoside A1/A2 (5a/5b) and ascalonicoside B (6), previously isolated from Allium ascalonicum Hort., were also found. This is the first report of furostanol saponins in this A. cepa variety. The chemical structures of the new compounds were established through a combination of extensive nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry and chemical analyses. High concentrations of quercetin, quercetin 4(I)-glucoside, taxifolin, taxifolin 7-glucoside, and phenylalanine were also isolated. The new saponins were found to possess antispasmodic activity in the guinea pig isolated ileum; such an effect might contribute to explaining the traditional use of onion in the treatment of disturbances of the gastrointestinal tract

    GW170817: implications for the local kilonova rate and for surveys from ground-based facilities

    We compute the local rate of events similar to GRB 170817A, which has been recently found to be associated with a kilonova (KN) outburst. Our analysis finds an observed rate of such events of RKN352281+810_{KN}\sim 352^{+810}_{-281} Gpc3^{-3}yr1^{-1}. After comparing at their face values this density of sGRB outbursts with the much higher density of Binary Neutron Star (BNS) mergers of 15401220+3200^{+3200}_{-1220} Gpc3^{-3}yr1^{-1}, estimated by LIGO-Virgo collaboration, one can conclude, admittedly with large uncertainty that either only a minor fraction of BNS mergers produces sGRB/KN events or the sGRBs associated with BNS mergers are beamed and observable under viewing angles as large as θ\theta \leq 4040^{\circ}. Finally we provide preliminary estimates of the number of sGRB/KN events detected by future surveys carried out with present/future ground-based/space facilities, such as LSST, VST, ZTF, SKA and THESEUS.Comment: MNRAS accepted, 6 pages, 1 figur
