High-concentration Er:YAG single-crystal fibers grown by laser-heated pedestal growth technique

    Get PDF
High-concentration Er:YAG single-crystal fibers have been grown using the laser-heated pedestal growth technique. Instability in the melt and concomitant opacity of fibers were observed at source concentrations higher than 15 mol.%. Spectroscopic examination shows that broadening of the linewidth of the I13/24→I15/24 transition is strongly dependent on Er3+ concentration

Precision planar drift chambers and cradle for the TWIST muon decay spectrometer

To measure the muon decay parameters with high accuracy, we require an array of precision drift detector layers whose relative position is known with very high accuracy. This article describes the design, construction and performance of these detectors in the TWIST (TRIUMF Weak Interaction Symmetry Test) spectrometer.Comment: 44 pages, 16 Postscript figures, LaTeX2e, uses Elsevier class elsart.cls, package graphicx, submitted to Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Researc

Measurement of the 7Be(p, γ)8B reaction cross section at low energies

    Get PDF
The absolute total cross section for the reaction 7Be(p, γ)8B has been measured for Ec.m.=117-1230 keV by detecting the delayed α particles following the 8B β decay. Two independent methods have been used to determine the areal density of the 7Be target. The inferred zero-energy S factor from the present experiment is S17(0)=0.0216±0.0025 keV b. This value reduces the predicted 37Cl solar-neutrino capture rate by ∼25%

Absolute cross section for 7Li(d,p)8Li and solar neutrino capture rates

    Get PDF
The absolute total cross section for the 7Li(d,p)8Li reaction has been measured between 0.60 and 1.2 MeV by counting the beta-delayed alpha particles from 8Be*. The cross section at the peak of the 0.77-MeV resonance was measured to be 148±12 mb in good agreement with the new measurement of Elwyn et al. but disagreeing with several previous experiments. The effects of changes in this cross section on the calculation of solar neutrino captures rates is discussed

Proton capture cross section of 7Be and the flux of high energy solar neutrinos

    Get PDF
The low energy cross section for the 7Be(p, γ)8B reaction has been measured by detecting the delayed α particles from the 8B beta decay. Detailed discussion is presented of the analysis of the radioactive 7Be target including the use of two independent methods to determine the 7Be areal density. The direct capture part of the cross section is subtracted from the total cross section to deduce resonance parameters for the 1+ first excited state in 8B. The zero-energy astrophysical S factor inferred from the present experiment is compared with previous values. The effect on the 37Cl solar neutrino capture rate, predicted by the standard solar model, is also discussed

    Does the Sigma(1580)3/2- resonance exist?

Precise new data for the reaction Kpπ0ΛK^- p \to \pi^0 \Lambda are presented in the c.m. energy range 1565 to 1600 MeV. Our analysis of these data sheds new light on claims for the Σ(1580)3/2\Sigma(1580){3/2}^- resonance, which (if it exists with the specified quantum numbers) must be an exotic baryon because of its very low mass. Our results show no evidence for this state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Measurement of Inverse Pion Photoproduction at Energies Spanning the N(1440) Resonance

Differential cross sections for the process pi^- p -> gamma n have been measured at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Alternating Gradient Synchrotron with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer. Measurements were made at 18 pion momenta from 238 to 748 MeV/c, corresponding to E_gamma for the inverse reaction from 285 to 769 MeV. The data have been used to evaluate the gamma n multipoles in the vicinity of the N(1440) resonance. We compare our data and multipoles to previous determinations. A new three-parameter SAID fit yields 36 +/- 7 (GeV)^-1/2 X 10^-3 for the A^n_1/2 amplitude of the P_11.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PR

Measurement of Angular Distributions of Drell-Yan Dimuons in p+pp + p Interactions at 800 GeV/c

We report a measurement of the angular distributions of Drell-Yan dimuons produced using an 800 GeV/c proton beam on a hydrogen target. The polar and azimuthal angular distribution parameters have been extracted over the kinematic range 4.5<mμμ<154.5 < m_{\mu \mu} < 15 GeV/c2^2 (excluding the Υ\Upsilon resonance region), 0<pT<40 < p_T < 4 GeV/c, and 0<xF<0.80 < x_F < 0.8. The p+pp+p angular distributions are similar to those of p+dp+d, and both data sets are compared with models which attribute the cos2ϕ\cos 2 \phi distribution either to the presence of the transverse-momentum-dependent Boer-Mulders structure function h1h_1^\perp or to QCD effects. The data indicate the presence of both mechanisms. The validity of the Lam-Tung relation in p+pp+p Drell-Yan is also tested.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
