Lie Superalgebras and the Multiplet Structure of the Genetic Code II: Branching Schemes
Continuing our attempt to explain the degeneracy of the genetic code using
basic classical Lie superalgebras, we present the branching schemes for the
typical codon representations (typical 64-dimensional irreducible
representations) of basic classical Lie superalgebras and find three schemes
that do reproduce the degeneracies of the standard code, based on the
orthosymplectic algebra osp(5|2) and differing only in details of the symmetry

The free energy of the Potts model: from the continuous to the first-order transition region
We present a large expansion of the 2d -states Potts model free
energies up to order 9 in . Its analysis leads us to an ansatz
which, in the first-order region, incorporates properties inferred from the
known critical regime at , and predicts, for , the
energy cumulant scales as the power of the correlation length. The
parameter-free energy distributions reproduce accurately, without reference to
any interface effect, the numerical data obtained in a simulation for
with lattices of linear dimensions up to L=50. The pure phase specific heats
are predicted to be much larger, at , than the values extracted from
current finite size scaling analysis of extrema. Implications for safe

Fatal anaphylactoid response to protamine after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty
A generalized skin erythema and severe hypotension developed following administration of protamine for the reversal of heparin anticoagulation after an unsuccessful attempt at percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in a patient who had never been exposed to protamines before. Evidence of classical pathway complement activation was present indicating that this reaction could have been triggered by a non-immunological mechanism. Extrapolations of Lattice Meson Form Factors
We use chiral perturbation theory to study the extrapolations necessary to
make physical predictions from lattice QCD data for the electromagnetic form
factors of pseudoscalar mesons. We focus on the quark mass, momentum, lattice
spacing, and volume dependence and apply our results to simulations employing
mixed actions of Ginsparg-Wilson valence quarks and staggered sea quarks. To
determine charge radii at quark masses on the lattices currently used, we find
that all extrapolations except the one to infinite volume make significant

Size Effect in Fracture: Roughening of Crack Surfaces and Asymptotic Analysis
Recently the scaling laws describing the roughness development of fracture
surfaces was proposed to be related to the macroscopic elastic energy released
during crack propagation [Mor00]. On this basis, an energy-based asymptotic
analysis allows to extend the link to the nominal strength of structures. We
show that a Family-Vicsek scaling leads to the classical size effect of linear
elastic fracture mechanics. On the contrary, in the case of an anomalous
scaling, there is a smooth transition from the case of no size effect, for
small structure sizes, to a power law size effect which appears weaker than the
linear elastic fracture mechanics one, in the case of large sizes. This

Lattice QCD with mixed actions
We discuss some of the implications of simulating QCD when the action used
for the sea quarks is different from that used for the valence quarks. We
present exploratory results for the hadron mass spectrum and pseudoscalar meson
decay constants using improved staggered sea quarks and HYP-smeared overlap
valence quarks. We propose a method for matching the valence quark mass to the
sea quark mass and demonstrate it on UKQCD clover data in the simpler case
where the sea and valence actions are the same.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures some minor modification to text and figures.

Atmospheric parameters and chemical properties of red giants in the CoRoT asteroseismology fields
A precise characterisation of the red giants in the seismology fields of the
CoRoT satellite is a prerequisite for further in-depth seismic modelling.
High-resolution FEROS and HARPS spectra were obtained as part of the
ground-based follow-up campaigns for 19 targets holding great asteroseismic
potential. These data are used to accurately estimate their fundamental
parameters and the abundances of 16 chemical species in a self-consistent
manner. Some powerful probes of mixing are investigated (the Li and CNO
abundances, as well as the carbon isotopic ratio in a few cases). The
information provided by the spectroscopic and seismic data is combined to
provide more accurate physical parameters and abundances. The stars in our
sample follow the general abundance trends as a function of the metallicity
observed in stars of the Galactic disk. After an allowance is made for the
chemical evolution of the interstellar medium, the observational signature of
internal mixing phenomena is revealed through the detection at the stellar
surface of the products of the CN cycle. A contamination by NeNa-cycled
material in the most massive stars is also discussed. With the asteroseismic
constraints, these data will pave the way for a detailed theoretical
investigation of the physical processes responsible for the transport of
