A multi-photon Stokes-parameter invariant for entangled states
We consider the Minkowskian norm of the n-photon Stokes tensor, a scalar
invariant under the group realized by the transformations of stochastic local
quantum operations and classical communications (SLOCC). This invariant is
offered as a candidate entanglement measure for n-qubit states and discussed in
relation to measures of quantum state entanglement for certain important
classes of two-qubit and three-qubit systems. This invariant can be directly
estimated via a quantum network, obviating the need to perform laborious
quantum state tomography. We also show that this invariant directly captures
the extent of entanglement purification due to SLOCC filters.Comment: 9 pages, 0 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review
Entanglement, Mixedness, and Spin-Flip Symmetry in Multiple-Qubit Systems
A relationship between a recently introduced multipartite entanglement
measure, state mixedness, and spin-flip symmetry is established for any finite
number of qubits. It is also shown that, within those classes of states
invariant under the spin-flip transformation, there is a complementarity
relation between multipartite entanglement and mixedness. A number of example
classes of multiple-qubit systems are studied in light of this relationship.Comment: To appear in Physical Review A; submitted 14 May 200

Large phenotype jumps in biomolecular evolution
By defining the phenotype of a biopolymer by its active three-dimensional
shape, and its genotype by its primary sequence, we propose a model that
predicts and characterizes the statistical distribution of a population of
biopolymers with a specific phenotype, that originated from a given genotypic
sequence by a single mutational event. Depending on the ratio g0 that
characterizes the spread of potential energies of the mutated population with
respect to temperature, three different statistical regimes have been
identified. We suggest that biopolymers found in nature are in a critical
regime with g0 in the range 1-6, corresponding to a broad, but not too broad,
phenotypic distribution resembling a truncated Levy flight. Thus the biopolymer
phenotype can be considerably modified in just a few mutations. The proposed
model is in good agreement with the experimental distribution of activities
determined for a population of single mutants of a group I ribozyme.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. E; 7 pages, 6 figures; longer discussion in

Clustering and Non-Gaussian Behavior in Granular Matter
We investigate the properties of a model of granular matter consisting of
Brownian particles on a line subject to inelastic mutual collisions. This model
displays a genuine thermodynamic limit for the mean values of the energy and
the energy dissipation. When the typical relaxation time associated with
the Brownian process is small compared with the mean collision time
the spatial density is nearly homogeneous and the velocity probability
distribution is gaussian. In the opposite limit one has
strong spatial clustering, with a fractal distribution of particles, and the
velocity probability distribution strongly deviates from the gaussian one.Comment: 4 pages including 3 eps figures, LaTex, added references, corrected

Size Segregation of Granular Matter in Silo Discharges
We present an experimental study of segregation of granular matter in a
quasi-two dimensional silo emptying out of an orifice. Size separation is
observed when multi-sized particles are used with the larger particles found in
the center of the silo in the region of fastest flow. We use imaging to study
the flow inside the silo and quantitatively measure the concentration profiles
of bi-disperse beads as a function of position and time. The angle of the
surface is given by the angle of repose of the particles, and the flow occurs
in a few layers only near the top of this inclined surface. The flowing region
becomes deeper near the center of the silo and is confined to a parabolic
region centered at the orifice which is approximately described by the
kinematic model. The experimental evidence suggests that the segregation occurs
on the surface and not in the flow deep inside the silo where velocity
gradients also are present. We report the time development of the
concentrations of the bi-disperse particles as a function of size ratios, flow
rate, and the ratio of initial mixture. The qualitative aspects of the observed
phenomena may be explained by a void filling model of segregation.Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures (gif format), postscript version at

Driven low density granular mixtures
We study the steady state properties of a 2D granular mixture in the presence
of energy driving by employing simple analytical estimates and Direct
Simulation Monte Carlo. We adopt two different driving mechanisms: a) a
homogeneous heat bath with friction and b) a vibrating boundary (thermal or
harmonic) in the presence of gravity. The main findings are: the appearance of
two different granular temperatures, one for each species; the existence of
overpopulated tails in the velocity distribution functions and of non trivial
spatial correlations indicating the spontaneous formation of cluster
aggregates. In the case of a fluid subject to gravity and to a vibrating
boundary, both densities and temperatures display non uniform profiles along
the direction normal to the wall, in particular the temperature profiles are
different for the two species while the temperature ratio is almost constant
with the height. Finally, we obtained the velocity distributions at different
heights and verified the non gaussianity of the resulting distributions.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, submitted for publicatio
Purifying and Reversible Physical Processes
Starting from the observation that reversible processes cannot increase the
purity of any input state, we study deterministic physical processes, which map
a set of states to a set of pure states. Such a process must map any state to
the same pure output, if purity is demanded for the input set of all states.
But otherwise, when the input set is restricted, it is possible to find
non-trivial purifying processes. For the most restricted case of only two input
states, we completely characterize the output of any such map. We furthermore
consider maps, which combine the property of purity and reversibility on a set
of states, and we derive necessary and sufficient conditions on sets, which
permit such processes.Comment: 5 pages, no figures, v2: only minimal change
Dynamics of vibrofluidized granular gases in periodic structures
The behavior of a driven granular gas in a container consisting of
connected compartments is studied employing a microscopic kinetic model. After
obtaining the governing equations for the occupation numbers and the granular
temperatures of each compartment we consider the various dynamical regimes. The
system displays interesting analogies with the ordering processes of phase
separating mixtures quenched below the their critical point. In particular, we
show that below a certain value of the driving intensity the populations of the
various compartments become unequal and the system clusterizes. Such a
phenomenon is not instantaneous, but is characterized by a time scale, ,
which follows a Vogel-Vulcher exponential behavior. On the other hand, the
reverse phenomenon which involves the ``evaporation'' of a cluster due to the
driving force is also characterized by a second time scale which diverges at
the limit of stability of the cluster.Comment: 11 pages, 17 figure
Trapping of Projectiles in Fixed Scatterer Calculations
We study multiple scattering off nuclei in the closure approximation. Instead
of reducing the dynamics to one particle potential scattering, the scattering
amplitude for fixed target configurations is averaged over the target
groundstate density via stochastic integration. At low energies a strong
coupling limit is found which can not be obtained in a first order optical
potential approximation. As its physical explanation, we propose it to be
caused by trapping of the projectile. We analyse this phenomenon in mean field
and random potential approximations.
