Political divisiveness continues to make news and influence our lives. In Spain, the drive for Catalonia’s independence has sparked demonstrations from both sides, including police action to close polling places. In Britain, Brexit aroused a debate marked by strong emotion over the future direction of the country. In the U.S., movements such as Black Lives Matter/Blue Lives Matter, standing for the national anthem, and even monologues from late night comedians engender strong emotions. Polling data in the U.S suggest that major political parties are further apart on basic political values than ever before. We suggest that the strength and ubiquitous nature of political convictions will likely spill over to workplace decision-making

Inhibition of adenovirus serotype 14 infection by octadecyloxyethyl esters of (S)-[(3-hydroxy-2-phosphonomethoxy)propyl]- nucleosides in vitro.
On September 22, 2008, a physician on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, notified the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (ADHSS) of an unusually high number of adult patients with recently diagnosed pneumonia (n = 10), including three persons who required hospitalization and one who died. ADHSS and CDC conducted an investigation to determine the cause and distribution of the outbreak, identify risk factors for hospitalization, and implement control measures. This report summarizes the results of that investigation, which found that the outbreak was caused by adenovirus 14 (Ad14), an emerging adenovirus serotype in the United States that is associated with a higher rate of severe illness compared with other adenoviruses. Among the 46 cases identified in the outbreak from September 1 through October 27, 2008, the most frequently observed characteristics included the following: male (70%), Alaska Native (61%), underlying pulmonary disease (44%), aged > or = 65 years (26%), and current smoker (48%). Patients aged > or = 65 years had a fivefold increased risk for hospitalization. The most commonly reported symptoms were cough (100%), shortness of breath (87%), and fever (74%). Of the 11 hospitalized patients, three required intensive care, and one required mechanical ventilation. One death was reported. Ad14 isolates obtained during the outbreak were identical genetically to those in recent community-acquired outbreaks in the United States which suggests the emergence of a new, and possibly more virulent Ad14 variant. Clinicians should consider Ad14 infection in the differential diagnosis for patients with community-acquired pneumonia, particularly when unexplained clusters of severe respiratory infections are detected
Fiber Optic Rosette Strain Gauge Development and Application on a Large-Scale Composite Structure
A detailed description of the construction, application, and measurement of 196 FO rosette strain gauges that measured multi-axis strain across the outside upper surface of the forward bulkhead component of a multibay composite fuselage test article is presented. A background of the FO strain gauge and the FO measurement system as utilized in this application is given and results for the higher load cases of the testing sequence are shown
Criticality for the Gehring link problem
In 1974, Gehring posed the problem of minimizing the length of two linked
curves separated by unit distance. This constraint can be viewed as a measure
of thickness for links, and the ratio of length over thickness as the
ropelength. In this paper we refine Gehring's problem to deal with links in a
fixed link-homotopy class: we prove ropelength minimizers exist and introduce a
theory of ropelength criticality.
Our balance criterion is a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for
criticality, based on a strengthened, infinite-dimensional version of the
Kuhn--Tucker theorem. We use this to prove that every critical link is C^1 with
finite total curvature. The balance criterion also allows us to explicitly
describe critical configurations (and presumed minimizers) for many links
including the Borromean rings. We also exhibit a surprising critical
configuration for two clasped ropes: near their tips the curvature is unbounded
and a small gap appears between the two components. These examples reveal the

The anxiolytic effects of cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia: preliminary results from a web-delivered protocol
Though the efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia (CBTI) is well-established, the paucity of credentialed providers hinders widespread access. Further, the impact of alternatives such as web-delivered CBTI has not been adequately tested on common insomnia comorbidities such as anxiety. Therefore, we assessed the impact of an empirically validated web-delivered CBTI intervention on insomnia and comorbid anxiety symptoms. A sample of 22 adults (49.8±13.5 yo; 62.5% female) with DSM-5 based insomnia were randomized to either an active CBTI treatment group (n = 13) or an information-control (IC) group (n = 9). Participants in the CBTI group underwent a standard CBTI program delivered online by a 'virtual' therapist, whereas the IC group received weekly 'sleep tips' and general sleep hygiene education via electronic mail. All participants self-reported sleep parameters, including sleep onset latency (SOL), insomnia symptoms per the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and anxiety symptoms per the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) at both baseline as well as follow- up assessment one week post-treatment. There were no significant differences between the CBTI and IC groups on baseline measures. The CBTI group showed significantly larger reductions in BAI scores (t = 2.6; p < .05; Cohen's d = .8) and ISI scores (t = 2.1; p < .05; Cohen's d = .9) at follow-up than did the IC group. Further, changes in SOL from baseline (62.3±44.0 minutes) to follow-up (22.3±14.4 minutes) in the CBTI group were also significantly greater (t = 2.3; p < .05; Cohen's d = .9) than in the IC group (baseline: 55.0±44.2 minutes; follow-up: 50.±60.2 minutes).This study offers preliminary evidence that a web-delivered CBTI protocol with minimal patient contact can improve comorbid anxiety symptoms among individuals with insomnia
Order by disorder and spiral spin liquid in frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnets
Frustration refers to competition between different interactions that cannot
be simultaneously satisfied, a familiar feature in many magnetic solids. Strong
frustration results in highly degenerate ground states, and a large suppression
of ordering by fluctuations. Key challenges in frustrated magnetism are
characterizing the fluctuating spin-liquid regime and determining the mechanism
of eventual order at lower temperature. Here, we study a model of a diamond
lattice antiferromagnet appropriate for numerous spinel materials. With
sufficiently strong frustration a massive ground state degeneracy develops
amongst spirals whose propagation wavevectors reside on a continuous
two-dimensional ``spiral surface'' in momentum space. We argue that an
important ordering mechanism is entropic splitting of the degenerate ground
states, an elusive phenomena called order-by-disorder. A broad ``spiral
spin-liquid'' regime emerges at higher temperatures, where the underlying
spiral surface can be directly revealed via spin correlations. We discuss the
agreement between these predictions and the well characterized spinel MnSc2S4
