The Cosserat continuum with electronic spin
The mathematical model of the Cosserat Continuum presents the opportunity to consider physical phenomena characterized by internal degrees of freedom. It is the purpose of this paper to apply this model to a series of problems related to the deformation of magnetic materials. The idea to investigate the deformation of a dielectric or magnetic material is not new. Toupin [1] has studied the coupling of an electric field with a deformation field, Tiersten [2] has extended Toupin’s calculations on magnetically saturated insulators, while Brown [3] has given a comprehensive exposition of magneto-elastic interactions1. The present paper may be considered a recapitulation of some known facts, together with extensions of the basic theory and applications to a number of important problems. It is based upon the modern general theory of the Cosserat Continuum, as given by Toupin [4] but adapted to this category of specific considerations
