Impacting device for testing insulation
An electro-mechanical impacting device for testing the bonding of foam insulation to metal is descirbed. The device lightly impacts foam insulation attached to metal to determine whether the insulation is properly bonded to the metal and to determine the quality of the bond. A force measuring device, preferably a load cell mounted on the impacting device, measures the force of the impact and the duration of the time the hammer head is actually in contact with the insulation. The impactor is designed in the form of a handgun having a driving spring which can propel a plunger forward to cause a hammer head to impact the insulation. The device utilizes a trigger mechanism which provides precise adjustements, allowing fireproof operation
Improving Small Object Proposals for Company Logo Detection
Many modern approaches for object detection are two-staged pipelines. The
first stage identifies regions of interest which are then classified in the
second stage. Faster R-CNN is such an approach for object detection which
combines both stages into a single pipeline. In this paper we apply Faster
R-CNN to the task of company logo detection. Motivated by its weak performance
on small object instances, we examine in detail both the proposal and the
classification stage with respect to a wide range of object sizes. We
investigate the influence of feature map resolution on the performance of those
stages.
Based on theoretical considerations, we introduce an improved scheme for
generating anchor proposals and propose a modification to Faster R-CNN which
leverages higher-resolution feature maps for small objects. We evaluate our
approach on the FlickrLogos dataset improving the RPN performance from 0.52 to
0.71 (MABO) and the detection performance from 0.52 to 0.67 (mAP).Comment: 8 Pages, ICMR 201
Insulation bonding test system
A method and a system for testing the bonding of foam insulation attached to metal is described. The system involves the use of an impacter which has a calibrated load cell mounted on a plunger and a hammer head mounted on the end of the plunger. When the impacter strikes the insulation at a point to be tested, the load cell measures the force of the impact and the precise time interval during which the hammer head is in contact with the insulation. This information is transmitted as an electrical signal to a load cell amplifier where the signal is conditioned and then transmitted to a fast Fourier transform (FFT) analyzer. The FFT analyzer produces energy spectral density curves which are displayed on a video screen. The termination frequency of the energy spectral density curve may be compared with a predetermined empirical scale to determine whether a igh quality bond, good bond, or debond is present at the point of impact
September 2017's geoeffective space weather and impacts to Caribbean radio communications during Hurricane response

NOAA's and NASA's well‐instrumented spacecraft observed the evolution of these geoeffective events from their solar origins, through the interplanetary medium, to their geospace impacts. The 6 September X9.3 flare was the largest to date for the nearly concluded solar cycle 24 and, in fact, the brightest recorded since an X17 flare in September 2005, which occurred during the declining phase of solar cycle 23. Rapid ionization of the sunlit upper atmosphere occurred, disrupting high‐frequency communications in the Caribbean region while emergency managers were scrambling to provide critical recovery services caused by the region's devastating hurricanes. The 10 September west limb eruption resulted in the first solar energetic particle event since 2012 with sufficient flux and energy to yield a ground level enhancement. Spacecraft at L1, including DSCOVR, sampled the associated interplanetary coronal mass ejections minutes before their collision with Earth's magnetosphere. Strong compression and erosion of the dayside magnetosphere occurred, placing geosynchronous satellites in the magnetosheath. Subsequent geomagnetic storms produced magnificent auroral displays and elevated hazards to power systems. Through the lens of NOAA's space weather R‐S‐G storm scales, this event period increased hazards for systems susceptible to elevated “radio blackout” (R3‐strong), “solar radiation storm” (S3‐strong), and “geomagnetic storm” (G4‐severe) conditions. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the September 2017 space weather event, and a summary of its consequences, including forecaster, post‐event analyst, and communication operator perspectives
Documentary criminology: Girl Model as a case study
Visual and cultural criminology are integrated with documentary filmmaking to develop a theoretically grounded, practice-based approach called ‘documentary criminology’. The first section establishes the need for documentary filmmaking in criminology and outlines methodological opportunities. The second section examines theoretically the aesthetics and substance of documentary criminology. The third section takes the film Girl Model (Redmon and Sabin, 2011) as a case study to demonstrate how documentary criminology embedded in lived experience (in this case, the experience of scouts that recruit young Russian girls, purportedly for the modelling industry) can depict sensuous immediacy. The final section contrasts the aesthetic and ethical consequences of documentary criminology within Carrabine’s (2012, 2014) concept of ‘just’ images to a documentary filmmaking approach that remains interpretively open-ended.
