UK regional scale modelling of natural geohazards and climate change
For over 10 years, the British Geological Survey (BGS) has been investigating geotechnical and
mineralogical factors controlling volume change behaviour of UK clay soils and mudrocks. A
strong understanding of the relationship between these parameters and the clays' shrink-swell
properties has been developed. More recently, partly resulting from concerns of users of this
knowledge, a study of the relationships between climate change and shrink-swell behaviour
over the last 30 years has been carried out. Information on subsidence insurance claims has been
provided by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the UK Meteorological Office (UKMO)
historical climate station data has also been utilised. This is being combined with the
BGS's GeoSure national geohazard data, to build a preliminary GIS model to provide an understanding
of the susceptibility of the Tertiary London Clay to climate change. This paper summarises
the data analysis and identifies future work for model construction and refinement
Sick of work or too sick to work? Evidence on health shocks and early retirement from the BHPS
We follow individuals as they retire using discrete-time hazard models applied to a stock sample from 12 waves of the British Household Panel Survey. Results confirm that health shocks are a determinant of retirement age and are quantitatively more important than pension entitlement. This is the case for both men and women and is observed for both a measure of health limitations and a measure of latent health status obtained from a generalized ordered probit model. Further, our results provide evidence that, for women, the health status of their partner impacts on their retirement decisions; an effect that is not evident for men
Guided self-help cognitive behavioral intervention for VoicEs (GiVE): study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial
Background: Cognitive behavior therapy for psychosis (CBTp) is an effective intervention for people who hear distressing voices (auditory hallucinations). However, there continues to be a problem of poor access to CBTp. Constraints on health care funding require this problem to be addressed without a substantial increase in funding. One solution is to develop guided self-help forms of CBTp to improve access, and a symptom-specific focus on, for example, distressing voices (auditory verbal hallucinations) has the potential to enhance effectiveness. We term this cognitive behavior therapy for distressing voices (CBTv).
Methods/design: This trial is an external pilot randomized controlled trial comparing the effects of 12 week guided self-help CBTv (with eight therapist support sessions) with a wait list control condition. Informed consent will be obtained from each participant. Half of the 30 participants will be randomized to receive guided self-help CBTv immediately; the remaining half will receive the intervention after a 12-week delay. All participants will continue with their usual treatment throughout the study. Outcomes will be assessed using questionnaires completed at baseline and 12 weeks postrandomization. Interviews will be offered to all those who receive therapy immediately to explore their experiences with the intervention.
Discussion: The outcomes of this trial, both quantitative and qualitative, will inform the design of a definitive randomized controlled trial of guided self-help CBTv. If this intervention is effective, it could help to increase access to CBT for those who hear distressing voices
Root calcrete formation on Quaternary karstic surfaces of Grand Cayman
The rugged karst terrain developed on the dolostones of the Miocene Cayman Formation (Fm) on Grand Cayman includes numerous large cavities that formed through the activity of tree roots. The surfaces of those cavities are coated with laminated calcrete crusts up to 8 cm thick that are formed of an alteration zone, an accretionary zone, and final infill of the cavities. These crusts are formed of various laminae, including dolostone with root traces, alveolar septal structures, peloids, micritic and microsparitic laminae, micrite with bioclasts, and pisoliths. Features such as microborings, spores, needle-fiber calcite and micro-rods are common in all parts of the calcrete crust. Calcrete formation was initiated as the roots and associated microorganisms generated the cavities. Later on trapping and binding processes and organically induced precipitation of carbonate allowed the formation of the accretionary (mostly laminar) part of the calcrete. The last phases of crust formation took place when ponded waters filled the cavities. The calcrete crusts developed on the Cayman Formation dolostones record a very specific setting for calcrete formation and constitute a good example of non-horizontal calcrete crusts
Decoherence of geometric phase gates
We consider the effects of certain forms of decoherence applied to both
adiabatic and non-adiabatic geometric phase quantum gates. For a single qubit
we illustrate path-dependent sensitivity to anisotropic noise and for two
qubits we quantify the loss of entanglement as a function of decoherence.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
The prevalence of, and factors associated with, paying for sex among men resident in Britain: findings from the third national survey of sexual attitudes and lifestyles (Natsal-3)
Objectives Men who pay for sex (MPS) are considered a bridging population for sexually transmitted infections (STI). However, the extent, characteristics and role of MPS in transmission is poorly understood. We investigate these questions using data from Britain's third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3).
Methods We performed complex survey analyses of data from 6293 men aged 16–74 years resident in Britain who completed Natsal-3, a probability sample survey undertaken during 2010–2012, using computer-assisted personal interviewing and computer-assisted self-interview.
Results 11.0% (95% CI10.1% to 11.9%) of all men reported ever paying for sex. Among MPS, 18.4% (95% CI 18.2% to 18.7%) of their lifetime sexual partners were paid. 3.6% (95% CI 3.1% to 4.2%) of men had paid for sex in the past 5 years. Partners of MPS constitute 14.7% of all reported partners and MPS report 15.6% of all reported STI diagnoses in the past 5 years. Paying for sex in the past 5 years was strongly associated with reporting larger numbers of sexual partners (adjusted OR, AOR for 5+ partners, past 5 years, 31.50, 95% CI 18.69 to 53.09). After adjusting for partner numbers, paying for sex remained strongly associated with reporting new foreign partners outside the UK (AOR 7.96; 95% CI 4.97 to 12.73) and STI diagnosis/es (AOR 2.34; 95% CI 1.44 to 3.81), all in the past 5 years. Among men ever paying for sex, 62.6% (95% CI 58.3% to 66.8%) reported paying for sex outside the UK, most often in Europe and Asia.
Conclusions MPS in Britain remain at greater risk of STI acquisition and onward transmission than men who do not. They report high numbers of partners, but the minority are paid partners. They are an important core group in STI transmission
Foods and diets of communities involved in inland aquaculture in Malaita Province, Solomon Islands
Solomon Islands has a population of just over half a million people, most of whom are rural-based subsistence farmers and fishers who rely heavily on fish as their main animal-source food and for income. The nation is one of the Pacific Island Counties and Territories; future shortfalls in fish production are projected to be serious, and government policy identifies inland aquaculture development as one of the options to meet future demand for fish. In Solomon Islands, inland aquaculture has also been identified as a way to improve ood and nutrition security for people with poor access to marine fish. This report undertaken by a Worldfish study under the CGIAR Research Program on Aquatic Agricultural Systems explores the e potential role of land-based aquaculture of Mozambique tilapia in Solomon Islands as it relates to household food and nutrition security. This nutrition survey aimed to benchmark the foods and diets of households newly involved in small homestead tilapia ponds and their neighboring households in the central region of Malaita, the most populous island of all the provinces in Solomon Islands. Green Functions for the Wrong-Sign Quartic
It has been shown that the Schwinger-Dyson equations for non-Hermitian
theories implicitly include the Hilbert-space metric. Approximate Green
functions for such theories may thus be obtained, without having to evaluate
the metric explicitly, by truncation of the equations. Such a calculation has
recently been carried out for various -symmetric theories, in both quantum
mechanics and quantum field theory, including the wrong-sign quartic
oscillator. For this particular theory the metric is known in closed form,
making possible an independent check of these approximate results. We do so by
numerically evaluating the ground-state wave-function for the equivalent
Hermitian Hamiltonian and using this wave-function, in conjunction with the
metric operator, to calculate the one- and two-point Green functions. We find
that the Green functions evaluated by lowest-order truncation of the
Schwinger-Dyson equations are already accurate at the (6-8)% level. This
provides a strong justification for the method and a motivation for its
extension to higher order and to higher dimensions, where the calculation of
the metric is extremely difficult
How to Stop (Worrying and Love) the Bubble: Boundary Changing Solutions
We discover that a class of bubbles of nothing are embedded as time dependent
scaling limits of previous spacelike-brane solutions. With the right initial
conditions, a near-bubble solution can relax its expansion and open the compact
circle. Thermodynamics of the new class of solutions is discussed and the
relationships between brane/flux transitions, tachyon condensation and
imaginary D-branes are outlined. Finally, a related class of simultaneous

Recombination of Intersecting D-branes by Local Tachyon Condensation
We provide a simple low energy description of recombination of intersecting
D-branes using super Yang-Mills theory. The recombination is realized by
condensation of an off-diagonal tachyonic fluctuation localized at the
intersecting point. The recombination process is equivalent to brane-antibrane
annihilation, thus our result confirms Sen's conjecture on tachyon
condensation, although we work in the super Yang-Mills theory whose energy
scale is much lower than alpha'. We also discuss the decay width of
