    On-Chip Cavity Optomechanical Coupling

    On-chip cavity optomechanics, in which strong co-localization of light and mechanical motion is engineered, relies on efficient coupling of light both into and out of the on-chip optical resonator. Here we detail our particular style of tapered and dimpled optical fibers, pioneered by the Painter group at Caltech, which are a versatile and reliable solution to efficient on-chip coupling. First, a brief overview of tapered, single mode fibers is presented, in which the single mode cutoff diameter is highlighted. The apparatus used to create a dimpled tapered fiber is then described, followed by a comprehensive account of the procedure by which a dimpled tapered fiber is produced and mounted in our system. The custom-built optical access vacuum chambers in which our on-chip optomechanical measurements are performed are then discussed. Finally, the process by which our optomechanical devices are fabricated and the method by which we explore their optical and mechanical properties is explained. It is our expectation that this manuscript will enable the novice to develop advanced optomechanical experiments.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figure

    A powerful intervention: general practitioners' use of sickness certification in depression

    <b>Background</b> Depression is frequently cited as the reason for sickness absence, and it is estimated that sickness certificates are issued in one third of consultations for depression. Previous research has considered GP views of sickness certification but not specifically in relation to depression. This study aimed to explore GPs views of sickness certification in relation to depression.<p></p> <b>Methods</b> A purposive sample of GP practices across Scotland was selected to reflect variations in levels of incapacity claimants and antidepressant prescribing. Qualitative interviews were carried out between 2008 and 2009.<p></p> <b>Results</b> A total of 30 GPs were interviewed. A number of common themes emerged including the perceived importance of GP advocacy on behalf of their patients, the tensions between stakeholders involved in the sickness certification system, the need to respond flexibly to patients who present with depression and the therapeutic nature of time away from work as well as the benefits of work. GPs reported that most patients with depression returned to work after a short period of absence and that it was often difficult to predict which patients would struggle to return to work.<p></p> <b>Conclusions</b> GPs reported that dealing with sickness certification and depression presents distinct challenges. Sickness certificates are often viewed as powerful interventions, the effectiveness of time away from work for those with depression should be subject to robust enquiry

    The relationship between quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30) and survival in patients with gastro-oesopohageal cancer

    It remains unclear whether any aspect of quality of life has a role in predicting survival in an unselected cohort of patients with gastro-oesophageal cancer. Therefore the aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30), clinico-pathological characteristics and survival in patients with gastro-oesophageal cancer. Patients presenting with gastric or oesophageal cancer, staged using the UICC tumour node metastasis (TNM) classification and who received either potentially curative surgery or palliative treatment between November 1997 and December 2002 (n=152) participated in a quality of life study, using the EORTC QLQ-C30 core questionnaire. On univariate analysis, age (P < 0.01), tumour length (P < 0.0001), TNM stage (P<0.0001), weight loss (P<0.0001), dysphagia score (P<0.001), performance status (P<0.1) and treatment (P<0.0001) were significantly associated with cancer-specific survival. EORTC QLQ-C30, physical functioning (P<0.0001), role functioning (P<0.001), cognitive functioning (P<0.01), social functioning (P<0.0001), global quality of life (P<0.0001), fatigue (P<0.0001), nausea/vomiting (P<0.01), pain (P<0.001), dyspnoea (P<0.0001), appetite loss (P<0.0001) and constipation (P<0.05) were also significantly associated with cancer-specific survival. On multivariate survival analysis, tumour stage (P<0.0001), treatment (P<0.001) and appetite loss (P<0.0001) were significant independent predictors of cancer-specific survival. The present study highlights the importance of quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30) measures, in particular appetite loss, as a prognostic factor in these patients

    Functional central limit theorems for vicious walkers

    We consider the diffusion scaling limit of the vicious walker model that is a system of nonintersecting random walks. We prove a functional central limit theorem for the model and derive two types of nonintersecting Brownian motions, in which the nonintersecting condition is imposed in a finite time interval (0,T](0,T] for the first type and in an infinite time interval (0,)(0,\infty) for the second type, respectively. The limit process of the first type is a temporally inhomogeneous diffusion, and that of the second type is a temporally homogeneous diffusion that is identified with a Dyson's model of Brownian motions studied in the random matrix theory. We show that these two types of processes are related to each other by a multi-dimensional generalization of Imhof's relation, whose original form relates the Brownian meander and the three-dimensional Bessel process.     The Study of Goldstone Modes in ν\nu=2 Bilayer Quantum Hall Systems

    At the filling factor ν\nu=2, the bilayer quantum Hall system has three phases, the spin-ferromagnet phase, the spin singlet phase and the canted antiferromagnet (CAF) phase, depending on the relative strength between the Zeeman energy and interlayer tunneling energy. We present a systematic method to derive the effective Hamiltonian for the Goldstone modes in these three phases. We then investigate the dispersion relations and the coherence lengths of the Goldstone modes. To explore a possible emergence of the interlayer phase coherence, we analyze the dispersion relations in the zero tunneling energy limit.     Search for the Neutron Decay n\rightarrow X+γ\gamma where X is a dark matter particle

    In a recent paper submitted to Physical Review Letters, Fornal and Grinstein have suggested that the discrepancy between two different methods of neutron lifetime measurements, the beam and bottle methods can be explained by a previously unobserved dark matter decay mode, n\rightarrow X+γ\gamma where X is a dark matter particle. We have performed a search for this decay mode over the allowed range of energies of the monoenergetic gamma ray for X to be a dark matter particle. We exclude the possibility of a sufficiently strong branch to explain the lifetime discrepancy with greater than 4 sigma confidence.Comment: 6 pages 3 figure

    A limit model for thermoelectric equations

    We analyze the asymptotic behavior corresponding to the arbitrary high conductivity of the heat in the thermoelectric devices. This work deals with a steady-state multidimensional thermistor problem, considering the Joule effect and both spatial and temperature dependent transport coefficients under some real boundary conditions in accordance with the Seebeck-Peltier-Thomson cross-effects. Our first purpose is that the existence of a weak solution holds true under minimal assumptions on the data, as in particular nonsmooth domains. Two existence results are studied under different assumptions on the electrical conductivity. Their proofs are based on a fixed point argument, compactness methods, and existence and regularity theory for elliptic scalar equations. The second purpose is to show the existence of a limit model illustrating the asymptotic situation.Comment: 20 page

    Theory of the Quantum Hall Smectic Phase II: Microscopic Theory

    We present a microscopic derivation of the hydrodynamic theory of the Quantum Hall smectic or stripe phase of a two-dimensional electron gas in a large magnetic field. The effective action of the low energy is derived here from a microscopic picture by integrating out high energy excitations with a scale of the order the cyclotron energy.The remaining low-energy theory can be expressed in terms of two canonically conjugate sets of degrees of freedom: the displacement field, that describes the fluctuations of the shapes of the stripes, and the local charge fluctuations on each stripe.Comment: 20 pages, RevTex, 3 figures, second part of cond-mat/0105448 New and improved Introduction.
