    Systems level circuit model of C. elegans undulatory locomotion: mathematical modeling and molecular genetics

    To establish the relationship between locomotory behavior and dynamics of neural circuits in the nematode C. elegans we combined molecular and theoretical approaches. In particular, we quantitatively analyzed the motion of C. elegans with defective synaptic GABA and acetylcholine transmission, defective muscle calcium signaling, and defective muscles and cuticle structures, and compared the data with our systems level circuit model. The major experimental findings are: (i) anterior-to-posterior gradients of body bending flex for almost all strains both for forward and backward motion, and for neuronal mutants, also analogous weak gradients of undulatory frequency, (ii) existence of some form of neuromuscular (stretch receptor) feedback, (iii) invariance of neuromuscular wavelength, (iv) biphasic dependence of frequency on synaptic signaling, and (v) decrease of frequency with increase of the muscle time constant. Based on (i) we hypothesize that the Central Pattern Generator (CPG) is located in the head both for forward and backward motion. Points (i) and (ii) are the starting assumptions for our theoretical model, whose dynamical patterns are qualitatively insensitive to the details of the CPG design if stretch receptor feedback is sufficiently strong and slow. The model reveals that stretch receptor coupling in the body wall is critical for generation of the neuromuscular wave. Our model agrees with our behavioral data(iii), (iv), and (v), and with other pertinent published data, e.g., that frequency is an increasing function of muscle gap-junction coupling.Comment: Neural control of C. elegans motion with genetic perturbation

    The human microsomal epoxide hydrolase, a single enzyme, has to detoxify a broad range of structurally diverse, potentially genotoxic epoxides that are formed in the course of xenobiotic metabolism. The enzyme has developed a unique strategy to combine a broad substrate specificity with a high detoxification efficacy, by immediately trapping the reactive compounds as covalent intermediates and by being expressed at high levels for high trapping capacity. Computer simulation and experimental data as well as existing epidemiologic studies reveal this detoxification strategy as the mechanistic basis for a threshold in the tumorigenesis of mutagenic carcinogens

Positioning Gifted as part penance, part reparation, part justification for Evans’s literary criticism, this essay negotiates the dynamics of equivocal blend that characterise Evans’s “gifted” relationship with Frame and finds, within Gifted, an enactment of the continuum between paratext and adaptation. &nbsp

    Most colonial, Postcolonial, Post-postcolonial?: Irish Skulls and (K)iwi Bones

    This essay takes a comparative approach to the continuum between late 1990s debate regarding the representation of the Irish story in postcolonial terms and questions of contemporary Irish self-fashioning. Keri Hulme’s the bone people (1984) is employed as a framework for a series of encounters with Eílís Ní Dhuibhne’s The Dancers Dancing (1999), which highlight the latter as both a manifestation and interrogation of Irish postcoloniality. In so doing, these encounters act as a bi-focal lens, focalizing the concerns of the context of composition of Ní Dhuibhne’s text and also the challenges of the Irish context over a decade on. This essay engages with the palimpsestic layering that characterizes historical and cultural inheritance in late twentieth century and twenty-first century Ireland, attending to questions of materiality and the postcolonial, and the exegetical properties of the latter as a frame for the evolution of Irish experience

    On the Short Distance Part of the QCD Anomaly Contribution to the b --> s eta' Amplitude

    In addressing the B --> eta' K puzzle, there has been a considerable hope in the literature to resolve it by the QCD anomaly contribution to the b --> s eta' amplitude. This contribution corresponds to the electroweak b --> s g* g* transition followed by the off-shell gluon fusion g* g* --> eta'. In the present paper we perform a critical reassessment of this issue. We show that for the hard virtual gluons in a loop there is a well defined short distance amplitude corresponding to a remnant of the QCD anomaly. However, we find that it cannot account for the measured amplitude. In addition, we point out that the reduction of the gluon fusion vertex for the off-shell gluons is compensated by an absence of the claimed suppression in the electroweak vertex, and that some nonperturbative contributions related to the QCD anomaly may still be viable in explaining the physical B --> eta' K amplitude.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX + elsart.cls, to appear in Phys.     Using environmental monitoring to complement in-depth qualitative interviews in cold homes research

    Cold homes contribute to twenty to forty thousand excess winter deaths each year in the UK and approximately 300,000 hospital admissions. Using fuel poverty as an identifier for those at risk does not always capture everyday exposure to cold homes due to variations in financial trade-offs and behavioural factors. Few fuel poverty studies have combined environmental measurements with qualitative data on lived experiences of fuel poverty and cold homes. This paper looks at the strengths and limitations of using a mixed method, environmental and qualitative interviewing approach. A series of six discreet studies were conducted between 2001 and 2015 using a similar methodology with a mixed methods design where in-depth interviews were conducted alongside temperature and humidity measurements. The research studies found that combining environmental monitoring with qualitative research methods allows both cross validation and triangulation of data in order to provide a richer and more insightful examination into the lives of people living in cold homes. The studies demonstrate how a combined methodological approach can help explain the choices, decisions and behaviour of households experiencing cold homes and fuel poverty. The paper concludes with recommendations for future development and implementation of the research method

    Using present-day observations to detect when anthropogenic change forces surface ocean carbonate chemistry outside preindustrial bounds

This study addresses this need through a global synthesis of monthly pH and aragonite saturation state (Ωarag) climatologies for 12 open ocean, coastal, and coral reef locations using 3-hourly moored observations of surface seawater partial pressure of CO2 and pH collected together since as early as 2010. Mooring observations suggest open ocean subtropical and subarctic sites experience present-day surface pH and Ωarag conditions outside the bounds of preindustrial variability throughout most, if not all, of the year. In general, coastal mooring sites experience more natural variability and thus, more overlap with preindustrial conditions; however, present-day Ωarag conditions surpass biologically relevant thresholds associated with ocean acidification impacts on Mytilus californianus (Ωarag < 1.8) and Crassostrea gigas (Ωarag < 2.0) larvae in the California Current Ecosystem (CCE) and Mya arenaria larvae in the Gulf of Maine (Ωarag < 1.6). At the most variable mooring locations in coastal systems of the CCE, subseasonal conditions approached Ωarag =  1. Global and regional models and data syntheses of ship-based observations tended to underestimate seasonal variability compared to mooring observations. Efforts such as this to characterize all patterns of pH and Ωarag variability and change at key locations are fundamental to assessing present-day biological impacts of ocean acidification, further improving experimental design to interrogate organism response under real-world conditions, and improving predictive models and vulnerability assessments seeking to quantify the broader impacts of ocean acidification.The CO2 and ocean acidification observations were funded by NOAA’s Climate Observation Division (COD) in the Climate Program Office and NOAA’s Ocean Acidification Program.     An updated analysis of eps'/eps in the standard model with hadronic matrix elements from the chiral quark model

    We discuss the theoretical and experimental status of the CP violating ratio eps'/eps. We revise our 1997 standard-model estimate-based on hadronic matrix elements computed in the chiral quark model up to O(p^4) in the chiral expansion-by including an improved statistical analysis of the uncertainties and updated determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa elements and other short-distance parameters. Using normal distributions for the experimental input data we find Re eps'/eps = (2.2 \pm 0.8) x 10^{-3}, whereas a flat scanning gives 0.9 x 10^{-3} < Re eps'/eps < 4.8 x 10^{-3}. Both results are in agreement with the current experimental data. The key element in our estimate is, as before, the fit of the Delta I=1/2 rule, which allows us to absorb most of the theoretical uncertainties in the determination of the model-dependent parameters in the hadronic matrix elements. Our semi-phenomenological approach leads to numerical stability against variations of the renormalization scale and scheme dependence of the short- and long-distance components. The same dynamical mechanism at work in the selection rule also explains the larger value obtained for \ratio with respect to other estimates.
