    Experimental determination of the thermal properties of multi-layered surfaces

In this specific case, thermal conductivity and diffusivity were the parameters of interest. Towards this end, an experimental apparatus was constructed which applied a thermal load to various materials and observed their thermal responses. Bugs in the experimental apparatus were compensated for by way of a MATLAB script, until the data produced by individual tests became highly repeatable. Software was developed which simulated these thermal responses for given thermal loads and "true" parameter values. The materials were put through multiple tests (Laser Flash Test, Transient Plane Source) to independently identify possible values for these thermal properties. The "true" values were then chosen from these possible values based on how well they allowed the simulated response to fit the measured response. It was found that implementation of the CRB and GEIM allowed for an accurate estimate of these "true values," and did so without exhaustively carrying out a finite element analysis for every possible combination of parameters, creating an exponential increase in performance.by Jacob Bailey.S.B

    Evaluating Interaction Techniques in an Interactive Workspace: Comparing the Effectiveness of a Textual Interface, Virtual Paths Interface, and ARIS

    ARIS is an interface that enables users to visually relocate applications and redirect input among myriad devices in an interactive workspace. While we previously claimed that ARIS is more effective than other interfaces for performing these tasks, this work seeks to empirically validate our claim. We compared the use of ARIS to an interaction design of a text-based and virtual paths interface for relocating applications and redirecting input in an interactive workspace. Results show that (i) users can relocate applications and redirect input faster with ARIS than a text-based interface, (ii) users commit fewer errors with ARIS than a text-based interface, (iii) users experience less workload and are more satisfied with ARIS than a text-based interface, and (iv) ARIS was comparable to the use of a virtual paths interface. ARIS is more effective than an interaction design that requires a user to mentally map and select textual identifiers, while supporting functionality beyond that of a virtual paths interface

    A Lean, Fast Mars Round-trip Mission Architecture: Using Current Technologies for a Human Mission in the 2030s

    We present a lean fast-transfer architecture concept for a first human mission to Mars that utilizes current technologies and two pivotal parameters: an end-to-end Mars mission duration of approximately one year, and a deep space habitat of approximately 50 metric tons. These parameters were formulated by a 2012 deep space habitat study conducted at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) that focused on a subset of recognized high- engineering-risk factors that may otherwise limit space travel to destinations such as Mars or near-Earth asteroid (NEA)s. With these constraints, we model and promote Mars mission opportunities in the 2030s enabled by a combination of on-orbit staging, mission element pre-positioning, and unique round-trip trajectories identified by state-of-the-art astrodynamics algorithms

    Mineralogical and geochemical characterisation of warm water, shallow marine glaucony from the Tertiary of the London Basin

    Glaucony is present in the Palaeocene sediments of the London Basin, from the Thanet Sand Formation to the gravel beds at the base of the Lower Mottled Beds of the Reading Formation. The Upnor Formation glaucony is a rare example of formation in warm, shallow brackish water and this, combined with the ready availability of fresh material from boreholes, make this study important in developing our understanding of this mineral. Glaucony comprises up to 50% of the Upnor Formation, a grey to green sandstone, of variable thickness and composition, that was deposited in a warm, shallow marine to estuarine environment, ~55.6-56.2 Ma. Using morphological criteria, X-ray diffraction data and K+ abundance, the Upnor glaucony may be defined as evolved. The underlying shallow marine Thanet Sand contains <5% of nascent to slightly evolved glaucony. The REE data for the Upnor Formation suggest more than one source for the sediment from which the Upnor glaucony formed, while the Thanet REE data are consistent with a high detrital clay component. In the Upnor Formation, the high proportion of glaucony that occurs as granule fragments rather than whole granules, and the high energy estuarine to shallow marine environment of deposition, are indicative of reworking. The Upnor glaucony is inferred to be intraformationally reworked, rather than derived from the Thanet Sand Formation. The glaucony may have formed in sediments deposited away from the main estuarine channel, and been subsequently reworked into higher energy sediments. Warm seas with freshwater mixing are more typically characteristic of verdine formation than of glaucony. The shallow, brackish environment of deposition suggests that there is not a clear distinction between the environmental requirements of verdine (or odinite) and glaucony (or glauconite), as is often proposed. The highly fractured, delicate nature of some granules indicates that they have experienced some maturation in situ, after reworking. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of Upnor Formation shark teeth and glaucony point to formation in low salinity water at ~23±3°C, also consistent with formation in the Upnor Formation, rather than in a fully marine sediment and subsequent reworking. A higher than normal temperature of formation may have increased the rate of evolution of glaucony. Our multidisciplinary study considers many of the factors relating to depositional environment that must be considered when glaucony rich facies are encountered in comparable palaeoenvironmental settings elsewhere in the geological record

    Competition of Mesoscales and Crossover to Tricriticality in Polymer Solutions

    We show that the approach to asymptotic fluctuation-induced critical behavior in polymer solutions is governed by a competition between a correlation length diverging at the critical point and an additional mesoscopic length-scale, the radius of gyration. Accurate light-scattering experiments on polystyrene solutions in cyclohexane with polymer molecular weights ranging from 200,000 up to 11.4 million clearly demonstrate a crossover between two universal regimes: a regime with Ising asymptotic critical behavior, where the correlation length prevails, and a regime with tricritical theta-point behavior determined by a mesoscopic polymer-chain length.Comment: 4 pages in RevTeX with 4 figure

    Automated data processing architecture for the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey

    The Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey (GPIES) is a multi-year direct imaging survey of 600 stars to discover and characterize young Jovian exoplanets and their environments. We have developed an automated data architecture to process and index all data related to the survey uniformly. An automated and flexible data processing framework, which we term the Data Cruncher, combines multiple data reduction pipelines together to process all spectroscopic, polarimetric, and calibration data taken with GPIES. With no human intervention, fully reduced and calibrated data products are available less than an hour after the data are taken to expedite follow-up on potential objects of interest. The Data Cruncher can run on a supercomputer to reprocess all GPIES data in a single day as improvements are made to our data reduction pipelines. A backend MySQL database indexes all files, which are synced to the cloud, and a front-end web server allows for easy browsing of all files associated with GPIES. To help observers, quicklook displays show reduced data as they are processed in real-time, and chatbots on Slack post observing information as well as reduced data products. Together, the GPIES automated data processing architecture reduces our workload, provides real-time data reduction, optimizes our observing strategy, and maintains a homogeneously reduced dataset to study planet occurrence and instrument performance.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, accepted in JATI
