Profiles of ageing in the South of Portugal: education and cognitive functioning in elderly persons living in institutionalized and community contexts

The region of the Algarve shows huge differences between the coastline where population in the urban areas grows, and the inland rural areas, in some cases very isolated, which frequently have high ageing indexes. This general scenario, with an elderly population with very different economic and social conditions, frames the ongoing PhD research designed as a cross-sectional study of an intentional sample of elderly persons. The basic theoretical framework departs from the perspective of developmental psychology of life-span and the model of selection, optimisation and compensation for optimal ageing (Baltes & Baltes, 1990; Freund & Baltes, 2002). The present study is a first step in the analysis of empirical data collected in the PhD sample (N=156; age range 65 to 97 years; M = 80.4 years; SD = 7.2 years). Its purpose is to assess the cognitive functioning of participants, screening for cognitive impairment and examine the relations between the cognitive status of the subjects and a number of selected variables including educational level, age, physical activity and living contexts of the subjects. We accessed the cognitive status of the participants with the Portuguese version of Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) finding a 10.3% prevalence of positive cases with cognitive impairment. The results also show significant relationships between the cognitive status accessed by the MMSE and educational level, professional qualification, age, living arrangement and activity level of the participants. The relationship verified between educational level and cognitive status of the participants was the largest correlation found in the study with the variability in educational level accounting for 44.8% of the variability in MMSE score. This results points in the same direction of several lines of research that corroborate the strong intercorrelation between education and cognitive functioning in old age

Herbivory drives kelp recruits into ‘hiding’ in a warm ocean climate

Assessing effects of herbivory across broad gradients of varying ocean climate conditions and over small spatial scales is crucial for understand- ing its influence on primary producers. Effects of her- bivory on the distribution and abundance of kelp re- cruits were examined experimentally at two regions under contrasting ocean climate. Specifically, the abundance and survivorship of kelp recruits and the abundance of macro-herbivores were compared be- tween a ‘cool’ and a ‘warm’ region in northern and central Portugal, respectively. In each region, the abundance of kelp recruits and the intensity of grazing were compared between habitats of different topography within reefs (open reef vs. crevices). Com- pared to the ‘warm’ region, the abundance of kelp re- cruits was 3.9 times greater in the ‘cool’ region, where 85% of recruits were found in open reef habitats. In contrast, 87% of recruits in the ‘warm’ region were re- stricted to crevices. The ‘warm’ region had 140 times greater abundances of sea urchins, 45 times more herbivorous fish and 4.1 times more grazing marks on kelp recruits than the ‘cool’ region. Grazing assays showed ca. 50 times higher rates of kelp biomass con- sumption, mainly by fishes, and zero survivorship of kelp recruits in the ‘warm’ relative to the ‘cool’ region. This study suggests both temperature and herbivores affect abundances of kelp recruits across latitudes, and demonstrates how herbivores affect their distri- bution at local scales, driving kelp recruits into ‘hiding’ in crevices under intense herbivory. Conse- quently, where net recruitment success is compro- mised by herbivory, the persistence of kelps will be contingent on availability of topographical refuges

Atypical Phenotype in Two Patients with LAMA2 Mutations

    Get PDF
Congenital muscular dystrophy type 1A is caused by mutations in the LAMA2 gene, which encodes the a2-chain of laminin. We report two patients with partial laminin-a2 deficiency and atypical phenotypes, one with almost exclusive central nervous system involvement (cognitive impairment and refractory epilepsy) and the second with marked cardiac dysfunction, rigid spine syndrome and limb-girdle weakness. Patients underwent clinical, histopathological, imaging and genetic studies. Both cases have two heterozygous LAMA2 variants sharing a potentially pathogenic missense mutation c.2461A>C (p.Thr821Pro) located in exon 18. Brain MRI was instrumental for the diagnosis, since muscular examination and motor achievements were normal in the first patient and there was a severe cardiac involvement in the second. The clinical phenotype of the patients is markedly different which could in part be explained by the different combination of mutations types (two missense versus a missense and a truncating mutation)

    Get PDF
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsInternationalization is an important challenge and companies should analyze and plan its strategy before proceed. My project will focus the internationalization plan of Ivity. Ivity is a branding company with entirely Portuguese capital structure. As a young small company Ivity has a low international experience but, due to the Portuguese market size, it is looking for internationalization opportunities. To elaborate the internationalization plan I started by an external analysis in order to understand branding industry in Portugal. In the internal analysis I studied Ivity’s competitive advantages, innovations, competitive situation and internationalization potential. Further, I developed an international scanning having in mind that the sector where Ivity’s competitive advantages and expertise could face better opportunities are the airlines industry. Due to the similarity of language, the recent growth, the early emerging and internationalization that increase marketing needs, I found Brazil as the country I should target and I analyze Brazilian market, focusing my attention in the competition and the potential customers. Finally I develop and propose an implementation plan with a timeline of resources and investment to support the operation aligned with the defined strategy

This study aims to analyze the sociocultural psychologies of scientific denialism of the present time, especially during the period of greatest intensity of COVID-19 (March 2020-May 2022). From the collective experiences lived in this period, the denial of scientific knowledge stands out as a worrying problem for society. To analyze this question, the theoretical contributions of Bauman (1997), Sagan (1996), Castells (1996) and Freire (1977) are used. It was concluded that Education, in particular, and the Human and Social Sciences, in general, need to assume a political and social commitment in the construction of a scientific culture as a way of minimizing the consequences of scientific denialism in history.
