Thin film dielectric microstrip kinetic inductance detectors
Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors, or MKIDs, are a type of low
temperature detector that exhibit intrinsic frequency domain multiplexing at
microwave frequencies. We present the first theory and measurements on a MKID
based on a microstrip transmission line resonator. A complete characterization
of the dielectric loss and noise properties of these resonators is performed,
and agrees well with the derived theory. A competitive noise equivalent power
of 5 W Hz at 1 Hz has been demonstrated. The
resonators exhibit the highest quality factors known in a microstrip resonator

Reduction of Ion Heating During Magnetic Reconnection by Large-Scale Effective Potentials
The physical processes that control the partition of released magnetic energy
between electrons and ions during reconnection is explored through
particle-in-cell simulations and analytical techniques. We demonstrate that the
development of a large-scale parallel electric field and its associated
potential controls the relative heating of electrons and ions. The potential
develops to restrain heated exhaust electrons and enhances their heating by
confining electrons in the region where magnetic energy is released.
Simultaneously the potential slows ions entering the exhaust below the
Alfv\'enic speed expected from the traditional counterstreaming picture of ion
heating. Unexpectedly, the magnitude of the potential and therefore the
relative partition of energy between electrons and ions is not a constant but
rather depends on the upstream parameters and specifically the upstream
electron normalized temperature (electron beta). These findings suggest that
the fraction of magnetic energy converted into the total thermal energy may be
independent of upstream parameters
A study of blood contamination of Siqveland matrix bands
AIMS To use a sensitive forensic test to measure blood contamination of used Siqveland matrix bands following routine cleaning and sterilisation procedures in general dental practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen general dental practices in the West of Scotland participated. Details of instrument cleaning procedures were recorded for each practice. A total of 133 Siqveland matrix bands were recovered following cleaning and sterilisation and were examined for residual blood contamination by the Kastle-Meyer test, a well-recognised forensic technique. RESULTS: Ultrasonic baths were used for the cleaning of 62 (47%) bands and retainers and the remainder (53%) were hand scrubbed prior to autoclaving. Overall, 21% of the matrix bands and 19% of the retainers gave a positive Kastle-Meyer test, indicative of residual blood contamination, following cleaning and sterilisation. In relation to cleaning method, 34% of hand-scrubbed bands and 32% of hand-scrubbed retainers were positive for residual blood by the Kastle-Meyer test compared with 6% and 3% respectively of ultrasonically cleaned bands and retainers (P less than 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: If Siqveland matrix bands are re-processed in the assembled state, then adequate pre-sterilisation cleaning cannot be achieved reliably. Ultrasonic baths are significantly more effective than hand cleaning for these items of equipment
Kif15 functions as an active mechanical ratchet
Kif15 is a kinesin-12 that contributes critically to bipolar spindle assembly in humans. Here we use force-ramp experiments in an optical trap to probe the mechanics of single Kif15 molecules under hindering or assisting loads and in a variety of nucleotide states. Whilst unloaded Kif15 is established to be highly processive, we find that under hindering loads, Kif15 takes <∼10 steps. As hindering load is increased, Kif15 forestep:backstep ratio decreases exponentially, with stall occurring at 6 pN. By contrast, under assisting loads, Kif15 detaches readily and rapidly, even from its AMPPNP state. Kif15 mechanics thus depend markedly on the loading direction. Kif15 interacts with a binding partner, Tpx2, and we show that Tpx2 locks Kif15 to microtubules under both hindering and assisting loads. Overall, our data predict that Kif15 in the central spindle will act as a mechanical ratchet, supporting spindle extension but resisting spindle compression
'This is what democracy looks like' : New Labour's blind spot and peripheral vision
New Labour in government since 1997 has been roundly criticized for not possessing a clear, coherent and consistent democratic vision. The absence of such a grand vision has resulted, from this critical perspective, in an absence of 'joined-up' thinking about democracy in an evolving multi-level state. Tensions have been all too apparent between the government's desire to exert central direction - manifested in its most pathological form as 'control freakery' - and its democratising initiatives derived from 'third-way' obsessions with 'decentralising', 'empowering' and 'enabling'. The purpose of this article is to examine why New Labour displayed such apparently impaired democratic vision and why it appeared incapable of conceiving of democratic reform 'in the round'. This article seeks to explain these apparent paradoxes, however, through utilising the notion of 'macular degeneration'. In this analysis, the perceived democratic blind spot of New Labour at Westminster is connected to a democratic peripheral vision, which has envisaged innovative participatory and decentred initiatives in governance beyond Westminster
Treatment recommendations for psoriatic arthritis
Objective: To develop comprehensive recommendations for the treatment of the various clinical manifestations of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) based on evidence obtained from a systematic review of the literature and from consensus opinion. Methods: Formal literature reviews of treatment for the most significant discrete clinical manifestations of PsA (skin and nails, peripheral arthritis, axial disease, dactylitis and enthesitis) were performed and published by members of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA). Treatment recommendations were drafted for each of the clinical manifestations by rheumatologists, dermatologists and PsA patients based on the literature reviews and consensus opinion. The level of agreement for the individual treatment recommendations among GRAPPA members was assessed with an online questionnaire. Results: Treatment recommendations were developed for peripheral arthritis, axial disease, psoriasis, nail disease, dactylitis and enthesitis in the setting of PsA. In rotal, 19 recommendations were drafted, and over 80% agreement was obtained on 16 of them. In addition, a grid that factors disease severity into each of the different disease manifestations was developed to help the clinician with treatment decisions for the individual patient from an evidenced-based perspective. Conclusions: Treatment recommendations for the cardinal physical manifestations of PsA were developed based on a literature review and consensus between rheumatologists and dermatologists. In addition, a grid was established to assist in therapeutic reasoning and decision making for individual patients. It is anticipated that periodic updates will take place using this framework as new data become available
Minkowski superspaces and superstrings as almost real-complex supermanifolds
In 1996/7, J. Bernstein observed that smooth or analytic supermanifolds that
mathematicians study are real or (almost) complex ones, while Minkowski
superspaces are completely different objects. They are what we call almost
real-complex supermanifolds, i.e., real supermanifolds with a non-integrable
distribution, the collection of subspaces of the tangent space, and in every
subspace a complex structure is given.
An almost complex structure on a real supermanifold can be given by an even
or odd operator; it is complex (without "always") if the suitable superization
of the Nijenhuis tensor vanishes. On almost real-complex supermanifolds, we
define the circumcised analog of the Nijenhuis tensor. We compute it for the
Minkowski superspaces and superstrings. The space of values of the circumcised
Nijenhuis tensor splits into (indecomposable, generally) components whose
irreducible constituents are similar to those of Riemann or Penrose tensors.
The Nijenhuis tensor vanishes identically only on superstrings of
superdimension 1|1 and, besides, the superstring is endowed with a contact
structure. We also prove that all real forms of complex Grassmann algebras are

Fast graph operations in quantum computation
The connection between certain entangled states and graphs has been heavily studied in the context of measurement-based quantum computation as a tool for understanding entanglement. Here we show that this correspondence can be harnessed in the reverse direction to yield a graph data structure, which allows for more efficient manipulation and comparison of graphs than any possible classical structure. We introduce efficient algorithms for many transformation and comparison operations on graphs represented as graph states, and prove that no classical data structure can have similar performance for the full set of operations studied
Gravitational wave detection using pulsars: status of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array project
The first direct detection of gravitational waves may be made through
observations of pulsars. The principal aim of pulsar timing array projects
being carried out worldwide is to detect ultra-low frequency gravitational
waves (f ~ 10^-9 to 10^-8 Hz). Such waves are expected to be caused by
coalescing supermassive binary black holes in the cores of merged galaxies. It
is also possible that a detectable signal could have been produced in the
inflationary era or by cosmic strings. In this paper we review the current
status of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array project (the only such project in the
Southern hemisphere) and compare the pulsar timing technique with other forms
of gravitational-wave detection such as ground- and space-based interferometer
