Magnetic frustration and spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking in PdCrO2
In the triangular layered magnet PdCrO2 the intralayer magnetic interactions
are strong, however the lattice structure frustrates interlayer interactions.
In spite of this, long-range, 120 antiferromagnetic order condenses at
~K. We show here through neutron scattering measurements under
in-plane uniaxial stress and in-plane magnetic field that this occurs through a
spontaneous lifting of the three-fold rotational symmetry of the nonmagnetic
lattice, which relieves the interlayer frustration. We also show through
resistivity measurements that uniaxial stress can suppress thermal magnetic
disorder within the antiferromagnetic phase.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
The use of the arts to encourage reflection in the dental professions — A commentary
Reflective practice is viewed internationally as an important activity within the dental professions and one which the General Dental Council expects to be part of all dental technician programmes in the United Kingdom (UK), irrespective of academic level. Informal discussions with colleagues delivering dental technology in UK higher education institutions agree that reflective practice is an important aspect of the curriculum, and learning is facilitated and assessed using various methods, for example, an online portfolio. Anecdotally, many of the current methods are shown to be ineffective, with up to fifty percent of students not meeting the reflective component. In the dental professions, consideration needs to be given to the use of creative methods to support reflective practice, in order to engage learners and contribute to the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes in this student group
A new crystal: Layer-structured rhombohedral In3Se4
A new layer-structured rhombohedral In3Se4 crystal was synthesized by a facile and mild solvothermal method. Detailed structural and chemical characterizations using transmission electron microscopy, coupled with synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis and Rietveld refinement, indicate that In3Se4 crystallizes in a layered rhombohedral structure with lattice parameters of a = 3.964 ± 0.002 Å and c = 39.59 ± 0.02 Å, a space group of R3m, and with a layer composition of Se-In-Se-In-Se-In-Se. The theoretical modeling and experimental measurements indicate that the In3Se4 is a self-doped n-type semiconductor. Bilateral symmetry breaking in a nonlinear Fabry-Perot cavity exhibiting optical tristability
We show the existence of a region in the parameter space that defines the
field dynamics in a Fabry-Perot cylindrical cavity, where three output stable
stationary states of the light are possible for a given localized incident
field. Two of these states do not preserve the bilateral (i.e. left-right)
symmetry of the entire system. These broken-symmetry states are the
high-transmission nonlinear modes of the system. We also discuss how to excite

How European Union Membership Can Undermine the Rule of Law in Emerging Democracies
The European Union views the spread of economic prosperity and rule of law to countries emerging from dictatorship as among its primary goals when considering countries as candidates for membership. Existing literature often suggests that EU membership confers significant benefits on the accession countries, and these countries are willing to undergo costly and difficult reforms to reap these benefits. Through strict membership conditions, member states force accession countries to commit to democracy. Drawing on theoretical work in the fields of law, politics, and economics, this article reassesses the conventional wisdom. It argues that, under certain conditions, the reforms required of would-be members could have the perverse effect of undermining the establishment of legitimate law in transitional democracies. Using an agent-based model, the article elucidates a theory in which placing laws on the books around which no societal consensus exists can create perverse incentives for citizens and government officials and may lead to an erosion of the rule of law
Coalescent-based species delimitation in the sand lizards of the Liolaemus wiegmannii complex (Squamata: Liolaemidae)
Coalescent-based algorithms coupled with the access to genome-wide data have become powerful tools forassessing questions on recent or rapid diversification, as well as delineating species boundaries in the absence of reciprocal monophyly. In southern South America, the diversification of Liolaemus lizards during the Pleistocene is well documented and has been attributed to the climatic changes that characterized this recent period of time. Past climatic changes had harsh effects at extreme latitudes, including Patagonia, but habitat changes at intermediate latitudes of South America have also been recorded, including expansion of sand fields over northern Patagonia and Pampas). In this work, we apply a coalescent-based approach to study the diversification of the Liolaemus wiegmannii species complex, a morphologically conservative clade that inhabits sandy soils across northwest and south-central Argentina, and the south shores of Uruguay. Using four standard sequence markers (mitochondrial DNA and three nuclear loci) along with ddRADseq data we inferred species limits and a time calibrated species tree for the L. wiegmannii complex in order to evaluate the influence of Quaternary sand expansion/retraction cycles on diversification. We also evaluated the evolutionary independence of the recently described L. gardeli and inferred its phylogenetic position relative to L. wiegmannii. We find strong evidence for six allopatric candidate species within L. wiegmannii, which diversified during the Pleistocene. The Great Patagonian Glaciation (∼1 million years before present) likely split the species complex into two main groups: one composed of lineages associated with sub-Andean sedimentary formations, and the other mostly related to sand fields in the Pampas and northern Patagonia. We hypothesize that early speciation within L. wiegmannii was influenced by the expansion of sand dunes throughout central Argentina and Pampas. Planning for Sustainability in Small Municipalities: The Influence of Interest Groups, Growth Patterns, and Institutional Characteristics
How and why small municipalities promote sustainability through planning efforts is poorly understood. We analyzed ordinances in 451 Maine municipalities and tested theories of policy adoption using regression analysis.We found that smaller communities do adopt programs that contribute to sustainability relevant to their scale and context. In line with the political market theory, we found that municipalities with strong environmental interests, higher growth, and more formal governments were more likely to adopt these policies. Consideration of context and capacity in planning for sustainability will help planners better identify and benefit from collaboration, training, and outreach opportunities
