    An assessement of global energy resource economic potentials

    This paper presents an assessment of global economic energy potentials for all major natural energy resources. This work is based on both an extensive literature review and calculations based onto natural resource assessment data. Economic potentials are presented in the form of cost-supply curves, in terms of energy flows for renewable energy sources, or fixed amounts for fossil and nuclear resources, using consistent energy units that allow direct comparisons to be made. These calculations take into account, and provide a theoretical framework for considering uncertainty in resource assessments, providing a novel contribution aimed at enabling the introduction of uncertainty into resource limitations used in energy modelling.     The best of both worlds? Online ties and the alternating use of social network sites in the context of migration

    While an ever-growing body of research is concerned with user behavior on individual social network sites (SNSs)—mostly Facebook—studies addressing an alternating use of two or more SNS are rare. Here, we investigate the relationship between alternating SNS use and social capital in the context of migration. Alternating SNS use avoids some of the problems associated with large networks located on one site; in particular the management of different social or cultural spheres. Not only does this strategy hold potential for increased social capital, it also provides a particular incentive for migrants faced with the challenge of staying in touch with back home and managing a new social environment. Two survey studies are presented that focus on the relationship between alternating SNS use and online ties in a migrant context involving Indian nationals. Study 1 looked at migration within India, whereas Study 2 compared international with domestic SNS users. In both studies, alternating SNS use added to the prediction of online network size and accounted for differences in network size found for migrant and non-migrant users. Differences were due to the number of peripheral ties, rather than core ties. Findings suggest that alternating SNS use may constitute a compensatory strategy that helps to overcome lower levels of socializing represented through a single SNS

    Seasonal changes in serum testosterone, 11-ketotestosterone, and 1713-estradiol levels in the brown bullhead, Ictalurus nebuIosus Lesueur

    The seasonal changes in gonadosomatic index (GSI) and strum testosterone, I I-ketotestosterone, and 17&estmdiol levels were measured in adult feral brown bullheads, Ictalurus nebulosus Lzsueur. The maximum GSI of both male and femalz brown bullheads was consjderably lower than that of most other teleostean species investigated. lo males, the GSI began to increase in April concomitant with an increase in water temperature from 3 to 6°C. The maximum GSI levels were evident throu_ghout May and June (during the prespawning and spawning periods). Peaks of serum testosterone and serum 11-ketotesrosterone leveb were evident in mid-April and late May to June, and in mid-April and mid-May, respxtively. In females here was a rapid increase in GSI during May, when the ambient water temperamre reached 16°C. The peak GSI was evident in mid- to late-May and had declined by early June. Peak serum testosterone and I 1-ketotestosterone levels were evident .in mid-April and again in late May. wbereas peak 17P-estradiol levels were fou.nd in mid-May and mid-June. The peak serum teswsterone levels in females were 4.5-fold higher than in the males, whereas che I I-ketotestosterone levels were similar in males and females

    Internet addiction in students: prevalence and risk factors

    The last decade has witnessed a large increase in research on the newly emerging mental health problem of Internet addiction. Rather than looking at Internet addiction per se, this study focused on particular activities on the Internet that might be potentially addictive and linked them to personality traits that might predispose individuals to Internet addiction. The aims of this study were (i) to assess the prevalence of clinically significant levels of Internet addiction, and to (ii) discern the interplay between personality traits and specific Internet uses in increasing the risk for Internet addiction. This cross-sectional online survey used data from 2,257 students of an English university. Results indicated that 3.2% of the students were classified as being addicted to the Internet. The included personality traits and uses of online activities explained 21.5% of the variance in Internet addiction. A combination of online shopping and neuroticism decreased the risk for Internet addiction, whereas a combination of online gaming and openness to experience increased it. In addition to this, frequent usage of online shopping and social online activities, high neuroticism and low agreeableness significantly increased the chances of being addicted to the Internet. Findings and their implications are discussed

    Source rupture process, directivity and and Coulomb stress change of the 12 January 2010 (Port-au-Prince Haiti, Mw7.0) earthquake

    The Haiti earthquake occurred on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 21:53:10 UTC. Its epi- center was at 18.46 degrees North, 72.53 degrees West, about 25 km WSW of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, along the tectonic boundary between Caribbean and North America plate dominated by left-lateral stri- ke slip motion and compression with 2 cm/yr of slip velocity eastward with respect to the North America plate. The earthquake was relatively shallow (about 13 km depth) with Mw 7.0 and CMT mechanism solution indica- ting left-lateral strike slip movement with a fault plane oriented toward the WNW-ESE. More than 10 aftershocks ranging from 5.0 to 5.9 in magnitude struck the area in hours following the main shock. Most of these af- tershocks have occurred to the west of the mainshock in the Mirogoane Lakes region and its distribution suggests that the length of the rupture was around 70 km. Rupture velocity and direction was constrained by using the directivity effect determined from broad-band waveforms recorded at regio- nal and teleseismic distances using DIRDOP computational code (DIRectivity DOPpler effect) [1]. The Results show that the rup- ture spread mainly from WNW to ESE with a velocity of 2.5 km/s. In order to obtain the spatiotemporal slip distribution of a fi- nite rupture model we have used teleseismic body wave and the Kikuchi and Kanamori’s method [2]. The inversion show complex source time function with a total scalar seismic moment of 2.2 x 1019Nm (Mw=6.9) a source duration of about 18 sec with a main energy relesea in the first 13 sec.
