Far-infrared absorption in parallel quantum wires with weak tunneling
We study collective and single-particle intersubband excitations in a system
of quantum wires coupled via weak tunneling. For an isolated wire with
parabolic confinement, the Kohn's theorem guarantees that the absorption
spectrum represents a single sharp peak centered at the frequency given by the
bare confining potential. We show that the effect of weak tunneling between two
parabolic quantum wires is twofold: (i) additional peaks corresponding to
single-particle excitations appear in the absorption spectrum, and (ii) the
main absorption peak acquires a depolarization shift. We also show that the
interplay between tunneling and weak perpendicular magnetic field drastically
enhances the dispersion of single-particle excitations. The latter leads to a
strong damping of the intersubband plasmon for magnetic fields exceeding a

Immunization of Noncolonized Cystic Fibrosis Patients against Pseudomonas aeruginosa
The long-term safety and immunogenicity of a polyvalent Pseudomonas aeruginosa conjugate vaccine was evaluated in 30 noncolonized cystic fibrosis patients. Four doses were administered over 3 years, and patients were followed for a mean of 38 months. No acute or long-term adverse effects were noted. Immunization engendered a significant antibody response to all vaccine components. A decline in titers during year 3 of observation was associated with a marked rise in the isolation of P. aeruginosa. This organism was isolated repeatedly from the respiratory tract of 4 patients and only once from 7 patients. The remaining patients were repeatedly culture-negative. Only 1 patient showed clinical deterioration associated with multiple isolations of P. aeruginos
Low-temperature structural model of hcp solid C
We report intermolecular potential-energy calculations for solid C_ and
determine the optimum static orientations of the molecules at low temperature;
we find them to be consistent with the monoclinic structural model proposed by
us in an earlier report [Solid State Commun. {\bf 105), 247 (1998)]. This model
indicates that the C_5 axis of the molecule is tilted by an angle 18^o
from the monoclinic b axis in contrast with the molecular orientation proposed
by Verheijen {\it et al.} [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 166}, 287 (1992)] where the C_5
axis is parallel to the monoclinic b axis. In this calculation we have
incorporated the effective bond charge Coulomb potential together with the
Lennard-Jones potential between the molecule at the origin of the monoclinic
unit cell and its six nearest neighbours, three above and three below. The
minimum energy configuration for the molecular orientations turns out to be at
=18^o, =8^o, and =5^o, where , , and

Shrinkage of Gobiocypris rarus, Procypris rabaudi, and Sinilabeo rendahli preserved in formalin
Length measurements of preserved fishes are necessary in many types of fish surveys because logistics often do not allow for fish measurement immediately after catch. If the fixative causes significant shrinkage, then the preserved lengths cannot be directly used to indicate accurate live lengths. The objective of this study was to determine how preservation in formalin affects standard length of Gobiocypris rarus larvae (24-day-old and newly hatched), larval Procypris rabaudi (4-day-old), and larval Sinilabeo rendahli (12-day-old). Fishes were measured (to nearest 0.01 mm) and individually fixed in the appropriate formalin solution (2.5% or 5.0% formalin), then re-measured at 0.5, 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, 45 and 75 days after preservation to follow the time course of shrinkage. Most of the shrinkage occurred within the first half day after preservation. The 5.0% formalin caused a higher relative shrinkage rate than did the 2.5% solution; however, the difference was not statistically significant. Lamellar to Rod Eutectic Transition in the Hypereutectic Nickel- Aluminum Alloy
Directional solidification experiments were carried out on the hypereutectic Ni-25 at.% Al alloy to examine the effect of growth velocity on the eutectic microstructure. The growth velocity was varied from 1 to 20 μm/s at a constant temperature gradient of 10.0 K/mm. The microstructural observations of unidirectionally solidified samples show that the lamellar eutectic growth was observed in the sample solidified at a constant velocity of 1 μm/s and the rod eutectic growth at velocities higher than 10 μm/s. A microstructural transition from lamellar to rod eutectics was achieved at the intermediate velocity. The lamellar to rod eutectic transition was shown to result from the compositional change due to the presence of strong convection in the melt. The undercooling-spacing curves showed that the average eutectic spacings for the lamellar and the rod structures were 1.6 times larger than that in the minimum undercooling for a given velocity
Safety and Immunogenicity of Live Oral Cholera and Typhoid Vaccines Administered Alone or in Combination with Antimalarial Drugs, Oral Polio Vaccine, or Yellow Fever Vaccine
The effects of concomitant administration of antimalarial drugs, oral polio vaccine, or yellow fever vaccine on the immune response elicited by the Vibrio cholerae CVD103-HgR and Salmonella typhi Ty21a live oral vaccines were investigated. Healthy adults were immunized with CVD103- HgR alone or combined with Ty21a. Subjects were randomized to simultaneously receive mefloquine, chloroquine or proguanil, or oral polio or yellow fever vaccine. The vibriocidal antibody seroconversion rate was significantly reduced (P = .008) only in the group that received chloroquine with the CVD103-HgR. The geometric mean vibriocidal antibody titer was significantly decreased in the groups that received chloroquine (P = .001) or mefloquine (P = .02) compared with titers in groups that received CVD103-HgR alone. However, similar immunosuppressive effects were not observed in the groups immunized with Ty21a and CVD103-HgR. Only the concomitant administration of proguanil effected a significant (P = .013) decline in the anti-S. typhi lipopolysaccharide antibody response. Treatment of severe acute respiratory syndrome with lopinavir/ritonavir: A multicentre retrospective matched cohort study
Objectives. To investigate the possible benefits and adverse effects of the addition of lopinavir/ritonavir to a standard treatment protocol for the treatment of severe acute respiratory syndrome. Design. Retrospective matched cohort study. Setting. Four acute regional hospitals in Hong Kong. Patients and methods. Seventy-five patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome treated with lopinavir/ritonavir in addition to a standard treatment protocol adopted by the Hospital Authority were matched with controls retrieved from the Hospital Authority severe acute respiratory syndrome central database. Matching was done with respect to age, sex, the presence of co-morbidities, lactate dehydrogenase level and the use of pulse steroid therapy. The 75 patients treated with lopinavir/ritonavir were divided into two subgroups for analysis: lopinavir/ritonavir as initial treatment, and lopinavir/ritonavir as rescue therapy. These groups were compared with matched cohorts of 634 and 343 patients, respectively. Outcomes including overall death rate, oxygen desaturation, intubation rate, and use of pulse methylprednisolone were reviewed. Results. The addition of lopinavir/ritonavir as initial treatment was associated with a reduction in the overall death rate (2.3%) and intubation rate (0%), when compared with a matched cohort who received standard treatment (15.6% and 11.0% respectively, P<0.05) and a lower rate of use of methylprednisolone at a lower mean dose. The subgroup who had received lopinavir/ritonavir as rescue therapy, showed no difference in overall death rate and rates of oxygen desaturation and intubation compared with the matched cohort, and received a higher mean dose of methylprednisolone. Conclusion. The addition of lopinavir/ritonavir to a standard treatment protocol as an initial treatment for severe acute respiratory syndrome appeared to be associated with improved clinical outcome. A randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial is recommended during future epidemics to further evaluate this treatment.published_or_final_versio
