Rare B decays and Tevatron top-pair asymmetry
The recent Tevatron result on the top quark forward-backward asymmetry, which
deviates from its standard model prediction by 3.4, has prompted many
authors to build new models to account for this anomaly. Among the various
proposals, we find that those mechanisms which produce via - or
-channel can have a strong correlation to the rare B decays. We demonstrate
this link by studying a model with a new charged gauge boson, . In terms of
the current measurements on decays, we conclude that the branching
ratio for is affected most by the new effects.
Furthermore, using the world average branching ratio for the exclusive B decays
at level, we discuss the allowed values for the new parameters.
Finally, we point out that the influence of the new physics effects on the
direct CP asymmetry in B decays is insignificant.Comment: 15 page, 6 figures, typos corrected and references added, final

Hard Interactions of Quarks and Gluons: a Primer for LHC Physics
In this review article, we develop the perturbative framework for the
calculation of hard scattering processes. We undertake to provide both a
reasonably rigorous development of the formalism of hard scattering of quarks
and gluons as well as an intuitive understanding of the physics behind the
scattering. We emphasize the importance of logarithmic corrections as well as
power counting of the strong coupling constant in order to understand the
behavior of hard scattering processes. We include "rules of thumb" as well as
"official recommendations", and where possible seek to dispel some myths.
Experiences that have been gained at the Fermilab Tevatron are recounted and,

Chemicals released by male sea cucumber mediate aggregation and spawning behaviours
The importance of chemical communication in reproduction has been demonstrated in many marine broadcast spawners. However, little is known about the use of chemical communication by echinoderms, the nature of the compounds involved and their mechanism(s) of action. Here, the hypothesis that the sea cucumber Holothuria arguinensis uses chemical communication for aggregation and spawning was tested. Water conditioned by males, but not females, attracted both males and females; gonad homogenates and coelomic fluid had no effect on attraction. Male spawning water, but not female spawning water, stimulated males and females to release their gametes; the spermatozoa alone did not induce spawning. H. arguinensis male spawning water also induced spawning in the phylogenetically related H. mammata. This indicates that males release pheromones together with their gametes that induce spawning in conspecifics and possibly sympatric species. Finally, the male pheromone seems to be a mixture with at least one labile compound (biological activity is lost after four hours at ambient temperature) possibly including phosphatidylcholines. Hypothermia-induced hyperphosphorylation: a new model to study tau kinase inhibitors
Tau hyperphosphorylation is one hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Pharmaceutical companies have thus developed kinase inhibitors aiming to reduce tau hyperphosphorylation. One obstacle in screening for tau kinase inhibitors is the low phosphorylation levels of AD-related phospho-epitopes in normal adult mice and cultured cells. We have shown that hypothermia induces tau hyperphosphorylation in vitro and in vivo. Here, we hypothesized that hypothermia could be used to assess tau kinase inhibitors efficacy. Hypothermia applied to models of biological gradual complexity such as neuronal-like cells, ex vivo brain slices and adult non-transgenic mice leads to tau hyperphosphorylation at multiple AD-related phospho-epitopes. We show that Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3 inhibitors LiCl and AR-A014418, as well as roscovitine, a cyclin-dependent kinase 5 inhibitor, decrease hypothermia-induced tau hyperphosphorylation, leading to different tau phosphorylation profiles. Therefore, we propose hypothermia-induced hyperphosphorylation as a reliable, fast, convenient and inexpensive tool to screen for tau kinase inhibitors

Membrane-cryogenic hybrid CO2 2 capture : A review
The membrane-cryogenic hybrid process is a promising CO2 capture process, which combines the advantages of membrane and cryogenic, such as high efficiency (up to 98 % CO2 captured) and low energy consumption (specific energy consumption around 1.7 MJ/kg CO2 avoided). Through pretreatment by membranes, CO2 concentration can be increased, which makes it possible to separate CO2 via phase change in the cryogenic unit. This work reviews the current status of the development of membrane-cryogenic hybrid processes. The synergy between membrane and cryogenic separation is summarized to identify the bottleneck of such processes and provide insights for process improvement. It was found that cold temperatures would be beneficial to reduce CO2 activation energy and then improve CO2 selectivity of membranes. To further improve the CO2 separation performance, the potential intensification methods of the membrane-cryogenic hybrid process including cold-membrane synthesis, process optimization via heat integration are discussed and envisioned. </p
