Navigating the bio-politics of childhood
Childhood research has long shared a bio-political terrain with state agencies in which children figure primarily as ‘human futures’. In the 20th century bio-social dualism helped to make that terrain navigable by researchers, but, as life processes increasingly become key sites of bio-political action, bio-social dualism is becoming less useful as a navigational aid. The contribution that a view of childhood as a ‘hybrid’ phenomenon might make to developing new navigational aids is considered. A Foucaultian reading of the history of childhood bio-politics yields three ‘multiplicities’ of childhood. The assistance these can offer in navigating the contemporary biopolitics of childhood is described
Robust Computer Algebra, Theorem Proving, and Oracle AI
In the context of superintelligent AI systems, the term "oracle" has two
meanings. One refers to modular systems queried for domain-specific tasks.
Another usage, referring to a class of systems which may be useful for
addressing the value alignment and AI control problems, is a superintelligent
AI system that only answers questions. The aim of this manuscript is to survey
contemporary research problems related to oracles which align with long-term
research goals of AI safety. We examine existing question answering systems and
argue that their high degree of architectural heterogeneity makes them poor
candidates for rigorous analysis as oracles. On the other hand, we identify
computer algebra systems (CASs) as being primitive examples of domain-specific
oracles for mathematics and argue that efforts to integrate computer algebra
systems with theorem provers, systems which have largely been developed
independent of one another, provide a concrete set of problems related to the
notion of provable safety that has emerged in the AI safety community. We
review approaches to interfacing CASs with theorem provers, describe
well-defined architectural deficiencies that have been identified with CASs,
and suggest possible lines of research and practical software projects for

Do all stars in the solar neighbourhood form in clusters? A cautionary note on the use of the distribution of surface densities
Bressert et al. recently showed that the surface density distribution of
low-mass, young stellar objects (YSOs) in the solar neighbourhood is
approximately log-normal. The authors conclude that the star formation process
is hierarchical and that only a small fraction of stars form in dense star
clusters. Here, we show that the peak and the width of the density distribution
are also what follow if all stars form in bound clusters which are not
significantly affected by the presence of gas and expand by two-body
relaxation. The peak of the surface density distribution is simply obtained
from the typical ages (few Myr) and cluster membership number (few hundred)
typifying nearby star-forming regions. This result depends weakly on initial
cluster sizes, provided that they are sufficiently dense (initial half mass
radius of <0.3 pc) for dynamical evolution to be important at an age of a few
Myr. We conclude that the degeneracy of the YSO surface density distribution

Astronomical Applications of Multi-Core Fiber Technology
Optical fibers have altered astronomical instrument design by allowing for a complex, often large instrument to be mounted in a remote and stable location with respect to the telescope. The fibers also enable the possibility to rearrange the signal from a focal plane to form a psuedo-slit at the entrance to a spectrograph, optimizing the detector usage and enabling the study of hundreds of thousands of stars or galaxies simultaneously. Multi-core fibers in particular offer several favorable properties with respect to traditional fibers: 1) the separation between single-mode cores is greatly reduced and highly regular with respect to free standing fibers, 2) they offer a monolithic package with multi-fiber capabilities and 3) they operate at the diffraction limit. These properties have enabled the realization of single component photonic lanterns, highly simplified fiber Bragg gratings, and advanced fiber mode scramblers. In addition, the precise grid of cores has enabled the design of efficient single-mode fiber integral field units for spectroscopy. In this article, we provide an overview of the broad range of applications enabled by multi-core fiber technology in astronomy and outline future areas of development
AI Safety and Reproducibility: Establishing Robust Foundations for the Neuropsychology of Human Values
We propose the creation of a systematic effort to identify and replicate key
findings in neuropsychology and allied fields related to understanding human
values. Our aim is to ensure that research underpinning the value alignment
problem of artificial intelligence has been sufficiently validated to play a

Integrative Biological Simulation, Neuropsychology, and AI Safety
We describe a biologically-inspired research agenda with parallel tracks
aimed at AI and AI safety. The bottom-up component consists of building a
sequence of biophysically realistic simulations of simple organisms such as the
nematode , the fruit fly ,
and the zebrafish to serve as platforms for research into AI
algorithms and system architectures. The top-down component consists of an
approach to value alignment that grounds AI goal structures in neuropsychology,
broadly considered. Our belief is that parallel pursuit of these tracks will
inform the development of value-aligned AI systems that have been inspired by
embodied organisms with sensorimotor integration. An important set of side
benefits is that the research trajectories we describe here are grounded in
long-standing intellectual traditions within existing research communities and
funding structures. In addition, these research programs overlap with
significant contemporary themes in the biological and psychological sciences
