Methodology for environmental assessment of agri-environment schemes: the Agri Environmental Footprint Index
End of project reportAgri-environment schemes pay farmers for the provision of environmental services. Such schemes tend to have multiple measures that deliver multiple environmental objectives, and there is a lack of consistent methodology with which to measure the environmental benefits of such schemes. Neural network interpolation of the magnetic field for the LISA Pathfinder Diagnostics Subsystem
LISA Pathfinder is a science and technology demonstrator of the European
Space Agency within the framework of its LISA mission, which aims to be the
first space-borne gravitational wave observatory. The payload of LISA
Pathfinder is the so-called LISA Technology Package, which is designed to
measure relative accelerations between two test masses in nominal free fall.
Its disturbances are monitored and dealt by the diagnostics subsystem. This
subsystem consists of several modules, and one of these is the magnetic
diagnostics system, which includes a set of four tri-axial fluxgate
magnetometers, intended to measure with high precision the magnetic field at
the positions of the test masses. However, since the magnetometers are located
far from the positions of the test masses, the magnetic field at their
positions must be interpolated. It has been recently shown that because there
are not enough magnetic channels, classical interpolation methods fail to
derive reliable measurements at the positions of the test masses, while neural
network interpolation can provide the required measurements at the desired
accuracy. In this paper we expand these studies and we assess the reliability
and robustness of the neural network interpolation scheme for variations of the
locations and possible offsets of the magnetometers, as well as for changes in
environmental conditions. We find that neural networks are robust enough to
derive accurate measurements of the magnetic field at the positions of the test
masses in most circumstances
Microsatellite alteration and immunohistochemical expression profile of chromosome 9p21 in patients with sporadic renal cell carcinoma following surgical resection.
BACKGROUND: Long-term prognostic significance of loss of heterozygosity on chromosome 9p21 for localized renal cell carcinoma following surgery remains unreported. The study assessed the frequency of deletions of different loci of chromosome 9p along with immunohistochemical profile of proteins in surgically resected renal cancer tissue and correlated this with long-term outcomes. METHODS: DNA was extracted from renal tumours and corresponding normal kidney tissues in prospectively collected samples of 108 patients who underwent surgical resection for clinically localized disease between January 2001 and December 2005, providing a minimum of 9 years follow-up for each participant. After checking quality of DNA, amplified by PCR, loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on chromosome 9p was assessed using 6 microsatellite markers in 77 clear cell carcinoma. Only 5 of the markers showed LOH (D9S1814, D9S916, D9S974, D9S942, and D9S171). Protein expression of p15(INK4b), p16(INK4a), p14(ARF), CAIX, and adipose related protein (ADFP) were demonstrated by immunostaining in normal and cancer tissues. Loss of heterozygosity for microsatellite analysis was correlated with tumour characteristics, recurrence free, cancer specific, and overall survival, including significance of immunohistochemical profile of protein expressions. RESULTS: The main deletion was found at loci telomeric to CDKN2A region at D9S916. There was a significant correlation between frequency of LOH stage (p = 0.005) and metastases (p = 0.006) suggesting a higher LOH for advanced and aggressive renal cell carcinoma. Most commonly observed LOH in the 3 markers: D9S916, D9S974, and D9S942 were associated with poor survival, and were statistically significant on multivariate analysis. Immunohistochemical expression of p14, p15, and p16 proteins were either low or absent in cancer tissue compared to normal. CONCLUSIONS: Loss of heterozygosity of p921 chromosome is associated with aggressive tumours, and predicts cancer specific or recurrence free survival on long-term follow-up. Challenges for a shared European countryside of uncertain future. Towards a modern community-based landscape perspective.
This paper addresses current changes in the highly diverse European landscape, and the way these transitions are being treated in policy and landscape management in the fragmented, heterogeneous and dynamic context of today’s Europe. It appears that intersecting driving forces are increasing the complexity of European landscapes and causing polarising developments in agricultural land use, biodiversity conservation and cultural landscape management. On the one hand, multifunctional rural landscapes, especially in peri-urban regions, provide services and functions that serve the citizens in their demand for identity, support their sense of belonging and offer opportunities for recreation and involvement in practical landscape management. On the other hand industrial agricultural production on increasingly large farms produce food, feed, fibre and energy to serve expanding international markets with rural liveability and accessibility as a minor issue. The intermediate areas of traditionally dominant small and family farms in Europe seem to be gradually declining in profitability. The paper discusses the potential of a governance approach that can cope with the requirement of optimising land sharing conditions and community-based landscape development, while adapting to global market conditions
Complexity in project studies:A rhetorical device perspective
A frequently used term in project studies is that of complexity. This term typically conveys the presence of multiple intricate and interrelated project factors that render prediction, and ultimately performance, challenging. Complexity is ubiquitous in the context of projects, and there are competing notions of complexity and, consequently, how to cope with it. Drawing on an integrative review approach, we explore four predominant notions of complexity in project studies, provide examples of illustrative research-based constructs (root metaphors) associated with each, and discuss their differences. In doing so, we first explore Bent Flyvbjerg's idea about the "Iron Law of Mega-Projects"as an example of complexity inherent in the project environment. Next, Martin Barnes' proposal of the "Iron Triangle"serves as an example of complexity inherent in the project. Then, Kristian Kreiner's "Drifting Environments"concept is used as an example of complexity emerging in the project environment. Finally, Albert Hirschman's idea about the "Hiding Hand"serves as an example of complexity emerging in the project. After exploring the four notions, we discuss how each can serve as a potential rhetorical devise for creating relationships and reasoning between complexity and project (mis-)performance. Based on the study, we suggest that complexity in project studies, despite its linguistic grounding, exhibits polysemy in the sense that it is associated with a multitude of notions and connotations. This polysemy both obscures the phenomenon of complexity while offering a plethora of opportunities for rhetorically linking and justifying project conditions and project (mis-)performance.</p

Testing of optical components to assure performance in a high acerage power environment
Evaluation and testing of the optical components used in the Atomic Vapor Laser Isotope Separation (AVLIS) plant is critical for qualification of suppliers, development of new optical multilayer designs and monufacturing processes, and assurance of performance in the production cycle. The range of specifications requires development of specialized test equipment and methods which are not routine or readily available in industry. Specifications are given on material characteristics such as index homogeneity, subsurface damage left after polishing, microscopic surface defects and contamination, coating absorption, and high average power laser damage. The approach to testing these performance characteristics and assuring the quality throughout the production cycle is described
