Cleaning of a model food soil from horizontal plates by a moving vertical water jet
The removal of layers of a model food soil (dried Xanthan gum containing fluorescent ZnS particles) by a vertical water jet impinging normally on to the plate, generated by a solid stream nozzle which moves across the plate was reported by Köhler et al. (2014). Their experiments investigated nozzle pressures from 0.5-2.0 barg; nozzle diameters from 0.84-2.66 mm, nozzle-layer separation of 20 mm, and nozzle traverse speeds of 2.1-126 mm s-1. The flow parameters and separation are smaller than those typical of industrial jet cleaning operations.
The model developed by Wilson et al. (2014; Chem. Eng. Sci., 109, 183–196) for cleaning of similar layers by a stationary impinging jet was modified to describe the case of moving nozzle. This new model predicted the trends observed in the experiments, and analysis of the data yielded a similar cleaning rate constant to that obtained previously for cleaning of similar layers by stationary jets. The model predicted a non-circular cleaning front which matched that extracted from new experiments in which the flow was interrupted in order to capture this feature. The model allowed the cleaning performance indicators suggested by Köhler et al. (2014) to be expressed quantitatively: these indicated that higher nozzle traverse speeds give increased cleaning time, energy and liquid consumption performance.The work at TU Dresden was funded by the European Union and the Free State of Saxony as part of project SAB 080951793. Similarity solutions for unsteady shear-stress-driven flow of Newtonian and power-law fluids : slender rivulets and dry patches
Unsteady flow of a thin film of a Newtonian fluid or a non-Newtonian power-law fluid with power-law index N driven by a constant shear stress applied at the free surface, on a plane inclined at an angle α to the horizontal, is considered. Unsteady similarity solutions representing flow of slender rivulets and flow around slender dry patches are obtained. Specifically, solutions are obtained for converging sessile rivulets (0 < α < π/2) and converging dry patches in a pendent film (π/2 < α < π), as well as for diverging pendent rivulets and diverging dry patches in a sessile film. These solutions predict that at any time t, the rivulet and dry patch widen or narrow according to |x|3/2, and the film thickens or thins according to |x|, where x denotes distance down the plane, and that at any station x, the rivulet and dry patch widen or narrow like |t|−1, and the film thickens or thins like |t|−1, independent of N
Male Flat Jockeys Do Not Display Deteriorations in Bone Density or Resting Metabolic Rate in Accordance With Race Riding Experience: Implications for RED-S.
Despite consistent reports of poor bone health in male jockeys, it is not yet known if this is a consequence of low energy availability or lack of an osteogenic stimulus. Given the rationale that low energy availability is a contributing factor in low bone health, we tested the hypothesis that both hip and lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) should progressively worsen in accordance with the years of riding. In a cross-sectional design, male apprentice (n=17) and senior (n=14) jockeys (matched for body mass and fat free mass) were assessed for hip and lumbar spine BMD as well as both measured and predicted resting metabolic rate (RMR). Despite differences (P0.05) in hip (-0.9 ± 1.1 v -0.8 ± 0.7) and lumbar Z-scores (-1.3 ± 1.4 v -1.5 ± 1) or measured RMR (1459 ± 160 v 1500 ± 165 kcal.d-1) between apprentices and senior jockeys, respectively. Additionally, years of race riding did not demonstrate any significant correlations (P>0.05) with either hip or lumbar spine BMD. Measured RMR was also not different (P>0.05) from predicted RMR in either apprentice (1520 ± 44 kcal.d-1) or senior jockeys (1505 ± 70 kcal.d-1). When considered with previously published data examining under-reporting of energy intake and direct assessments of energy expenditure, we suggest that low BMD in jockeys is not due to low energy availability per se, but rather, the lack of an osteogenic stimulus associated with riding

Correlation functions quantify super-resolution images and estimate apparent clustering due to over-counting
We present an analytical method to quantify clustering in super-resolution
localization images of static surfaces in two dimensions. The method also
describes how over-counting of labeled molecules contributes to apparent
self-clustering and how the effective lateral resolution of an image can be
determined. This treatment applies to clustering of proteins and lipids in
membranes, where there is significant interest in using super-resolution
localization techniques to probe membrane heterogeneity. When images are
quantified using pair correlation functions, the magnitude of apparent
clustering due to over-counting will vary inversely with the surface density of
labeled molecules and does not depend on the number of times an average
molecule is counted. Over-counting does not yield apparent co-clustering in
double label experiments when pair cross-correlation functions are measured. We
apply our analytical method to quantify the distribution of the IgE receptor
(Fc{\epsilon}RI) on the plasma membranes of chemically fixed RBL-2H3 mast cells
from images acquired using stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM)
and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We find that apparent clustering of
labeled IgE bound to Fc{\epsilon}RI detected with both methods arises from
over-counting of individual complexes. Thus our results indicate that these
receptors are randomly distributed within the resolution and sensitivity limits

Spin Calogero Particles and Bispectral Solutions of the Matrix KP Hierarchy
Pairs of matrices whose commutator differ from the identity by a
matrix of rank are used to construct bispectral differential operators with
matrix coefficients satisfying the Lax equations of the Matrix KP
hierarchy. Moreover, the bispectral involution on these operators has dynamical
significance for the spin Calogero particles system whose phase space such
pairs represent. In the case , this reproduces well-known results of
Wilson and others from the 1990's relating (spinless) Calogero-Moser systems to
the bispectrality of (scalar) differential operators. This new class of pairs
of bispectral matrix differential operators is different than
those previously studied in that acts from the left, but from the
right on a common eigenmatrix.Comment: 16 page
Application of the speed-duration relationship to normalize the intensity of high-intensity interval training
The tolerable duration of continuous high-intensity exercise is determined by the hyperbolic Speed-tolerable duration (S-tLIM) relationship. However, application of the S-tLIM relationship to normalize the intensity of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has yet to be considered, with this the aim of present study. Subjects completed a ramp-incremental test, and series of 4 constant-speed tests to determine the S-tLIM relationship. A sub-group of subjects (n = 8) then repeated 4 min bouts of exercise at the speeds predicted to induce intolerance at 4 min (WR4), 6 min (WR6) and 8 min (WR8), interspersed with bouts of 4 min recovery, to the point of exercise intolerance (fixed WR HIIT) on different days, with the aim of establishing the work rate that could be sustained for 960 s (i.e. 4×4 min). A sub-group of subjects (n = 6) also completed 4 bouts of exercise interspersed with 4 min recovery, with each bout continued to the point of exercise intolerance (maximal HIIT) to determine the appropriate protocol for maximizing the amount of high-intensity work that can be completed during 4×4 min HIIT. For fixed WR HIIT tLIM of HIIT sessions was 399±81 s for WR4, 892±181 s for WR6 and 1517±346 s for WR8, with total exercise durations all significantly different from each other (P<0.050). For maximal HIIT, there was no difference in tLIM of each of the 4 bouts (Bout 1: 229±27 s; Bout 2: 262±37 s; Bout 3: 235±49 s; Bout 4: 235±53 s; P>0.050). However, there was significantly less high-intensity work completed during bouts 2 (153.5±40. 9 m), 3 (136.9±38.9 m), and 4 (136.7±39.3 m), compared with bout 1 (264.9±58.7 m; P>0.050). These data establish that WR6 provides the appropriate work rate to normalize the intensity of HIIT between subjects. Maximal HIIT provides a protocol which allows the relative contribution of the work rate profile to physiological adaptations to be considered during alternative intensity-matched HIIT protocols
Impact of inhaled corticosteroids on growth in children with asthma: systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Long-term inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) may reduce growth velocity and final height of children with asthma. We aimed to evaluate the association between ICS use of >12 months and growth. Methods: We initially searched MEDLINE and EMBASE in July 2013, followed by a PubMed search updated to December 2014. We selected RCTs and controlled observational studies of ICS use in patients with asthma. We conducted random effects meta-analysis of mean differences in growth velocity (cm/year) or final height (cm) between groups. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. Results: We found 23 relevant studies (twenty RCTs and three observational studies) after screening 1882 hits. Meta-analysis of 16 RCTs showed that ICS use significantly reduced growth velocity at one year follow-up (mean difference -0.48 cm/year (95% CI -0.66 to -0.29)). There was evidence of a dose-response effect in three RCTs. Final adult height showed a mean reduction of -1.20 cm (95% CI -1.90 cm to -0.50 cm) with budesonide versus placebo in a high quality RCT. Meta-analysis of two lower quality observational studies revealed uncertainty in the association between ICS use and final adult height, pooled mean difference -0.85 cm (95% CI -3.35 to 1.65). Conclusion: Use of ICS for >12 months in children with asthma has a limited impact on annual growth velocity. In ICS users, there is a slight reduction of about a centimeter in final adult height, which when interpreted in the context of average adult height in England (175 cm for men and 161 cm for women), represents a 0.7% reduction compared to non-ICS users
