Becoming a Seer: Thoughts on Deleuze, Mindfulness and Feminism

This essay circles around two ideas. First, I try to answer the ethical question “What is the right thing to do?” through the application of the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s affirmative philosophy. Second, I relate Deleuze’s philosophy to mindfulness. I do not wish to suggest that they are identical. They are not. Yet, mixing mindfulness with Deleuze leads to a philosophy of mindfulness. That is a philosophy that makes us less blind to our experiences, but also ethically responsible for what actually happens. Hereby, I move mindfulness from the sphere of psychology into philosophy, or from being primarily a practice of turning inward to one of turning outward, but also make Deleuze’s ethic more operational. The latter I will – briefly – illustrate by touching on elements of feminism

Compassion - Toward an Ethics of Mindfulness

This work is guided by two hypotheses with one overall objective of establishing an ethics of mindfulness . The first hypothesis is the concept of moral motivator or in- tentional moral. Both Western philosophy and mindfulness operate with an intention influenced by their moral beliefs. The second hypothesis is the relationship between moral reasoning and wisdom. That is, our reasoning is affected by our moral belief . To combine those two theses, I introduce the concept compassion from mindfulness and the ethics based on the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. Hereby, I suggest that by practicing mindfulness, one can develop his or her capacity for compassion, but also – this practice – is a «way of life» that can help protect the planet: an ethical practice

    Towards an Immanent Business Ethics?

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to explore the possibilities for an immanent ethics for business. The paper has three parts. In the first part, I make some general and critical comments about the nature of business ethics. In the second part, I outline the immanent ethics as presented by the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. Then, I positioning immanent ethics within business, primarily in relation to the terms "best practice" and "best fit." The main claim here is that an immanent ethics encourages a shift from a merely reactive approach toward an active. This shift opens up the field for an affirmative practice that aims at enlarging the discussion within business ethics as such

Spatial planning stipulations concerning retail management have to pursue spatial planning objectives through specification of the pertinent fundamental principles as laid down in § 2 Para. 2 of the German Spatial Planning Act. The mandate provided in the German constitution must be given due regard. The spatial planning requirements served by the stipulations can, as supra-local interests of greater weight, justify restrictions in municipal planning jurisdiction. The principle of proportionality and the prohibition of arbitrary decisions must be observed in the process. According to § 3 Para. 1 Nr. 2 of the German Spatial Planning Act, spatial planning aims for retail management require binding guidelines in the form of stipulations in spatial planning plans that are spatially and technically specified or possible to specify and that are finally carefully weighed up by those responsible for spatial planning. In addition they must satisfy the formal requirements of spatial planning stipulations - involvement of public authorities and the public in planning procedures, environmental assessment with environmental report, and the giving of proper notice. Of particular importance is also a sufficient plan rationale

    Eckpunkte einer möglichen landesplanerischen Steuerung

Die vorgeschlagenen Eckpunkte empfehlen, alle Einzelhandelsgroßprojekte i. S. d. S. d. § 11 Abs 3 BauNVO.The suggested key points recommend that state planning management include all largescale retail projects in accordance with § 11 Para. 3 of the German Land Use Ordinance and agglomerations of non large-scale retail projects acting as shopping centres. Most important thereby is the preservation and further development of central retail areas, as resources that require protection. An additional focus is the provision of retail facilities close to consumers, insofar as this is not ensured by the central retail areas. When drawing up the stipulations a distinction should be made between local, towncentre and non town-centre retail offerings. The designation of core and special zones for the development of large-scale retail projects with retail offerings appropriate for town-centres is only to be made in central retail areas. An exception from this integration precept is - under strict conditions - provided for large-scale retail projects with primarily local retail offerings. A further exception is made for large-scale retail facilities where the retail offerings are primarily of non town-centre character, if the facilities lie in general residential areas and if limits are put on the extent of their town-centre retail offerings. The excessive concentration of large furniture and furnishing store developments in few locations is to be prevented as this endangers or indeed destroys facilities close to consumers. Large-scale retail projects may not have damaging effects on central retail areas (impairment prohibition). Agglomerations that damage central areas have to be subject to the same stipulations and to prevention by appropriate land-use planning as large-scale retail projects in accordance with § 11 Abs 3 of the German Land Use Ordinance

Presence Of A Congenitally Bicuspid Aortic Valve Among Patients Having Combined Mitral And Aortic Valve Replacement

    Get PDF
Although bicuspid aortic valve occurs in an estimated 1% of adults and mitral valve prolapse in an estimated 5% of adults, occurrence of the 2 in the same patient is infrequent. During examination of operatively excised aortic and mitral valves because of dysfunction (stenosis and/or regurgitation), we encountered 16 patients who had congenitally bicuspid aortic valves associated with various types of dysfunctioning mitral valves. Eleven of the 16 patients had aortic stenosis (AS): 5 of them also had mitral stenosis, of rheumatic origin in 4 and secondary to mitral annular calcium in 1; the other 6 with aortic stenosis had pure mitral regurgitation (MR) secondary to mitral valve prolapse in 3, to ischemia in 2, and to unclear origin in 1. Of the 5 patients with pure aortic regurgitation, each also had pure mitral regurgitation: in 1 secondary to mitral valve prolapse and in 4 secondary to infective endocarditis. In conclusion, various types of mitral dysfunction severe enough to warrant mitral valve replacement occur in patients with bicuspid aortic valves. A proper search for mitral valve dysfunction in patients with bicuspid aortic valves appears warranted. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. (Am J Cardiol 2012;109:263-271)Integrative Biolog

    Doing Business with Deleuze?

    Get PDF
This essay has two parts. The first part gives a brief overview of the foundations of economics. The second part contains a broader outline of the way in which philosopher Gilles Deleuze thinks of ethics. In the second part, I also explore the potential connections between Deleuze's thoughts and economics. Especially, I focus on the concepts of "human capital," "empowerment," and more fruitful, the concept of "power-with" as proposed by organizational theorist, Mary Parker Follett. By doing so, I try to minimize the gap between economics and ethics as presented here. Finally, I determine whether it is possible to do business with Deleuze
