Among the different types of fuel cell technologies, direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are the most suitable for mobile and portable electronic applications. The development of cost-effective, active, and stable catalysts, able to substitute Pt or allow reducing the amount of it in low temperature fuel cell anodes is still in progress. In our previous works [1, 2] it has been shown that the graphene supported platinum-cobalt catalysts prepared by means of microwave synthesis enhance electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of borohydride and ethanol in an alkaline medium and are promising anode materials for direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs) and ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). In this study investigation of activity of the graphene supported platinum-cobalt catalysts with the different Pt:Co molar ratios, fabricated by the rapid microwave heating method, towards the electro-oxidation of methanol in an acidic medium is presented. The Pt-Co/GR catalysts with the Pt:Co molar ratios equal to 1:3, 1:6, 1:20, 1:50 and 1:60 were prepared by microwave-assisted heating of required amounts of Pt(IV), Co(II) and ethylene glycol at a temperature 170 oC for 30 min. For comparison, the graphene supported Pt catalyst was also prepared at 170 oC for 30 s. The Pt loading in the synthesized catalysts was near 0.1 mg Pt cm-2. The electrochemically active surface areas of Pt in the synthesized Pt/GR and Pt-Co/GR catalysts were determined from the cyclic voltammograms of the mentioned catalysts recorded in a deaerated 0.5 M H2SO4 solution at a sweep rate 50 mV s-1 by calculating the charge associated with hydrogen adsorption (220 µCcm-2) and are 0.7 cm2 for Pt/GR and 5.2, 2.9, 1.6, 1.0 and 0.5 cm2for the Pt-Co/GR catalysts with the Pt:Co molar ratios equal to 1:3, 1:6, 1:20, 1:50 and 1:60, respectively. Values of the electrochemically active surface areas of the investigated Pt-Co/GR catalysts are 1.4-7.5 times higher than those of the Pt/GR catalyst. Electrochemical properties of Pt-Co/GR were investigated towards the electro-oxidation of methanol in acidic medium by means of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry and compared with those of the bare graphene supported Pt catalyst. It has been determined that the Pt-Co/GR catalysts with the Pt:Co molar ratios equal to 1:3, 1:6, 1:20 exhibit an enhanced electrocatalytic performance for methanol electro-oxidation as compared with that of bare graphene supported platinum catalyst. Methanol oxidation current density values are ca. 2.1-3.2 times higher at the Pt-Co/GR catalysts with the above mention Pt:Co molar ratios than those at the Pt/GR catalyst. Highest electrocatalytic activity towards the electro-oxidation of methanol in acidic medium shows the graphene supported Pt-Co catalyst with the Pt:Co molar ratios equal to 1:3 and 1:6 as compared with that of catalysts with higher Pt:Co molar ratios and Pt/GR. These results obtained show that the Pt-Co/GR catalysts with the different Pt:Co molar ratios could have promising future as catalysts for DMFC. References [1] L. Tamašauskaitë-Tamašiûnaitë, A. In this work graphene supported PtCo catalysts with the Pt:Co molar ratios 1:7 and 1:44 were fabricated by means of the rapid microwave heating method. The surface morphology, structure and composition of the synthesized catalysts were examined by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and inductively coupled optical emission spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic activity of the synthesized catalysts towards the oxidation of ethanol in an alkaline medium was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry and chrono-techniques. It has been determined that the graphene supported PtCo catalyst with a lower Pt:Co molar ratio 1:7 exhibits a higher electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation reaction of ethanol as compared with those at the graphene supported bare Pt, Co and PtCo catalysts with a higher Pt:Co molar ratio 1:44.</jats:p

Prognosis in hypertensives with acute myocardial infarction

OBJECTIVES: A previous history of hypertension is overrepresented among patients with ischaemic heart disease. The present study aims at describing the influence of a previous history of hypertension upon the prognosis among patients hospitalized due to acute myocardial infarction. DESIGN: Patients were followed for 1 year. Mortality and morbidity are described during hospitalization and after discharge from hospital. SETTING: Sahlgrenska Hospital, serving half of the area of Gothenburg in Sweden. PATIENTS: All patients admitted to Sahlgrenska Hospital during 21 months due to acute myocardial infarction regardless of age and whether they were admitted to the coronary care unit. RESULTS: Among all patients with confirmed acute myocardial infarction (n = 917) a previous history of hypertension was reported in 324 patients. Hypertensives more frequently had a previous history of acute myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, congestive heart failure and diabetes mellitus. Their mortality during hospitalization was similar to that in normotensives. However, the total mortality during 1 year of follow-up was 35% in hypertensives and 25% for normotensives (P < 0.01), and a previous history of hypertension was an independent risk indicator for death after discharge from hospital. Place and mode of death appeared similar in normotensives and hypertensives. Reinfarction was twice as common in hypertensives as in normotensives, and a previous history of hypertension was an independent risk indicator for reinfarction. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with acute myocardial infarction a previous history of hypertension indicates a poor prognosis, one-third of patients dying and one-quarter developing reinfarction during the first year after onset of acute myocardial infarction.</p

The search for cleaner energy sources is required to shift focus to the generation of energy from electrochemical systems, batteries, fuel cells, solar cells, and super capacitors, among others. In this study we report a simple approach for preparation of the graphene (GR) and carbon (C) supported manganese(IV) and cobalt(II/III) oxides using microwave-assisted synthesis. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods were used for the characterization of morphology, structure and composition of the prepared the graphene and carbon supported MnO2-Co3O4 nanocomposites. Electrochemical performance of the MnO2-Co3O4/GR and MnO2-Co3O4/C nanocomposites was evaluated using long life cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge. The MnO2-Co3O4/GR and MnO2-Co3O4/C nanocomposites which have different morphologies, have been prepared by microwave synthesis. It was found that the graphene supported MnO2-Co3O4 nanoparticles has significant influence on the electrochemical performance of composites electrodes compared with that of the carbon supported MnO2-Co3O4 nanoparticles. The maximum specific capacitance was achieved at the MnO2-Co3O4/GR electrode in the 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution at the scan rate of 10 mV s-1. After 1000 charge/discharge cycles at the scan rate 100 mV s-1 the capacitance of all the materials synthesized in this study remains over 94 %, suggesting great potential for supercapacitors. </jats:p
