On the molecular origin of high-pressure effects in nanoconfinement: The role of surface chemistry and roughness
Efficient HTTP based I/O on very large datasets for high performance computing with the libdavix library
Remote data access for data analysis in high performance computing is
commonly done with specialized data access protocols and storage systems. These
protocols are highly optimized for high throughput on very large datasets,
multi-streams, high availability, low latency and efficient parallel I/O. The
purpose of this paper is to describe how we have adapted a generic protocol,
the Hyper Text Transport Protocol (HTTP) to make it a competitive alternative
for high performance I/O and data analysis applications in a global computing
grid: the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid. In this work, we first analyze the
design differences between the HTTP protocol and the most common high
performance I/O protocols, pointing out the main performance weaknesses of
HTTP. Then, we describe in detail how we solved these issues. Our solutions
have been implemented in a toolkit called davix, available through several
recent Linux distributions. Finally, we describe the results of our benchmarks
where we compare the performance of davix against a HPC specific protocol for a

I discuss Benacerraf's epistemological challenge for realism about areas like mathematics, metalogic, and modality, and describe the pluralist response to it. I explain why normative pluralism is peculiarly unsatisfactory, and use this explanation to formulate a radicalization of Moore's Open Question Argument. According to the argument, the facts -- even the normative facts -- fail to settle the practical questions at the center of our normative lives. One lesson is that the concepts of realism and objectivity, which are widely identified, are actually in tension
Concurrent adaptation to opposing visual displacements during an alternating movement.
It has been suggested that, during tasks in which subjects are exposed to a visual rotation of cursor feedback, alternating bimanual adaptation to opposing rotations is as rapid as unimanual adaptation to a single rotation (Bock et al. in Exp Brain Res 162:513–519, 2005). However, that experiment did not test strict alternation of the limbs but short alternate blocks of trials. We have therefore tested adaptation under alternate left/right hand movement with opposing rotations. It was clear that the left and right hand, within the alternating conditions, learnt to adapt to the opposing displacements at a similar rate suggesting that two adaptive states were formed concurrently. We suggest that the separate limbs are used as contextual cues to switch between the relevant adaptive states. However, we found that during online correction the alternating conditions had a significantly slower rate of adaptation in comparison to the unimanual conditions. Control conditions indicate that the results are not directly due the alternation between limbs or to the constant switching of vision between the two eyes. The negative interference may originate from the requirement to dissociate the visual information of these two alternating displacements to allow online control of the two arms
Hybridization between wild and cultivated potato species in the Peruvian Andes and biosafety implications for deployment of GM potatoes
The nature and extent of past and current hybridization between cultivated potato and wild relatives in nature is of interest to crop evolutionists, taxonomists, breeders and recently to molecular biologists because of the possibilities of inverse gene flow in the deployment of genetically-modified (GM) crops. This research proves that natural hybridization occurs in areas of potato diversity in the Andes, the possibilities for survival of these new hybrids, and shows a possible way forward in case of GM potatoes should prove advantageous in such areas
LiftUpp: Support to Develop Learner Performance
Various motivations exist to move away from the simple assessment of
knowledge towards the more complex assessment and development of competence.
However, to accommodate such a change, high demands are put on the supporting
e-infrastructure in terms of intelligently collecting and analysing data. In
this paper, we discuss these challenges and how they are being addressed by
LiftUpp, a system that is now used in 70% of UK dental schools, and is finding
wider applications in physiotherapy, medicine and veterinary science. We
describe how data is collected for workplace-based development in dentistry
using a dedicated iPad app, which enables an integrated approach to linking and
assessing work flows, skills and learning outcomes. Furthermore, we detail how
the various forms of collected data can be fused, visualized and integrated
with conventional forms of assessment. This enables curriculum integration,
improved real-time student feedback, support for administration, and informed
instructional planning. Together these facets contribute to better support for
the development of learners' competence in situated learning setting, as well
as an improved experience. Finally, we discuss several directions for future
research on intelligent teaching systems that are afforded by using the design

Genetic Economy in Picornaviruses: Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Replication Exploits Alternative Precursor Cleavage Pathways
The RNA genomes of picornaviruses are translated into single polyproteins which are subsequently cleaved into structural and non-structural protein products. For genetic economy, proteins and processing intermediates have evolved to perform distinct functions. The picornavirus precursor protein, P3, is cleaved to produce membrane-associated 3A, primer peptide 3B, protease 3Cpro and polymerase 3Dpol. Uniquely, foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) encodes three similar copies of 3B (3B1-3), thus providing a convenient natural system to explore the role(s) of 3B in the processing cascade. Using a replicon system, we confirmed by genetic deletion or functional inactivation that each copy of 3B appears to function independently to prime FMDV RNA replication. However, we also show that deletion of 3B3 prevents replication and that this could be reversed by introducing mutations at the C-terminus of 3B2 that restored the natural sequence at the 3B3-3C cleavage site. In vitro translation studies showed that precursors with 3B3 deleted were rapidly cleaved to produce 3CD but that no polymerase, 3Dpol, was detected. Complementation assays, using distinguishable replicons bearing different inactivating mutations, showed that replicons with mutations within 3Dpol could be recovered by 3Dpol derived from “helper” replicons (incorporating inactivation mutations in all three copies of 3B). However, complementation was not observed when the natural 3B-3C cleavage site was altered in the “helper” replicon, again suggesting that a processing abnormality at this position prevented the production of 3Dpol. When mutations affecting polyprotein processing were introduced into an infectious clone, viable viruses were recovered but these had acquired compensatory mutations in the 3B-3C cleavage site. These mutations were shown to restore the wild-type processing characteristics when analysed in an in vitro processing assay. Overall, this study demonstrates a dual functional role of the small primer peptide 3B3, further highlighting how picornaviruses increase genetic economy
Ownership-dependent mating tactics of minor males of the beetle Librodor japonicus (Nitidulidae) with intra-sexual dimorphism of mandibles
Intra-sexual dimorphism is found in the weapons of many male beetles. Different behavioral tactics to access females between major and minor males, which adopt fighting and alternative tactics, respectively, are thought to maintain the male dimorphism. In these species major males have enlarged weapons that they use in fights with rival males. Minor males also have small weapons in some of these species, and it is unclear why these males possess weapons. We examined the hypothesis that minor males might adopt a fighting tactic when their status was relatively high in comparison with that of other males (e.g., ownership of a territory). We observed the behavioral tactics of major and minor males of the beetle Librodor japonicus, whose males have a dimorphism of their mandibles. Major males fought for resources, whereas minor males adopted two status-dependent tactics, fighting and sneaking, to access females, depending on their ownership of a sap site. We suggest that ownership status-dependent mating tactics in minor males may maintain the intra-sexual dimorphism in this beetle.</p
Video enhancement using adaptive spatio-temporal connective filter and piecewise mapping
This paper presents a novel video enhancement system based on an adaptive spatio-temporal connective (ASTC) noise filter and an adaptive piecewise mapping function (APMF). For ill-exposed videos or those with much noise, we first introduce a novel local image statistic to identify impulse noise pixels, and then incorporate it into the classical bilateral filter to form ASTC, aiming to reduce the mixture of the most two common types of noises - Gaussian and impulse noises in spatial and temporal directions. After noise removal, we enhance the video contrast with APMF based on the statistical information of frame segmentation results. The experiment results demonstrate that, for diverse low-quality videos corrupted by mixed noise, underexposure, overexposure, or any mixture of the above, the proposed system can automatically produce satisfactory results
