    This research explores tool support for information retrieval and comparison of multiple pieces of information on the web. The study identifies the main goals users may have in mind when using the Internet in this way, and the necessary activities users complete to fulfill their goals. The main goals web users have are information search, entertainment and consumer to business transactions. The tasks users perform on the web to fulfill their goals include collecting, comparing, filtering and processing web information. These tasks form a decision-making cycle on the web and depending on the goal at hand, users may or may not necessarily undertake all the tasks or sub-steps in any sequential order. Industry web support tools have been analyzed to find out how effective they are in supporting a common user's activities. These tools include web browsers (Netcaptor Browser and Internet Explorer), editing tools (Notes Pilot and Edit Pad), plug-ins, research tools and window management systems. Both browsers are poor at arranging multiple windows and excellent at opening web sites. The Internet Explorer browser proved to be better than the Netcaptor browser at a number of activities including, selecting web content, copying web text and images and pasting web content into editing documents. When used with either browser. Microsoft Windows is good for arranging windows but poor in switching windows views, scrolling windows and resizing and re-positioning windows. Both editing tools are poor at re-positioning and formatting web content from an HTML environment to a text-based environment. The Notes Pilot tool is also poor in making calculations and returning to the browser. It is excellent at saving work and retrieving old files. The Edit Pad tool is successful at all other activities except re-positioning and formatting web content. It can be seen that tool support is lacking or current web-based tools support the user poorly in a number of areas. The need for an integrated web support tool has been identified. The functional and non-functional requirements have been specified, the tool designed, implemented and evaluated by users. The users were requested to complete a questionnaire and conduct a think-aloud walk-through session while completing three tasks using the integrated web support tool. The sessions were observed and results recorded. Most of the users strongly agreed with the proposition that the tool would be useful for personal or academic activities. The users recognized the tool's novelty, its efficiency, and also indicated an overall level of satisfaction. The users were less satisfied about referring back to web sites, getting the software to do exactly what they wanted and arranging the work space to meet their needs. Changes were made to the tool

    Efficacy of Continuous Passive Motion after Total Knee Arthroplasty in Veteran Patients

    Since the early 1980s, continuous passive motion has been used as adjunct therapy in patients’ rehabilitation following total knee arthroplasty. Although existing literature challenged the benefits of continuous passive motion claiming it had no added short-term or long-term benefits after knee arthroplasty (Boese et al., 2014; Chen et al., 2012; Herbold et al., 2014; Leach et al., 2006; Maniar et al., 2012), the existing literature is difficult to generalize and apply to the veteran population at San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. This study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of continuous passive motion in helping veteran patients at San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center achieve post-operative range of motion goals following total knee arthroplasty. Using a retrospective design an extensive chart review was conducted. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with time as a repeated measure independent variable, continuous passive motion as a between-subjects independent variable, and extension/flexion as dependent variables was conducted. For extension, time was statistically significant (p \u3c .001) but mean extension did not differ between continuous passive motion and no continuous passive motion (p = .976). Similarly, for flexion, time was statistically significant (p \u3c .001) but mean flexion did not differ between continuous passive motion and no continuous passive motion (p = .128). Therefore, this research is consistent with current literature, which claims that continuous passive motion does not have short-term benefits, particularly in the area of range of motion

    Comparing Learning Platform Impact on Low Vision Education for Occupational Therapists

    This pilot study examines the impact of face-to-face, remote, and hybrid learning platforms on satisfaction, confidence, and knowledge-application of occupational therapy practitioners during a synchronous low vision continuing education program. Fifteen participants were divided into three groups, each corresponding to one learning platform. They engaged in two 45-min learning sessions and completed pre, post, and follow-up surveys to measure the impact of the learning platform on the dependent variables of satisfaction, confidence, and knowledge application. No significant differences were found between learning platforms for the three variables, but improvements from pre to follow-up survey were found to be significant for confidence and knowledge application for all groups. These findings indicate that similar education provided to occupational therapy practitioners may result in improved confidence and knowledge application to clinical practice from the beginning to the end of the educational program, despite the learning platform. Flexibility with online learning options increased participation and adherence rates. Synchronous remote and hybrid learning platforms may be as effective as traditional face-to-face methods, specifically with increasing practitioner confidence and knowledge application. Remote options may reduce peer interactions but increase flexibility and convenience with scheduling for program scalability and accessibility

    Mentors' attitudes, beliefs and implementation of evidence based practice when mentoring student nurses in the community: a qualitative study

    Background: Nursing practice based on evidence improves patient care. Mentors supporting student nurses are in clinical placements are in a unique position to demonstrate evidence based practice (EBP). The NMC (2008) suggest mentors must be able to identify and apply research and EBP, increase or review the evidence-base used to support practice and support student nurses in applying an evidence base to their own practice. However, there is limited literature on nurse mentor’s attitudes, beliefs and implementation of EBP when mentoring student nurses in the community. Methods Data were collected via 7 focus groups in 2015 with 33 community nurse mentors from one NHS Foundation Trust. Community settings of the mentors included: community hospital inpatients and outpatients, minor injury units, and district nurse teams including specialist teams such as long term conditions, tissue viability, respiratory and cardiac rehabilitation. The interview schedule was based on information from a pilot group and previous literature. Data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Results Emergent super-ordinate themes from community nurse mentors included: 1) implementation of EBP 2) community nursing versus acute hospital nursing 3) implications of degree entry nursing 4) bidirectional learning 5) being part of the students’ journey a role model 6) EBP versus practice based evidence 7) barriers: IT, time, student attitudes, agency staff, mentorship course, paperwork 8) facilitators: IT, time, student attitudes, resources. Discussion All nurse mentors believed their clinical practice to be informed from evidence, specifically the structure provided from guidelines and policies both nationally and locally. Reviewing guidelines occurred in job descriptions of more senior roles. Mentors invested time and energy in supporting students to implement EBP as recognised the importance of educating the next generation of nurses. Issues regarding the mentorship course arose including; accessibility, length of the course and content

    Community- and hospital-based nurses' implementation of evidence-based practice: are there any differences?

    The aim of this paper is to discuss the impact of nurses’ beliefs, knowledge and skills on the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) in hospital and community settings. EBP refers to the implementation of the most up-to-date robust research into clinical practice. Barriers have been well-documented and traditionally include negative beliefs of nurses as well as a lack of time, knowledge and skills. However, with degree entry nursing and a focus on community health care provision, what has changed? A comprehensive search of contemporary literature (2010-2015) was completed. The findings of this review show that the traditionally acknowledged barriers of a lack of time, knowledge and skills remained, however, nurses’ beliefs towards EBP however were more positive, but positive beliefs did not affect the intentions to implement EBP or knowledge and skills of EBP. Nurses in hospital and community settings reported similar barriers and facilitators

    Animacy and Alienability: A Reconsideration of English Possession

    Current scholarship on English possessive constructions, the s-genitive and the of-construction, largely ignores the possessive relationships inherent in certain English compound nouns. Scholars agree that, in general, an animate possessor predicts the s-genitive while an inanimate possessor predicts the of-construction. However, the current literature rarely discusses noun compounds, such as the table leg, which also express possessive relationships. However, pragmatically and syntactically, a compound cannot be considered as a true possessive construction. Thus, this paper will examine why some compounds still display possessive semantics epiphenomenally. The noun compounds that imply possession seem to exhibit relationships prototypical of inalienable possession such as body part, part whole, and spatial relationships. Additionally, the juxtaposition of the possessor and possessum in the compound construction is reminiscent of inalienable possession in other languages. Therefore, this paper proposes that inalienability, a phenomenon not thought to be relevant in English, actually imbues noun compounds whose components exhibit an inalienable relationship with possessive semantics

    The Electrochemical Detection of Interleukin-8, Cancer Biomarker, Based on a Gold Nanoparticle Platform and its Political Implications

    Herein we report on an ultrasensitive immunosensor based on glutathione protected gold nanoparticle (GSH-AuNP) for the electrochemical detection of interleukin 8 (IL-8), cancer biomarker in calf serum and proof of concept IL-8 detection in HNSCC cells. GSH-AuNP were bioconjugated to the primary antibodies (Ab1) and used to capture human IL-8 in a sandwich electrochemical immunoassay coupled to horseradish peroxidase enzyme labels. Using the optimized concentrations of the primary (Ab1) and secondary antibodies (Ab2), two sensor approaches were used to measure ultra low (≤ 500 fg mL-1) and elevated levels of IL-8. Biotinylated Ab2 bound to streptavidin HRP with 14-16 labels per antigen was used to measure high IL-8 concentration with a DL of 10 pg mL-1 (1.0 pM) in 10 L calf serum. The second approach greatly amplified the signal using 1 m magnetic beads coated with over 500,000 HRP labels providing the highest sensitivity of (1061.8 nA mL (fg IL-8)-1 cm-2 and the best detection limit of 1 fg mL-1 (100 aM) for IL-8 in 10 L calf serum. This represents a 10,000-fold and 30,000-fold decrease in the DL over the Ab-HRP(14-16) system and the industry standard ELISA for IL-8 respectively. The immuonsensors were also used to accurately measure IL-8 in HNSCC cell lines with excellent correlation to the standard enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). These GSH-AuNP based immuonsensors show great promise for the fabrication of ultrasensitive biosensor microarrays for point-of-care cancer diagnosis
