    Investigation of surface water behavior during glaze ice accretion

    A series of experimental investigations that focused on isolating the primary factors that control the behavior of unfrozen surface water during glaze ice accretion were conducted. Detailed microvideo observations were made of glaze ice accretions on 2.54 cm diam cylinders in a closed-loop refrigerated wind tunnel. Distinct zones of surface water behavior were observed; a smooth wet zone in the stagnation region with a uniform water film, a rough zone where surface tension effects caused coalescence of surface water into stationary beads, and a zone where surface water ran back as rivulets. The location of the transition from the smooth to the rough zone was found to migrate towards the stagnation point with time. Comparative tests were conducted to study the effect of the substrate thermal and roughness properties on ice accretion. The importance of surface water behavior was evaluated by the addition of a surface tension reducing agent to the icing tunnel water supply, which significantly altered the accreted glaze ice shape. Measurements were made to determine the contact angle behavior of water droplets on ice.     Continued DDT Persistence in Mississippi River Delta Streams: A Case Study

    Fish samples representative of several trophic levels were taken from the Wolf and Loosahatchie Rivers of western Tennessee during the early 1980s. Results indicate that DDT, with metabolites DDD and DDE, remains common in fish tissues in these areas and approaches the levels recommended as maxima for human consumption by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Samples of top carnivores and forage fishes, particularly the gizzard shad, Dorosoma cepedlanum, commonly exceeded 500 ppb DDE. The results are discussed in light of sediment disturbing activities

    Knowledge structure representation and automated updates in intelligent information management systems

    A continuing effort to apply rapid prototyping and Artificial Intelligence techniques to problems associated with projected Space Station-era information management systems is examined. In particular, timely updating of the various databases and knowledge structures within the proposed intelligent information management system (IIMS) is critical to support decision making processes. Because of the significantly large amounts of data entering the IIMS on a daily basis, information updates will need to be automatically performed with some systems requiring that data be incorporated and made available to users within a few hours. Meeting these demands depends first, on the design and implementation of information structures that are easily modified and expanded, and second, on the incorporation of intelligent automated update techniques that will allow meaningful information relationships to be established. Potential techniques are studied for developing such an automated update capability and IIMS update requirements are examined in light of results obtained from the IIMS prototyping effort

    Unrepresentative information - The case of newspaper reporting on campaign finance

    This article examines evidence of sampling or statistical bias in newspaper reporting on campaign finance. We compile all stories from the five largest circulation newspapers in the United States that mention a dollar amount for campaign expenditures, contributions, or receipts from 1996 to 2000. We compare these figures to those recorded by the Federal Election Commission (FEC). The average figures reported in newspapers exceed the figures from the FEC by as much as eightfold. Press reports also focus excessively on corporate contributions and soft money, rather than on the more common types of donors-individual-and types of contributions-hard money. We further find that these biases are reflected in public perceptions of money in elections. Survey respondents overstate the amount of money raised and the share from different groups by roughly the amount found in newspapers, and better-educated people (those most likely to read newspapers) showed the greatest discrepancy between their beliefs and the facts

    Radiative properties of cirrus clouds inferred from broadband measurements during FIRE

    It is well known that clouds are significant modulators of weather and climate because of their effects on the radiation field and thus on the energy balance of the earth atmosphere system. As a result, the accurate prediction of weather and climate depends to a significant degree on the accuracy with which cloud radiation interactions can be described. The broadband radiative and microphysical properties of five cirrus cloud systems are reported, as observed from the NCAR Sabreliner during the FIRE first Cirrus IFO, in order to better understand cirrus cloud-radiation interactions. A broadband infrared (BBIR) radiative transfer model is used to deduce BBIR absorption coefficients in order to assess the impact of the cirrus clouds on infrared radiation. The relationships of these absorption coefficients to temperature and microphysical characteristics are explored
