Uses of anthologyIn a review of a book Wielcy artyści ucieczek. Antologia tekstów o „Życiu i czasach Michaela K.” w trzydziestą rocznicę publikacji, an author analyses the mere idea of an anthology of interpretations, describing its two possible understandings: as a collection of incomparable perspectives and as a field of conflict. The author emphasizes difficulties of interpretational procedures related to the novel by J.M. Coetzee and points to a political meanings of an act of reading. Additionally, texts collected in the anthology are classified by different attitudes towards the work of meanings in the novel, and some reductional practices are criticized. Finally, the author places the anthology in a wider horizon of interpretational strategies in contemporary humanities, asking questions regarding their importance – or lack of it

Maciej JakubowiakJagiellonian University, Faculty of Polish, Department of Anthropology of Literature and Cultural StudiesCultural Studies on Copyright LawThe goal of the article is to present and analyze the key problems of cultural studies on copyright law – a relatively new area of literary and cultural research, developed mostly in the United States since 1980s. The main objective of thus oriented research is to introduce an alternative perspective to studies traditionally carried out by copyright lawyers – a perspective allowing one to recognize the complexity of ways in which legal solutions may impact cultural practice. The article chronologically discusses the most important publications representing this subdiscipline, including text by such authors as Martha Woodmansee, Mark Rose, Paul K. Saint-Amour and Caren Irr. The critical presentation of the material focuses on ways of defining relations between copyright law and literature, on the impact of analyses carried out within this model upon our understanding of the cultural phenomena under discussion, and – last but not least – on research methods within the area. Additionally, the argument presented in the article serves the purpose of deriving a more general formula of thinking about literature from the existing research and of confronting it with other modes of reflection about the relations obtaining between various disciplines of academic research. Keywords: cultural studies on copyright law, copyright, authorship, impact of legal solutions upon cultural practiceKulturowe studia nad prawem autorskimArtykuł poświęcony jest prezentacji i analizie najważniejszych problemów formułowanych w ramach kulturowych studiów nad prawem autorskim – nurcie badań literaturo- i kulturoznawczych rozwijających się głównie w Stanach Zjednoczonych od lat 80. XX wieku. Marthy Woodmansee, Marka Rose’a, Paula K. Saint-Amoura i Caren Irr. Krytyczna prezentacja materiału bierze pod uwagę takie kwestie, jak: sposoby definiowania relacji między prawem autorskim a literaturą; efekty prowadzonych analiz dla rozumienia omawianych fenomenów kulturowych; projektowane metody badawcze. Dodatkowym celem artykułu jest próba wypreparowania z przedstawianych badań ogólniejszej formuły myślenia o literaturze i skonfrontowanie jej z innymi sposobami myślenia o relacjach między dyscyplinami naukowymi.Słowa kluczowe: kulturowe studia nad prawem autorskim, copyright, prawo autorskie, autorstwo, wpływ rozwiązań prawnych na praktykę kulturowąMaciej JakubowiakUniwersytet Jagielloński, Wydział Polonistyki, Katedra Antropologii Literatury i Badań KulturowychCultural Studies on Copyright LawThe goal of the article is to present and analyze the key problems of cultural studies on copyright law – a relatively new area of literary and cultural research, developed mostly in the United States since 1980s. Dangers of salvation This review of Sprawiedliwość na końcu języka. Czytanie Waltera Benjamina by Adam Lipszyc locates the book in the framework of a wider phenomenon of interest in Walter Benjamin’s writings in contemporary Polish humanities. Author of the review indicates the basic assumption of homogeneity of the Benjamin’s writings, involving continuous elaboration of the “justice act” formula. The resulting preference for theological perspective, which becomes axiological frame for the analysis contained in the book, is questionable to reviewer. Despite these methodological concerns, the review underlines the impressive character of the analyzes conducted by Lipszyc, including not only a detailed reconstruction of Benjamin’s thought, but also the broader context of the philosophy of the twentieth century. The most important idea for literary studies turns out to be a dialectical relationship between philosophy and literature (criticism, history, translatology), which is being introduced by Lipszyc following Benjamin’s work

Augmenting Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation to Improve Outcomes in Myeloma

    Get PDF
Consolidation with high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is the standard of care for transplantation-eligible patients with multiple myeloma, based on randomized trials showing improved progression-free survival with autologous transplantation after combination chemotherapy induction. These trials were performed before novel agents were introduced; subsequently, combinations of immunomodulatory drugs and proteasome inhibitors as induction therapy have significantly improved rates and depth of response. Ongoing randomized trials are testing whether conventional autologous transplantation continues to improve responses after novel agent induction. Although these results are awaited, it is important to review strategies for improving outcomes after ASCT. Conditioning before ASCT with higher doses of melphalan and combinations of melphalan with other agents, including radiopharmaceuticals, has been explored. Tandem ASCT, consolidation, and maintenance therapy after ASCT have been investigated in phase III trials. Experimental cellular therapies using ex vivo–primed dendritic cells, ex vivo–expanded autologous lymphocytes, Killer Immunoglobulin Receptor (KIR)-mismatched allogeneic natural killer cells, and genetically modified T cells to augment ASCT are also in phase I trials. This review summarizes these strategies and highlights the importance of exploring strategies to augment ASCT, even in the era of novel agent induction

Proteomics: Challenges, Techniques and Possibilities to Overcome Biological Sample Complexity

    Get PDF
Proteomics is the large-scale study of the structure and function of proteins in complex biological sample. Such an approach has the potential value to understand the complex nature of the organism. Current proteomic tools allow large-scale, high-throughput analyses for the detection, identification, and functional investigation of proteome. Advances in protein fractionation and labeling techniques have improved protein identification to include the least abundant proteins. In addition, proteomics has been complemented by the analysis of posttranslational modifications and techniques for the quantitative comparison of different proteomes. However, the major limitation of proteomic investigations remains the complexity of biological structures and physiological processes, rendering the path of exploration paved with various difficulties and pitfalls. The quantity of data that is acquired with new techniques places new challenges on data processing and analysis. This article provides a brief overview of currently available proteomic techniques and their applications, followed by detailed description of advantages and technical challenges. Some solutions to circumvent technical difficulties are proposed
