    Comparative studies on the structure of an upland African stream ecosystem

    Upland stream systems have been extensively investigated in Europe, North America and Australasia and many of the central ideas concerning their function are based on these systems. One central paradigm, the river continuum concept is ultimately derived from those North American streams whose catchments remain forested with native vegetation. Streams of the tropics may or may not fit the model. They have been little studied. The Amani Nature Reserve in the East Usambara Mountains of north-eastern Tanzania offers an opportunity to bring these naturally forested systems to the attention of the ecological community. This article describes a comparison made between two lengths of the River Dodwe in this area. The work was carried out by a group of postgraduate students from eighteen European and African countries with advice from five staff members, as part of a course organised by the Tropical Biology Association. Rigorous efforts were made to standardise techniques, in a situation where equipment and laboratory facilities were very basic, through a management structure and deliberate allocation of work to specialists in each area.The article offers a summary of invertebrate communities found in the stream and its biomass. Crabs seem to be the key organism in both sections of the streams

    Ambient noise crustal imaging of a heterogeneous rift linkage zone: Turkana Depression, East Africa

    SUMMARY: The role of pre-existing lithospheric heterogeneities in rifting processes remains unclear. The Eastern and Main Ethiopian rifts lie within the same geodynamic province and are kinematically connected through the Turkana Depression, but they transect heterogeneous lithosphere: Pan-African accreted terranes, failed Mesozoic-Paleogene rift systems, zones of Eocene–Oligocene flood magmatism. Rifting in these pre-extension heterogeneities offers the opportunity to evaluate their relative importance in Oligo-Miocene to Recent stretching and magmatism. We use 3-D Rayleigh shear-wave speed (Vs) models inverted from ambient noise signals recorded on a temporary seismic network to image heterogeneities in lithospheric structure, and to evaluate their influence on syn-rift faulting and magmatism. Crustal feeder zones for Eocene–Oligocene flood magmatism in southwestern Ethiopia are marked by ≤50 km-wide, 10–15 km-thick mid-lower crustal fast wave speed (Vs ≥ 3.8 km s−1) anomalies that are localized rather than widespread. Evidence for active magma intrusions only occurs beneath aligned chains of Quaternary eruptive centres in Lake Turkana and ≤1 Ma shield volcanoes east of the Turkana rift having localized low Vs (≤3.4 km s−1) at 0–20 km depth. Evidence for widespread lower crustal intrusions, however, is lacking. Pan-African oceanic accreted terranes in southern Ethiopia have high Vs anomalies of 3.6 km s−1 throughout the crust and overlay previously imaged high-wave speed lithospheric mantle that has been interpreted as cold and strong Proterozoic accreted terrane. The integrated strength of this lithospheric-scale pre-existing mechanical heterogeneity resisted Oligocene–Miocene stretching and subsequently contributed to the unusual breadth of this East African rift sector lying north of the Turkana Depression

    The AFHSC-Division of GEIS Operations Predictive Surveillance Program: a multidisciplinary approach for the early detection and response to disease outbreaks

    The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, Division of Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System Operations (AFHSC-GEIS) initiated a coordinated, multidisciplinary program to link data sets and information derived from eco-climatic remote sensing activities, ecologic niche modeling, arthropod vector, animal disease-host/reservoir, and human disease surveillance for febrile illnesses, into a predictive surveillance program that generates advisories and alerts on emerging infectious disease outbreaks. The program’s ultimate goal is pro-active public health practice through pre-event preparedness, prevention and control, and response decision-making and prioritization. This multidisciplinary program is rooted in over 10 years experience in predictive surveillance for Rift Valley fever outbreaks in Eastern Africa. The AFHSC-GEIS Rift Valley fever project is based on the identification and use of disease-emergence critical detection points as reliable signals for increased outbreak risk. The AFHSC-GEIS predictive surveillance program has formalized the Rift Valley fever project into a structured template for extending predictive surveillance capability to other Department of Defense (DoD)-priority vector- and water-borne, and zoonotic diseases and geographic areas. These include leishmaniasis, malaria, and Crimea-Congo and other viral hemorrhagic fevers in Central Asia and Africa, dengue fever in Asia and the Americas, Japanese encephalitis (JE) and chikungunya fever in Asia, and rickettsial and other tick-borne infections in the U.S., Africa and Asia

    Seroprevalence and distribution of arboviral infections among rural Kenyan adults: A cross-sectional study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Arthorpod-borne viruses (arboviruses) cause wide-spread morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa, but little research has documented the burden and distribution of these pathogens.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using a population-based, cross-sectional study design, we administered a detailed questionnaire and used ELISA to test the blood of 1,141 healthy Kenyan adults from three districts for the presence of anti-viral Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to the following viruses: dengue (DENV), West Nile (WNV), yellow fever (YFV), Chikungunya (CHIKV), and Rift Valley fever (RVFV).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of these, 14.4% were positive for DENV, 9.5% were WNV positive, 9.2% were YFV positive, 34.0% were positive for CHIKV and 0.7% were RVFV positive. In total, 46.6% had antibodies to at least one of these arboviruses.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>For all arboviruses, district of residence was strongly associated with seropositivity. Seroprevalence to YFV, DENV and WNV increased with age, while there was no correlation between age and seropositivity for CHIKV, suggesting that much of the seropositivity to CHIKV is due to sporadic epidemics. Paradoxically, literacy was associated with increased seropositivity of CHIKV and DENV.</p

    The Role of Mobile Phones in Governance-Driven Technology Exports in Sub-Saharan Africa

    This study assesses how the mobile phone influences governance to improve information and communication technology (ICT) exports in Sub-Saharan Africa with data from 2000-2012. The empirical evidence is based on Generalised Method of Moments and three main governance concepts are used, namely: (i) institutional (comprising the rule of law and corruption-control); (ii) political (involving political stability/no violence and voice & accountability) and (iii) economic (including regulation quality and government effectiveness) governance. The following findings are established. First, there are positive net effects on ICT goods exports from independent interactions between mobile phones and ‘political stability’ ‘voice and accountability’ and corruption-control. Second, significant net effects are not apparent from independent interactions between mobile phones and government effectiveness, regulation quality and the rule of law. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed

    Foreign Direct Investment, Aid and Terrorism: Empirical Insight Conditioned on Corruption Control

    This study checks the effect of foreign aid on terrorism and FDI, conditioned on domestic levels of corruption-control (CC). The empirical evidence is based on a sample of 78 countries for the period 1984-2008. The following findings are established: the negative effect of terrorism on FDI is apparent only in higher levels of CC; foreign aid dampens the negative effect of terrorism on FDI only in higher levels of CC; when foreign aid is subdivided into its bilateral and multilateral components, the result is mixed. While our findings are in accordance with the stance that bilateral aid is effective in reducing the adverse impact of transnational terrorism, the position that only multilateral aid is effective at mitigating the adverse impact of domestic terrorism on FDI is not confirmed because multilateral aid also curbs the adverse effect of transnational terrorism on FDI. Moreover, multilateral aid also decreases the adverse effect of unclear and total terrorisms on FDI. Policy implications are discussed

    The bii4africa dataset of faunal and floral population intactness estimates across Africa's major land uses

    Sub-Saharan Africa is under-represented in global biodiversity datasets, particularly regarding the impact of land use on species’ population abundances. Drawing on recent advances in expert elicitation to ensure data consistency, 200 experts were convened using a modified-Delphi process to estimate ‘intactness scores’: the remaining proportion of an ‘intact’ reference population of a species group in a particular land use, on a scale from 0 (no remaining individuals) to 1 (same abundance as the reference) and, in rare cases, to 2 (populations that thrive in human-modified landscapes). The resulting bii4africa dataset contains intactness scores representing terrestrial vertebrates (tetrapods: ±5,400 amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and vascular plants (±45,000 forbs, graminoids, trees, shrubs) in sub-Saharan Africa across the region’s major land uses (urban, cropland, rangeland, plantation, protected, etc.) and intensities (e.g., large-scale vs smallholder cropland). This dataset was co-produced as part of the Biodiversity Intactness Index for Africa Project. Additional uses include assessing ecosystem condition; rectifying geographic/taxonomic biases in global biodiversity indicators and maps; and informing the Red List of Ecosystems
