Cors

The Gift and the meaning-giving subject: A Reading of Given Time
In this essay the relation between justice and the gift in Derrida’s thinking is explored. The essay shows that an understanding of the ontological difference or the relation between Being and beings in Heidegger’s thinking as well as Freud’s speculations on the death drive are essential to comprehend the ‘concept’ or ‘notion’ of différance as well as the gift in Derrida’s thinking. The analysis points to the complexity of Derrida’s thinking in his contemplation of the relation between justice and law and the need for a broader investigation to understand what is at stake in this regard. An exploration of the gift shows that Derrida’s thinking on justice is not ‘relativistic’ as is often assumed and that the gift can in a certain way function as a ‘guide’ in questions of constitutional interpretation
Homogenenized interface model describing defects periodically distributed on a surface
Titre du résumé français joint : Modèle d'interface homogénéisée décrivant des défauts périodiquement répartis sur une surfaceNational audienceWe undertake the homogenization of a three-dimensional elastic medium, which contains heterogeneities localized on a surface. These can be either reinforcements, like steel reinforcements in concrete, or defects, like microcracks periodically distributed. We propose a simple model describing the effective behaviour of these heterogeneities. This model, formulated in an energetic framework, com- bines an elastic interface behaviour with that of a membrane. Its interest is discussed through several applications.See http://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/docs/00/59/28/84/ANNEX/r_O1H9ABAW.pd
Corse, Mali, Dahomey, Cameroun, Guadeloup
Sartre's Postcartesian Ontology: On Negation and Existence
This article maintains that Jean-Paul Sartre’s early masterwork, Being and
Nothingness, is primarily concerned with developing an original approach to
the being of consciousness. Sartre’s ontology resituates the Cartesian cogito
in a complete system that provides a new understanding of negation and a
dynamic interpretation of human existence. The article examines the role of
consciousness, temporality and the relationship between self and others in the
light of Sartre’s arguments against “classical” rationalism. The conclusion suggests
that Sartre’s departure from modern foundationalism has “postmodern”
implications that emerge in the areas of ontology, existential analytics and the
ethics of human freedom
Atomic-scale grain boundary engineering to overcome hot-cracking in additively-manufactured superalloys
There are still debates regarding the mechanisms that lead to hot cracking in
parts build by additive manufacturing (AM) of non-weldable Ni-based
superalloys. This lack of in-depth understanding of the root causes of hot
cracking is an impediment to designing engineering parts for safety-critical
applications. Here, we deploy a near-atomic-scale approach to investigate the
details of the compositional decoration of grain boundaries in the
coarse-grained, columnar microstructure in parts built from a non-weldable
Ni-based superalloy by selective electron-beam melting. The progressive
enrichment in Cr, Mo and B at grain boundaries over the course of the
AM-typical successive solidification and remelting events, accompanied by
solid-state diffusion, causes grain boundary segregation induced liquation.
This observation is consistent with thermodynamic calculations. We demonstrate
that by adjusting build parameters to obtain a fine-grained equiaxed or a
columnar microstructure with grain width smaller than 100 m enables to
avoid cracking, despite strong grain boundary segregation. We find that the
spread of critical solutes to a higher total interfacial area, combined with
lower thermal stresses, helps to suppress interfacial liquation.Comment: Accepted version at Acta Materiali
Vulnerability of CMOS image sensors in megajoule class laser harsh environment
CMOS image sensors (CIS) are promising candidates as part of optical imagers for the plasma diagnostics devoted to the study of fusion by inertial confinement. However, the harsh radiative environment of Megajoule Class Lasers threatens the performances of these optical sensors. In this paper, the vulnerability of CIS to the transient and mixed pulsed radiation environment associated with such facilities is investigated during an experiment at the OMEGA facility at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), Rochester, NY, USA. The transient and permanent effects of the 14 MeV neutron pulse on CIS are presented. The behavior of the tested CIS shows that active pixel sensors (APS) exhibit a better hardness to this harsh environment than a CCD. A first order extrapolation of the reported results to the higher level of radiation expected for Megajoule Class Laser facilities (Laser Megajoule in France or National Ignition Facility in the USA) shows that temporarily saturated pixels due to transient neutron-induced single event effects will be the major issue for the development of radiation-tolerant plasma diagnostic instruments whereas the permanent degradation of the CIS related to displacement damage or total ionizing dose effects could be reduced by applying well known mitigation techniques
