A Simple Bargaining Mechanism That Elicits Truthful Reservation Prices
We describe a simple 2-stage mechanism that induces two bargainers to be truthful in reporting their reservation prices in a 1st stage. If these prices criss-cross, the referee reports that they overlap, and the bargainers proceed to make offers in a 2nd stage. The average of the 2nd-stage offers becomes the settlement if both offers fall into the overlap interval; if only one offer falls into this interval, it is the settlement, but is implemented with probability 1/2; if neither offer falls into the interval, there is no settlement. Thus, if the bargainers reach the 2nd stage, they know their reservation prices overlap even if they fail to reach a settlement, possibly motivating them to try again.Bargaining; truth-telling mechanisms; probabilistic implementation
The South Dakota cooperative land use effort: A state level remote sensing demonstration project
Remote sensing technology can satisfy or make significant contributions toward satisfying many of the information needs of governmental natural resource planners and policy makers. Recognizing this potential, the South Dakota State Planning Bureau and the EROS Data Center together formulated the framework for an ongoing Land Use and Natural Resource Inventory and Information System Program. Statewide land use/land cover information is generated from LANDSAT digital data and high altitude photography. Many applications of the system are anticipated as it evolves and data are added from more conventional sources. The conceptualization, design, and implementation of the program are discussed
Brownian dynamics simulations of planar mixed flows of polymer solutions at finite concentrations
Periodic boundary conditions for planar mixed flows are implemented in the
context of a multi-chain Brownian dynamics simulation algorithm. The effect of
shear rate , and extension rate , on the size of
polymer chains, \left, and on the polymer contribution to
viscosity, , is examined for solutions of FENE dumbbells at finite
concentrations, with excluded volume interactions between the beads taken into
account. The influence of the mixedness parameter, , and flow strength,
, on \left and , is also examined, where

Relativistic Jets and Long-Duration Gamma-ray Bursts from the Birth of Magnetars
We present time-dependent axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the
interaction of a relativistic magnetized wind produced by a proto-magnetar with
a surrounding stellar envelope, in the first seconds after core
collapse. We inject a super-magnetosonic wind with ergs
s into a cavity created by an outgoing supernova shock. A strong
toroidal magnetic field builds up in the bubble of plasma and magnetic field
that is at first inertially confined by the progenitor star. This drives a jet
out along the polar axis of the star, even though the star and the magnetar
wind are each spherically symmetric. The jet has the properties needed to
produce a long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB). At s after core bounce,
the jet has escaped the host star and the Lorentz factor of the material in the
jet at large radii cm is similar to that in the magnetar wind
near the source. Most of the spindown power of the central magnetar escapes via
the relativistic jet. There are fluctuations in the Lorentz factor and energy
flux in the jet on second timescale. These may contribute to

Seam tracking performance of a Coaxial Weld Vision System and pulsed welding
This report describes a continuation of a series of tests on the Coaxial Weld Vision System at MSFC. The ability of the system to compensate for transients associated with pulsed current welding is analyzed. Using the standard image processing approach for root pass seam tracking, the system is also tested for the ability to track the toe of a previous weld bead, for tracking multiple pass weld joints. This Coaxial Weld Vision System was developed by the Ohio State University (OSU) Center for Welding Research and is a part of the Space Shuttle Main Engine Robotic Welding Development System at MSFC
The detection of tightly closed flaws by nondestructive testing (NDT) methods
Liquid penetrant, ultrasonic, eddy current and X-radiographic techniques were optimized and applied to the evaluation of 2219-T87 aluminum alloy test specimens in integrally stiffened panel, and weld panel configurations. Fatigue cracks in integrally stiffened panels, lack-of-fusion in weld panels, and fatigue cracks in weld panels were the flaw types used for evaluation. A 2319 aluminum alloy weld filler rod was used for all welding to produce the test specimens. Forty seven integrally stiffened panels containing a total of 146 fatigue cracks, ninety three lack-of-penetration (LOP) specimens containing a total of 239 LOP flaws, and one-hundred seventeen welded specimens containing a total of 293 fatigue cracks were evaluated. Nondestructive test detection reliability enhancement was evaluated during separate inspection sequences in the specimens in the 'as-machined or as-welded', post etched and post proof loaded conditions. Results of the nondestructive test evaluations were compared to the actual flaw size obtained by measurement of the fracture specimens after completing all inspection sequences. Inspection data were then analyzed to provide a statistical basis for determining the flaw detection reliability
