The Enhanced Reading Opportunities Study: Findings from the Second Year of Implementation
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, a majority of ninth-graders in low-performing high schools begin their freshman year with significant reading difficulties. Poor reading ability is a key predictor of academic disengagement and, ultimately, dropping out. This report presents findings from the second year of the Enhanced Reading Opportunities (ERO) study, a demonstration and random assignment evaluation of two supplemental literacy programs -- Reading Apprenticeship Academic Literacy and Xtreme Reading -- that aim to improve the reading comprehension skills and school performance of struggling ninth-grade readers
Coordinated regulation of chromatophore differentiation and melanogenesis during the ontogeny of skin pigmentation of Solea senegalensis (Kaup, 1858)
Abnormal pigmentation of Senegalese sole has been described as one problem facing the full exploitation of its commercial production. To improve our understanding of flatfish pigmentation of this commercially important species we have evaluated eleven genes related to two different processes of pigmentation: melanophore differentiation, and melanin production. The temporal distribution of gene expression peaks corresponds well with changes in pigmentation patterns and the intensity of skin melanization. Several gene ratios were also examined to put in perspective possible genetic markers for the different stages of normal pigmentation development. Further, the phenotypic changes that occur during morphogenesis correspond well with the main transitions in gene expression that occur. Given the dramatic phenotypic alterations which flatfish undergo, including the asymmetric coloration that occurs between the ocular and the blind side, and the synchrony of the two processes of morphogenesis and pigmentation ontogenesis, these species constitute an interesting model for the study of pigmentation. Relationships among Members of the Genus Myxobolus (Myxozoa: Bilvalvidae) Based on Small Subunit Ribosomal DNA Sequences
Sequences representing similar to 1,700 base pairs of the 18S rRNA gene from 10 different species in the genus Myxobulus were found to group them into 3 clusters that showed little correlation with spore morphology and size or host specificity, criteria currently used for both higher and lower taxonomic placements in the Myxozoa. Of the phenotypic criteria examined, tissue tropism was most correlated with the rRNA groupings observed. Spores of similar size and shape (Myxobolus cerebralis vs. Myxobolus squamalis) were distantly related in some instances, whereas spores with divergent morphology and size were some times found to be closely related (M. cerebralis and Myxobolus insidiosus). These initial investigations into the phylogenetic relationships of putative members of the genus Myxobolus clearly indicate the potential limitations of groupings based on size and morphological properties of the spores and host species infected. We propose that 18S rRNA gene sequences, combined with information on tissue tropism, host species infected, and developmental cycles in the fish and alternate host (when and if known) be given greater consideration in taxonomic placements of myxosporeans
Optimization of an Alkylpolyglucoside-Based Dishwashing Detergent Formulation.
The aim of this work was to formulate and optimize the washing performance of an alkylpolyglucoside-based dishwashing detergent. The liquid detergent was formulated with five ingredients of commercial origin: anionic (linear sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate and sodium laurylethersulfate), nonionic (C12–C14 alkylpolyglucoside) and zwitterionic (a fatty acid amide derivative with a betaine structure) surfactants, and NaCl for viscosity control. In addition to the plate test, other properties were investigated including ‘‘cloud point’’, viscosity, and emulsion stability. Statistical analysis software was used to generate a central composite experimental design. Then, a second order design and analysis of experiments approach, known as the Response Surface Methodology, was set up to investigate the effects of the five components of the formulation on the studied properties in the region covering plausible component ranges. The method proved to be efficient for locating the domains of concentrations where the desired properties were met
A note on perturbation series in supersymmetric gauge theories
Exact results in supersymmetric Chern-Simons and N=2 Yang-Mills theories can
be used to examine the quantum behavior of observables and the structure of the
perturbative series. For the U(2) x U(2) ABJM model, we determine the
asymptotic behavior of the perturbative series for the partition function and
write it as a Borel transform. Similar results are obtained for N=2 SU(2) super
Yang-Mills theory with four fundamental flavors and in N=2* super Yang-Mills
theory, for the partition function as well as for the expectation values for
Wilson loop and 't Hooft loop operators (in the 0 and 1 instanton sectors). In
all examples, one has an alternate perturbation series where the coefficient of
the nth term increases as n!, and the perturbation series are Borel summable.
We also calculate the expectation value for a Wilson loop operator in the N=2*
SU(N) theory at large N in different regimes of the 't Hooft gauge coupling and
mass parameter. For large masses, the calculation reproduces the running gauge

Wilson Loops in N=2 Super-Yang-Mills from Matrix Model
We compute the expectation value of the circular Wilson loop in N=2
supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with N_f=2N hypermultiplets. Our results
indicate that the string tension in the dual string theory scales as the

Regularly arranged indium islands on glass/molybdenum substrates upon femtosecond laser and physical vapor deposition processing
A bottom-up approach is presented for the production of arrays of indium
islands on a molybdenum layer on glass, which can serve as micro-sized
precursors for indium compounds such as copper-indium-gallium-diselenide used
in photovoltaics. Femtosecond laser ablation of glass and a subsequent
deposition of a molybdenumfilm or direct laser processing of the
molybdenumfilm both allow the preferential nucleation and growth of indium
islands at the predefined locations in a following indium-based physical vapor
deposition(PVD) process. A proper choice of laser and deposition parameters
ensures the controlled growth of indium islands exclusively at the laser
ablated spots. Based on a statistical analysis, these results are compared to
the non-structured molybdenumsurface, leading to randomly grown indium islands
after PVD
Headache yesterday in Europe
BACKGROUND: Surveys enquiring about burden of headache over a prior period of time (eg, 3 months) are subject to recall bias. To eliminate this as far as possible, we focused on presence and impact of headache on the preceding day (“headache yesterday”). METHODS: Adults (18-65 years) were surveyed from the general populations of Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, from a work-force population in Spain and from mostly non-headache patient populations of Austria, France and UK. A study of non-responders in some countries allowed detection of potential participation bias where initial participation rates were low. RESULTS: Participation rates varied between 11% and 59% (mean 27%). Non-responder studies suggested that, because of participation bias, headache prevalence might be overestimated in initial responders by up to 2% (absolute). Across all countries, 1,422 of 8,271 participants (15-17%, depending on correction for participation bias) had headache yesterday lasting on average for 6 hours. It was bad or very bad in 56% of cases and caused absence from work or school in 6%. Among those who worked despite headache, 20% reported productivity reduced by >50%. Social activities were lost by 24%. Women (21%) were more likely than men (12%) to have headache yesterday, but impact was similar in the two genders. CONCLUSIONS: With recall biases avoided, our findings indicate that headache costs at least 0.7% of working capacity in Europe. This calculation takes into account that most of those who missed work could make up for this later, which, however, means that leisure and social activities are even more influenced by headache
Local growth of CuInSe2 micro solar cells for concentrator application
A procedure to fabricate CuInSe2 CISe micro absorbers and solar cells for concentrator applications is presented. The micro absorbers are developed from indium precursor islands, which are deposited on a molybdenum coated glass substrate back contact , followed by deposition of copper on top and subsequent selenization as well as selective etching of copper selenides. In order to compare the properties of the locally grown absorbers to those of conventional large area CISe films, we systematically examine the compositional and morphological homogeneity of the micro absorbers and carry out photoluminescence measurements. Preliminary devices for micro concentrator solar cell applications are fabricated by optimizing the copper to indium ratio and the size of the indium precursor islands.
