Anomaly-Induced Magnetic Screening in 2+1 dimensional QED at Finite Density

    Get PDF
We show that in 2+1 dimensional Quantum Electrodynamics an external magnetic field applied to a finite density of massless fermions is screened, due to a 2+12+1-dimensional realization of the underlying 22-dimensional axial anomaly of the space components of the electric current. This is shown to imply screening of the magnetic field, i.e., the Meissner effect. We discuss the physical implications of this result.Comment: 8 pages, DFTT-93-10 [ Eq.(15) and (16) were scrambled in previous version

Criteria for Bayesian model choice with application to variable selection

    Get PDF
In objective Bayesian model selection, no single criterion has emerged as dominant in defining objective prior distributions. Indeed, many criteria have been separately proposed and utilized to propose differing prior choices. We first formalize the most general and compelling of the various criteria that have been suggested, together with a new criterion. We then illustrate the potential of these criteria in determining objective model selection priors by considering their application to the problem of variable selection in normal linear models. This results in a new model selection objective prior with a number of compelling properties.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/12-AOS1013 the Annals of Statistics (http://www.imstat.org/aos/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org

Ultrashort Lifetime Expansion for Indirect Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

    Get PDF
In indirect resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) an intermediate state is created with a core-hole that has a ultrashort lifetime. The core-hole potential therefore acts as a femtosecond pulse on the valence electrons. We show that this fact can be exploited to integrate out the intermediate states from the expressions for the scattering cross section. By this we obtain an effective scattering cross section that only contains the initial and final scattering states. We derive in detail the effective cross section which turns out to be a resonant scattering factor times a linear combination of the charge response function S(q,ω)S({\bf q},\omega) and the dynamic longitudinal spin density correlation function. This result is asymptotically exact for both strong and weak local core-hole potentials and ultrashort lifetimes. The resonant scattering pre-factor is shown to be weakly temperature dependent. We also derive a sum-rule for the total scattering intensity and generalize the results to multi-band systems. One of the remarkable outcomes is that one can change the relative charge and spin contribution to the inelastic spectral weight by varying the incident photon energy.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures embedde

    DEBT REFINANCING AND CREDIT RISK

    Get PDF
Many firms choose to refinance their debt. We investigate the long run effects of this extended practice on credit ratings and credit spreads. We find that debt refinancing generates systematic rating downgrades unless a minimum firm value growth is observed. Deviations from this growth path imply asymmetric results: A lower value growth generates downgrades and a higher value growth upgrades as expected. However, downgrades will tend to be higher in absolute terms. On the other hand, credit spreads will be independent of the risk free interest rate in the short run, but positively correlated with this rate in the long run.

Standard and Non-standard Extensions of Lie algebras

We study the problem of quadruple extensions of simple Lie algebras. We find that, adding a new simple root α+4\alpha_{+4}, it is not possible to have an extended Kac-Moody algebra described by a Dynkin-Kac diagram with simple links and no loops between the dots, while it is possible if α+4\alpha_{+4} is a Borcherds imaginary simple root. We also comment on the root lattices of these new algebras. The folding procedure is applied to the simply-laced triple extended Lie algebras, obtaining all the non-simply laced ones. Non- standard extension procedures for a class of Lie algebras are proposed. It is shown that the 2-extensions of E8E_{8}, with a dot simply linked to the Dynkin-Kac diagram of E9E_{9}, are rank 10 subalgebras of E10E_{10}. Finally the simple root systems of a set of rank 11 subalgebras of E11E_{11}, containing as sub-algebra E10E_{10}, are explicitly written.Comment: Revised version. Inaccurate statements corrected. The sigma term and the quark number operator in QCD

We discuss the relationship of the forward matrix element of the operator ψˉψ\bar\psi\psi, related to the so-called sigma term, to the quark number. We show that in the naive quark model in the canonical formalism these quantities coincide in the limit of small average quark momenta. In the QCD parton model defined through light-front quantization this result is preserved at leading perturbative order but it receives radiative corrections. We analyze the theoretical and phenomenological consequences of this result, which provides a bridge between a current algebra quantity, the sigma term, and a deep-inelastic quantity, the parton number.Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure, DFTT-92-6 (April 1993

Field-induced Orbital Patterns in Ferromagnetic Layered Ruthenates

We study the evolution of orbital patterns in ferromagnetic layered ruthenates due to the competition of Coulomb interactions, compressive c axis and orthorhombic distortions in the presence of a polarizing orbital field coupled to the angular momentum. By means of the exact diagonalization on a 2x2 cluster and a cluster embedded analysis where inter-plaquette interaction is treated on mean field level, we determine the ground-state phase diagram. Specifically, we demonstrate that, via the activation of two or three of t_2g local orbital configurations, an external field applied along different symmetry directions can lead to inequivalent orbital correlated states. Starting from an antiferro-orbital pattern, for the easy axis case an orbital ordered phase is induced, having strong next nearest neighbors ferro-orbital correlations. Otherwise, a field applied along the hard axis leads a reduction of local orbital moment in a way to suppress the orbital order.Comment: 11 page
