Detecting and predicting spatial and interannual patterns of temperate forest springtime phenology in the eastern U.S.
We performed a diagnostic analysis of AVHRR-NDVI and gridded, temperature data for the deciduous forests of the eastern U.S., calibrating temperature accumulation model with satellite data for 1982–1993. The model predicts interannual variability in onset date based upon year-to-year changes in springtime temperature. RMS error over the period ranges from 6.9 days in the northern portion of the domain to 10.7 days in the south. The analysis revealed a relationship between temperature accumulation and satellite derived onset date (rank correlation = 0.31–0.62). The required temperature accumulation threshold can be expressed as a function of mean temperature (R2 of 0.90) to facilitate predictive analysis of phenological onset, or when remote sensing data are unavailable
Strategic Niche Management (SNM) beyond sustainability. An exploration of key findings of SNM through the lens of ICT and privacy
Recently the governance of socio-technical transitions to sustainability is gaining attention in the field of innovation studies. One particular approach is that of Strategic Niche Management (SNM), which advocates the creation of protected space to experiment with radically new sustainable socio-technical practices. This paper contributes by asking whether this approach is also useful for analysis and governance of other types of socially desirable change. This question is addressed through a review of six key-findings of Strategic Niche Management and an original case study in the field of Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies for mobile payment. The social value at stake in this case is not sustainability but privacy. We draw three main conclusions. First, we find that the key-findings and concepts in SNM for sustainability are helpful to understand and interpret much of the data collected for the NFC case and privacy. However, there are notable differences in each of the key-findings, i.e findings related to a) the local-global distinction in SNM, b) expectations, c) social networks, d) learning, e) protection, and f) niche-regime interactions. Second, in relation to governance, the role of sustainability values (being a promising value to pursue) and privacy values (being a bottom-line value to defend) are notably different. Third, these differences result in different roles of public bodies in niche development. Topographic determinants of foot and mouth disease transmission in the UK 2001 epidemic
Background
A key challenge for modelling infectious disease dynamics is to understand the spatial spread of infection in real landscapes. This ideally requires a parallel record of spatial epidemic spread and a detailed map of susceptible host density along with relevant transport links and geographical features.
Results
Here we analyse the most detailed such data to date arising from the UK 2001 foot and mouth epidemic. We show that Euclidean distance between infectious and susceptible premises is a better predictor of transmission risk than shortest and quickest routes via road, except where major geographical features intervene.
Conclusion
Thus, a simple spatial transmission kernel based on Euclidean distance suffices in most regions, probably reflecting the multiplicity of transmission routes during the epidemic
Sub-arcsecond high sensitivity measurements of the DG~Tau jet with e-MERLIN
We present very high spatial resolution deep radio continuum observations at
5 GHz (6 cm) made with e-MERLIN of the young stars DG Tau A and B. Assuming it
is launched very close (~=1 au) from the star, our results suggest that the DG
Tau A outflow initially starts as a poorly focused wind and undergoes
significant collimation further along the jet (~=50 au). We derive jet
parameters for DG Tau A and find an initial jet opening angle of 86 degrees
within 2 au of the source, a mass-loss rate of 1.5x10^-8 solar masses/yr for
the ionised component of the jet, and the total ejection/accretion ratio to
range from 0.06-0.3. These results are in line with predictions from MHD

Accelerometer-based physical activity levels differ between week and weekend ways in British preschool children
Participation in physical activity (PA) is fundamental to children’s future health. Studies examining the temporal pattern of PA between weekdays and weekends in British preschool children are lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare PA levels between week and weekend days for UK preschool children, using objective measurements. One hundred and eighty-five preschool children (99 boys, 86 girls, aged 4–5 years), from central England wore a triaxial accelerometer (GENEActiv) for 4 days to determine PA. The time (min) and percentage (%) of time spent in light, moderate and vigorous PA (MVPA) was determined using specific cut-points for counts per minute related to 3–5 year olds. Of the sample, none of the children met the UK recommended 180 min or more of PA per day. A significant difference (P < 0.05) was observed between the amount of time that preschool children spent in sedentary behaviours on weekdays (91.9%) compared to weekend days (96.9%). During weekdays and weekend days, 6.3% and 2.0% of time was spent in MVPA, respectively. Therefore, a substantial proportion of British preschool children’s day is spent in sedentary behaviours, with less MVPA accrued during the weekend. Regular engagement during the weekdays provides opportunities to accrue PA, which may not be present on weekend days.N/
Near-surface remote sensing of spatial and temporal variation in canopy phenology
There is a need to document how plant phenology is responding to global change factors, particularly warming trends. “Near-surface” remote sensing, using radiometric instruments or imaging sensors, has great potential to improve phenological monitoring because automated observations can be made at high temporal frequency. Here we build on previous work and show how inexpensive, networked digital cameras (“webcams”) can be used to document spatial and temporal variation in the spring and autumn phenology of forest canopies. We use two years of imagery from a deciduous, northern hardwood site, and one year of imagery from a coniferous, boreal transition site. A quantitative signal is obtained by splitting images into separate red, green, and blue color channels and calculating the relative brightness of each channel for “regions of interest” within each image. We put the observed phenological signal in context by relating it to seasonal patterns of gross primary productivity, inferred from eddy covariance measurements of surface–atmosphere CO2 exchange. We show that spring increases, and autumn decreases, in canopy greenness can be detected in both deciduous and coniferous stands. In deciduous stands, an autumn red peak is also observed. The timing and rate of spring development and autumn senescence varies across the canopy, with greater variability in autumn than spring. Interannual variation in phenology can be detected both visually and quantitatively; delayed spring onset in 2007 compared to 2006 is related to a prolonged cold spell from day 85 to day 110. This work lays the foundation for regional- to continental-scale camera-based monitoring of phenology at network observatory sites, e.g., National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) or AmeriFlux
Polarised infrared emission from X-ray binary jets
Near-infrared (NIR) and optical polarimetric observations of a selection of
X-ray binaries are presented. The targets were observed using the Very Large
Telescope and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope. We detect a significant
level (3 sigma) of linear polarisation in four sources. The polarisation is
found to be intrinsic (at the > 3 sigma level) in two sources; GRO J1655-40 (~
4-7% in H and Ks-bands during an outburst) and Sco X-1 (~ 0.1-0.9% in H and K),
which is stronger at lower frequencies. This is likely to be the signature of
optically thin synchrotron emission from the collimated jets in these systems,
whose presence indicates a partially-ordered magnetic field is present at the
inner regions of the jets. In Sco X-1 the intrinsic polarisation is variable
(and sometimes absent) in the H and K-bands. In the J-band (i.e. at higher
frequencies) the polarisation is not significantly variable and is consistent
with an interstellar origin. The optical light from GX 339-4 is also polarised,
but at a level and position angle consistent with scattering by interstellar
dust. The other polarised source is SS 433, which has a low level (0.5-0.8%) of
J-band polarisation, likely due to local scattering. The NIR counterparts of
GRO J0422+32, XTE J1118+480, 4U 0614+09 and Aql X-1 (which were all in or near
quiescence) have a linear polarisation level of < 16% (3 sigma upper limit,
some are < 6%). We discuss how such observations may be used to constrain the
ordering of the magnetic field close to the base of the jet in such systems.Comment: Accepted to be published in MNRAS; 13 pages, 6 figure
Exact theory of kinkable elastic polymers
The importance of nonlinearities in material constitutive relations has long
been appreciated in the continuum mechanics of macroscopic rods. Although the
moment (torque) response to bending is almost universally linear for small
deflection angles, many rod systems exhibit a high-curvature softening. The
signature behavior of these rod systems is a kinking transition in which the
bending is localized. Recent DNA cyclization experiments by Cloutier and Widom
have offered evidence that the linear-elastic bending theory fails to describe
the high-curvature mechanics of DNA. Motivated by this recent experimental
work, we develop a simple and exact theory of the statistical mechanics of
linear-elastic polymer chains that can undergo a kinking transition. We
characterize the kinking behavior with a single parameter and show that the
resulting theory reproduces both the low-curvature linear-elastic behavior
which is already well described by the Wormlike Chain model, as well as the
high-curvature softening observed in recent cyclization experiments.Comment: Revised for PRE. 40 pages, 12 figure
