Rotations and Abundances of Blue Horizontal-Branch Stars in Globular Cluster M15
High-resolution optical spectra of eighteen blue horizontal-branch (BHB)
stars in the globular cluster M15 indicate that their stellar rotation rates
and photospheric compositions vary strongly as a function of effective
temperature. Among the cooler stars in the sample, at Teff ~ 8500 K, metal
abundances are in rough agreement with the canonical cluster metallicity, and
the v sin i rotations appear to have a bimodal distribution, with eight stars
at v sin i < 15 km/s and two stars at v sin i ~ 35 km/s. Most of the stars at
Teff > 10000 K, however, are slowly rotating, v sin i < 7 km/s, and their iron
and titanium are enhanced by a factor of 300 to solar abundance levels.
Magnesium maintains a nearly constant abundance over the entire range of Teff,
and helium is depleted by factors of 10 to 30 in three of the hotter stars.
Diffusion effects in the stellar atmospheres are the most likely explanation
for these large differences in composition. Our results are qualitatively very
similar to those previously reported for M13 and NGC 6752, but with even larger
enhancement amplitudes, presumably due to the increased efficiency of radiative
levitation at lower intrinsic [Fe/H]. We also see evidence for faster stellar
rotation explicitly preventing the onset of the diffusion mechanisms among a

Striking Photospheric Abundance Anomalies in Blue Horizontal-Branch Stars in Globular Cluster M13
High-resolution optical spectra of thirteen blue horizontal-branch (BHB)
stars in the globular cluster M13 show enormous deviations in element
abundances from the expected cluster metallicity. In the hotter stars (T_eff >
12000 K), helium is depleted by factors of 10 to 100 below solar, while iron is
enhanced to three times the solar abundance, two orders of magnitude above the
canonical metallicity [Fe/H] ~= -1.5 dex for this globular cluster. Nitrogen,
phosphorus, and chromium exhibit even more pronounced enhancements, and other
metals are also mildly overabundant, with the exception of magnesium, which
stays very near the expected cluster metallicity. These photospheric anomalies
are most likely due to diffusion --- gravitational settling of helium, and
radiative levitation of the other elements --- in the stable radiative
atmospheres of these hot stars. The effects of these mechanisms may have some
impact on the photometric morphology of the cluster's horizontal branch and on

The Sloan Bright Arcs Survey : Six Strongly Lensed Galaxies at z=0.4-1.4
We present new results of our program to systematically search for strongly
lensed galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging data. In this
study six strong lens systems are presented which we have confirmed with
follow-up spectroscopy and imaging using the 3.5m telescope at the Apache Point
Observatory. Preliminary mass models indicate that the lenses are group-scale
systems with velocity dispersions ranging from 466-878 km s^{-1} at z=0.17-0.45
which are strongly lensing source galaxies at z=0.4-1.4. Galaxy groups are a
relatively new mass scale just beginning to be probed with strong lensing. Our
sample of lenses roughly doubles the confirmed number of group-scale lenses in
the SDSS and complements ongoing strong lens searches in other imaging surveys
such as the CFHTLS (Cabanac et al 2007). As our arcs were discovered in the
SDSS imaging data they are all bright (), making them ideally

Photometric Response Functions of the SDSS Imager
The monochromatic illumination system is constructed to carry out in situ
measurements of the response function of the mosaicked CCD imager used in the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The system is outlined and the results of the
measurements, mostly during the first 6 years of the SDSS, are described. We
present the reference response functions for the five colour passbands derived
from these measurements, and discuss column to column variations and variations
in time, and also their effects on photometry. We also discuss the effect
arising from various, slightly different response functions of the associated
detector systems that were used to give SDSS photometry. We show that the
calibration procedures of SDSS remove these variations reasonably well with the
resulting final errors from variant response functions being unlikely to be
larger than 0.01 mag for g, r, i, and z bands over the entire duration of the
survey. The considerable aging effect is uncovered in the u band, the response
function showing a 30% decrease in the throughput in the short wavelength side
during the survey years, which potentially causes a systematic error in
photometry. The aging effect is consistent with variation of the instrumental
sensitivity in u-band, which is calibrated out. The expected colour variation
is consistent with measured colour variation in the catalog of repeated
photometry. The colour variation is delta (u-g) ~ 0.01 for most stars, and at
most delta (u-g) ~ 0.02 mag for those with extreme colours. We verified in the
final catalogue that no systematic variations in excess of 0.01 mag are
detected in the photometry which can be ascribed to aging and/or seasonal
effects except for the secular u-g colour variation for stars with extreme

Extended Lyman-α emission in 3C 326.1 - A 100 kiloparsec cloud of ionized gas at a redshift of 1.82
We report the discovery of a large cloud of ionized gas associated with the high-redshift radio source 3C 326.1 New radio-frequency images made at 4.9 GHz and 15 GHz with the Very Large Array show the radio source to be a small double (~ 7") without a detectable core at the level of ~ 0.5 mJy. Long-slit spectrograms and Lγa imaging reveal a ~ 100 kpc diameter cloud of ionized gas with a redshift of 1.825 encompassing the radio source. Deep broad-band images show two faint (V = 23.5-24.5) blue objects located on the periphery of the cloud, as well as some very faint (V = 25-26) extremely blue diffuse objects roughly coincident with the brightest regions of the cloud. Long-slit CCD spectra suggest that the Lγa emission from the cloud has a large intrinsic width (FWHM ≈ 1000 km s^(-1)). Spectra taken in the red show weak extended emission from C II] and C III], but C IV emission has not been detected. The large equivalent width of Lγa and the relative strengths of the carbon lines are consistent with H n region-type photoionization. We tentatively propose that 3C 326.1 is a young and/or forming galaxy
Assessing Plasmodium falciparum transmission in mosquito-feeding assays using quantitative PCR.
BACKGROUND: Evaluating the efficacy of transmission-blocking interventions relies on mosquito-feeding assays, with transmission typically assessed by microscopic identification of oocysts in mosquito midguts; however, microscopy has limited throughput, sensitivity and specificity. Where low prevalence and intensity mosquito infections occur, as observed during controlled human malaria infection studies or natural transmission, a reliable method for detection and quantification of low-level midgut infection is required. Here, a semi-automated, Taqman quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay sufficiently sensitive to detect a single-oocyst midgut infection is described. RESULTS: Extraction of genomic DNA from Anopheles stephensi midguts using a semi-automated extraction process was shown to have equivalent extraction efficiency to manual DNA extraction. An 18S Plasmodium falciparum qPCR assay was adapted for quantitative detection of P. falciparum midgut oocyst infection using synthetic DNA standards. The assay was validated for sensitivity and specificity, and the limit of detection was 0.7 genomes/µL (95% CI 0.4-1.6 genomes/µL). All microscopy-confirmed oocyst infected midgut samples were detected by qPCR, including all single-oocyst positive midguts. The genome number per oocyst was assessed 8-9 days after feeding assay using both qPCR and droplet digital PCR and was 3722 (IQR: 2951-5453) and 3490 (IQR: 2720-4182), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This semi-automated qPCR method enables accurate detection of low-level P. falciparum oocyst infections in mosquito midguts, and may improve the sensitivity, specificity and throughput of assays used to evaluate candidate transmission-blocking interventions
Endemic invasive amoebiasis in northern Australia
In October 2000, a 10-year-old Aboriginal boy from the Darwin region of the Northern Territory was referred to hospital with a 24-hour history of abdominal pain, initially generalised, but then localising to the right iliac fossa. The pain was accompanied by occasional vomiting, but no fever or diarrhoea was noted. At laparotomy, a gangrenous, unruptured appendix was removed. Postoperatively, the patient made a good recovery. Neither he nor any family members had travelled outside the Northern Territory.Histological sections of the surgical specimen showed changes typical of acute suppurative appendicitis. Closer examination, however, revealed numerous round-to-oval structures resembling trophozoites (see Box). When the possibility of invasive amoebiasis was raised, staining of the section with Entamoeba histolytica-specific sera confirmed the diagnosis. E. histolytica serology was negative
