Order by disorder and spiral spin liquid in frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnets
Frustration refers to competition between different interactions that cannot
be simultaneously satisfied, a familiar feature in many magnetic solids. Strong
frustration results in highly degenerate ground states, and a large suppression
of ordering by fluctuations. Key challenges in frustrated magnetism are
characterizing the fluctuating spin-liquid regime and determining the mechanism
of eventual order at lower temperature. Here, we study a model of a diamond
lattice antiferromagnet appropriate for numerous spinel materials. With
sufficiently strong frustration a massive ground state degeneracy develops
amongst spirals whose propagation wavevectors reside on a continuous
two-dimensional ``spiral surface'' in momentum space. We argue that an
important ordering mechanism is entropic splitting of the degenerate ground
states, an elusive phenomena called order-by-disorder. A broad ``spiral
spin-liquid'' regime emerges at higher temperatures, where the underlying
spiral surface can be directly revealed via spin correlations. We discuss the
agreement between these predictions and the well characterized spinel MnSc2S4
Stellar winds from Massive Stars
We review the various techniques through which wind properties of massive
stars - O stars, AB supergiants, Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs), Wolf-Rayet
(WR) stars and cool supergiants - are derived. The wind momentum-luminosity
relation (e.g. Kudritzki et al. 1999) provides a method of predicting mass-loss
rates of O stars and blue supergiants which is superior to previous
parameterizations. Assuming the theoretical sqrt(Z) metallicity dependence,
Magellanic Cloud O star mass-loss rates are typically matched to within a
factor of two for various calibrations. Stellar winds from LBVs are typically
denser and slower than equivalent B supergiants, with exceptional mass-loss
rates during giant eruptions Mdot=10^-3 .. 10^-1 Mo/yr (Drissen et al. 2001).
Recent mass-loss rates for Galactic WR stars indicate a downward revision of
2-4 relative to previous calibrations due to clumping (e.g. Schmutz 1997),
although evidence for a metallicity dependence remains inconclusive (Crowther
2000). Mass-loss properties of luminous (> 10^5 Lo) yellow and red supergiants
from alternative techniques remain highly contradictory. Recent Galactic and
LMC results for RSG reveal a large scatter such that typical mass-loss rates
lie in the range 10^-6 .. 10^-4 Mo/yr, with a few cases exhibiting 10^-3 Mo/yr.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, Review paper to appear in Proc `The influence of

Modulation of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase as a strategy to reduce vascular inflammation
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease in which initial vascular damage leads to extensive macrophage and lymphocyte infiltration. Although acutely glucocorticoids suppress inflammation, chronic glucocorticoid excess worsens atherosclerosis, possibly by exacerbating systemic cardiovascular risk factors. However, glucocorticoid action within the lesion may reduce neointimal proliferation and inflammation. Glucocorticoid levels within cells do not necessarily reflect circulating levels due to pre-receptor metabolism by 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (11β-HSDs). 11β-HSD2 converts active glucocorticoids into inert 11-keto forms. 11β-HSD1 catalyses the reverse reaction, regenerating active glucocorticoids. 11β-HSD2-deficiency/ inhibition causes hypertension, whereas deficiency/ inhibition of 11β-HSD1 generates a cardioprotective lipid profile and improves glycemic control. Importantly, 11β-HSD1-deficiency/ inhibition is atheroprotective, whereas 11β-HSD2-deficiency accelerates atherosclerosis. These effects are largely independent of systemic risk factors, reflecting modulation of glucocorticoid action and inflammation within the vasculature. Here, we consider whether evidence linking the 11β-HSDs to vascular inflammation suggests these isozymes are potential therapeutic targets in vascular injury and atherosclerosis
Extramuscular myofascial force transmission alters substantially the acute effects of surgical aponeurotomy: assessment by finite element modeling
Effects of extramuscular myofascial force transmission on the acute effects of aponeurotomy were studied using finite element
modeling and implications of such effects on surgery were discussed. Aponeurotomized EDL muscle of the rat was modeled in
two conditions: (1) fully isolated (2) with intact extramuscular connections. The specific goal was to assess the alterations
in muscle length-force characteristics in relation to sarcomere length distributions and to investigate how the mechanical
mechanism of the intervention is affected if the muscle is not isolated. Major effects of extramuscular myofascial force transmission
were shown on muscle length-force characteristics. In contrast to the identical proximal and distal forces of the aponeurotomized
isolated muscle, substantial proximo-distal force differences were shown for aponeurotomized muscle with extramuscular connections
(for all muscle lengths F
dist > F
prox after distal muscle lengthening). Proximal optimal length did not change whereas distal optimal length was lower (by 0.5 mm).
The optimal forces of the aponeurotomized muscle with extramuscular connections exerted at both proximal and distal tendons
were lower than that of isolated muscle (by 15 and 7%, respectively). The length of the gap separating the two cut ends of
the intervened aponeurosis decreases substantially due to extramuscular myofascial force transmission. The amplitude of the
difference in gap length was muscle length dependent (maximally 11.6% of the gap length of the extramuscularly connected muscle).
Extramuscular myofascial force transmission has substantial effects on distributions of lengths of sarcomeres within the muscle
fiber populations distal and proximal to the location of intervention: (a) Within the distal population, the substantial sarcomere
shortening at the proximal ends of muscle fibers due to the intervention remained unaffected however, extramuscular myofascial
force transmission caused a more pronounced serial distribution towards the distal ends of muscle fibers. (b) In contrast,
extramuscular myofascial force transmission limits the serial distribution of sarcomere lengths shown for the aponeurotomized
isolated muscle in the proximal population. Fiber stress distributions showed that extramuscular myofascial force transmission
causes most sarcomeres within the aponeurotomized muscle to attain lengths favorable for higher force exertion. It is concluded
that acute effects of aponeurotomy on muscular mechanics are affected greatly by extramuscular myofascial force transmission.
Such effects have important implications for the outcome of surgery performed to improve impeded function since muscle in
vivo is not isolated both anatomically and mechanically

Denitrification likely catalyzed by endobionts in an allogromiid foraminifer

The process of denitrification (conversion of nitrate to gaseous compounds, including N2) removes bioavailable nitrogen, particularly in marine sediments, making it a key factor in the marine nitrogen budget. Benthic foraminifera reportedly perform complete denitrification, a process previously considered nearly exclusively performed by bacteria and archaea. If the ability to denitrify is widespread among these diverse and abundant protists, a paradigm shift is required for biogeochemistry and marine microbial ecology. However, to date, the mechanisms of foraminiferal denitrification are unclear and it is possible that the ability to perform complete denitrification is due to symbiont metabolism in some foraminiferal species. Using sequence analysis and GeneFISH, we show that for a symbiont-bearing foraminifer, the potential for denitrification resides in the endobionts. Results also identify the endobionts as denitrifying pseudomonads and show that the allogromiid accumulates nitrate intracellularly, presumably for use in denitrification. Endobionts have been observed within many foraminiferal species, and in the case of associations with denitrifying bacteria, may provide fitness for survival in anoxic conditions. The Annotation, Mapping, Expression and Network (AMEN) suite of tools for molecular systems biology
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>High-throughput genome biological experiments yield large and multifaceted datasets that require flexible and user-friendly analysis tools to facilitate their interpretation by life scientists. Many solutions currently exist, but they are often limited to specific steps in the complex process of data management and analysis and some require extensive informatics skills to be installed and run efficiently.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We developed the Annotation, Mapping, Expression and Network (AMEN) software as a stand-alone, unified suite of tools that enables biological and medical researchers with basic bioinformatics training to manage and explore genome annotation, chromosomal mapping, protein-protein interaction, expression profiling and proteomics data. The current version provides modules for (i) uploading and pre-processing data from microarray expression profiling experiments, (ii) detecting groups of significantly co-expressed genes, and (iii) searching for enrichment of functional annotations within those groups. Moreover, the user interface is designed to simultaneously visualize several types of data such as protein-protein interaction networks in conjunction with expression profiles and cellular co-localization patterns. We have successfully applied the program to interpret expression profiling data from budding yeast, rodents and human.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>AMEN is an innovative solution for molecular systems biological data analysis freely available under the GNU license. The program is available via a website at the Sourceforge portal which includes a user guide with concrete examples, links to external databases and helpful comments to implement additional functionalities. We emphasize that AMEN will continue to be developed and maintained by our laboratory because it has proven to be extremely useful for our genome biological research program.</p
The regional differences in prevalence, medical expenditures and risk factors for injury in Taiwanese teenagers
BACKGROUND: Injury is the leading cause of death in teenagers worldwide. In Taiwan, people in mountainous areas have a 4 to 8 years shorter life span than the general population. Injury among teenagers is likely a major cause. The objective of this study was to investigate the regional differences in the prevalence, the risk factors, and the medical expenditures for injury among Taiwanese teenagers. METHOD: An equal probability national sample was used. In addition, representative samples from mountainous areas and offshore islands were used. Only those who aged between 12 and 21 years, and signed the consent form permitting us to link their National Health Insurance (NHI) claim data were included in the analysis. Injury-related visits and expenditures in outpatient services were extracted from the NHI data. Logistic regression was used to examine the factors associated with injury. For those who had injury related outpatient visits, mixed model was used to examine the factors associated with medical expenditures accounting for multiple visits by the same individual. RESULTS: The prevalence of nonfatal injury was around 30% of teenagers in Taiwan. It was 10% higher in mountainous areas. Factors associated with injury were those who lived in mountainous areas (adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 1.7; 95%; confidence interval [CI]: 1.3–2.3), males (OR: 1.3; 95%; CI: 1.1–1.6), older teens (18–21 years old), and those with risk behavior were positively associated with injury. These factors were also associated with the number of injury-related outpatient visits. However, teenagers in mountainous areas did not spend more on medical care than those who lived in metropolitan Taiwan. CONCLUSION: Around 30% of the teenagers were injured in a year, not including the dead. Each of the injured spent at least 851.4NTD (~27USD) for outpatient visits. The scope of the problem was not trivial. Hazardous environments and high-risk behaviors were the universal causes. In remote areas, lack of medical resources was another possibility. Empowering local people to design prevention programs according to their needs is recommended
